We spoke to Scunthorpe United blog Iron Bru ahead of the game about their start to the season and what to expect on Tuesday night.
“We started the season with five at the back and one up front, which has never really worked for us. Our first game against Wimbledon was a really poor display, particularly at home and following that and the first half of the Cup game with Notts County, Alexander accepted that this formation was not for us. To his credit he did so fairly quickly instead of trying to stick with it and it seems to have done the trick.”
“We registered our first win Oxford this weekend and it was a much improved performance. We are yet to hit the levels we saw last season, but there were certainly glimpses on Saturday that we are probably not too far away. The fans still think we are a couple of players short - especially a midfielder and a striker and if we get those on board as soon as possible, we will be in a good position.”
“The summer has been frustrating as we missed out on Crooks and Toney who went to Northampton and Wigan respectively. They did really well for us last year and it would have been nice to see them back. That said, we have signed Matt Gilks who is proving to be a really good goalkeeper and the talented Funso Ojo who looks to be a cracking find. We’ve got a week or so to find the missing pieces to the jigsaw and if we do, I think we’ll be there abouts again.”
When asked about Scunthorpe’s expectations for Tuesday night’s game, Iron Bru said “it obviously depends on what side Boro choose to play, but hopefully we will come and have a go.”
“We’ve got nothing to lose so hopefully some of our flair players such as Holmes, Morris and Adelekun can get some game time and impress. Whilst our main priority is the league and achieving promotion, a cup run is always nice and it would be a really good result if we can get through.”
“Funso Ojo in the middle of the park is a class act and a level above League One. I’m looking forward to seeing how he gets on against Championship class players on Tuesday. He always seems to have time on the ball, is really composed and can also pick a pass. You can tell he has played at a high level (Dutch Premier League) and looks to be a cracking find on a free transfer. If he carries on the way he has started, I can’t see it being long before bigger clubs are sniffing around for him.”
“Hakeeb Adelekun has started the season well and is a really tricky winger whilst Josh Morris, who scored loads of goals last year found the net on Saturday. If he can recapture the form he showed in the first half of last season, he is one of our most dangerous players.”
Predicted Line Up and Formation
Gilks, Townsend, Wallace, McArdle, Sutton, Adelekun, Bishop, Ojo, Morris, Hopper, Madden
"If we can keep it tight at the back, we might just be OK. I actually fancy us to get a result. Heart says 2-1 Scunthorpe! Head says you might have too much."
