Boro,
When the Cheering Stops,
Wilf Mannion
James Corbett, a sportswriter for, amongst others, the Observer Sport Monthly and FourFourTwo, and author of two books – England Expects and Everton: The School of Science needs your help!
‘When the Cheering Stops’ is about past footballing heroes and how they were forgotten or shunned by the game they had given so much to. As well as chapters on Dixie Dean, Tommy Lawton, Bill Shankly, Hughie Gallagher, Don Revie and Bobby Moore (Amongst others…), I am writing about a former Boro’ star – perhaps the greatest of them all – Wilf Mannion.
We need you to help out!
James is currently looking for Boro fans (or even club staff or players) who met Wilf, maybe knew him, maybe saw him play or even worked with him at ICI to interview. Indeed I’m particularly keen to hear from people who encountered him in retirement (bear in mind sometimes the most chance or obscure meetings can be the most interesting or revelatory).
Everyone interviewed will be acknowledged in the book and I’ll make sure they receive a copy too (publication is likely to be late –2009).
If you could email james [at ] whenthecheeringstops [dot] co [dot] uk – that would be very helpful.
Thanks for your help

Middlesbrough’s first pre season frienly is against York City. The game is on Friday the 18th July at the KitKat Cresent.
It still seems uncertain what squad Gareth Southgate is going to take, but hopefully Marvin Emnes and Didier Digard will feature.
Carson Set To Move To Boro -

Scott Carson
Scott Carson has been rumoured to be the next signing for Middlesbrough FC. Gareth Southgate has stated that he will not bring in a keeper and allow Brad Jones and Ross Turnbull to fight it out for the number one shirt.
However, ’sources who wouldn’t lie’ have stated that Carson will sign for Boro.
Carson’s name joins the long list of players rumoured to be moving to Middlesbrough, and to be honest, I dont see Carson joining us!
Friday Frenzy! A look into Boro’s signings -

Middlesbrough FC
So Boro have spashed out over £7 million in 24 hours. Not bad for a days work!
Gareth Southgate, in these 2 signings has changed a static midfield into one with flair, creativity, the ability to pass and tackle! Marvin Emnes, signed for around £3 million scored 8 times in his last 10 appearances, including a screamer from 30 yards out. He has the ability to take on a player with an end product. With Downing and Emnes on the right and left side of midfield, Boro fans can look forward to some exciting attacking football.
Didier ‘the new Viera’ Digard is rated highly in France and has played at every international level upto U21.
He is able to get stuck in and tackle, with the likes of Deco and Ronaldo this is essential. He is likely to replace George Boateng who is reported to be moving to Hull in search of first team football.
Is this all we will see in transfer market though? I doubt it. Boro have been strongly reported to be signing another midfielder, reports suggest James Harper is on the verge of agreeing personal terms however Boro have also been linked with Michael Bradley and a whole host of others.
