Should Garry Monk give youth a chance in the Carabao Cup?

Boro welcome Scunthorpe to The Riverside for the first time since 2011. Kris Boyd and Tony McMahon scored the goals that day in a comprehensive 2-0 Boro win.

Should Garry Monk give youth a chance in the Carabao Cup?

That day 11 of the match day squad came from the academy and have long since moved on. So in the Cup that has been so good to Middlesbrough over the years why not give youth a chance.

Sure Garry Monk will make changes. Likely starts for all of the subs for the last couple of games. Baker, Fletcher, Dimi, Leadbitter, Fabio, Roberts and Traore will all be looking to make a claim for a starting berth at home to Preston on Saturday before the international break. How far will he go. It all depends on how he treats the competition. What were the instructions from Steve Gibson at the start of the season. Does The Chairman want a cup run along with promotion.

The last couple of seasons have seen some great trips for Boro fans. Who will forget the Anfield penalty shoot out or Old Trafford and yes this was great, the bragging rights for a day at least euphoric but I for one would rather see some young lads get game time and experience in a first team game incase they are needed for the only true task this season. Promotion.

We do not have a big squad this season. A couple of injures in key areas and we are in trouble. Ben Gibson has played with a recovering broken nose the last couple of weeks, if this was aggravated we do not have a covering centre back on the bench. So why not play Mahmutovic.

Yes we have an array of attacking talent but Marcus Tavernier scored a first half hat trick this week. Mikael Soisalo did not look out of place on the pre season tour. In fact was one of the shining lights.

We have all seen it before, youth and exuberance put fear into defenders especially something they have never seen.

So this is my plea to Garry Monk. Give youth a chance!

As for the game itself, don’t forget Scunthorpe only just lost out to Millwall in the Playoffs last season but haven’t started the season in great form, hard to beat but struggling to win.

Prediction 3 - 1 in an entertaining game with Fletcher, Fry and Leadbitter the goal scorers.
