Boro at risk of losing defender on a free transfer

Boro could lose defender Daniel Ayala this summer, according to latest reports from the local media.

The Hartlepool Mail claims that Daniel Ayala will have to take a pay-cut to remain at Boro, amid interest from promotion chasing Leeds United.

Ayala is one of the highest paid players at the club and Boro are looking to cut expenses as part of a summer restructuring.

Ayala's contract ends in the summer is believed to be a summer transfer window target for Leeds United, who are keen on signing the defender.

Leeds United are expected to be able to offer him better wages than what Boro can offer, and the prospect of potentially playing in the Premier League next season could prove too much for the defender to resist.

The Spaniard is a fans favourite and Boro will be disappointed to see the defender leave on a free transfer.

With the likes of Ayala, Dael Fry and Ryan Shotton all linked with a move away from Boro in the summer, the club will be looking for reinforcements in defensive positions.

Sheffield Wednesday's Morgan Fox has been linked with a move to Boro. The 26-year-old is out of contract in the summer and Boro will be looking to secure his services as a free agent.

Boro will be hoping that Ayala's last act at the club will be to help the club avoid relegation when the season resumes, with the club just two points above the drop zone.
