Gary O'Neil scored his first Boro goal and record signing Afonso Alves netted Middlesbrough FC's 6000th League goal.

Boro faced a free scoring Manchester City at the Riverside Stadium for the Wednesday evening fixture.

Afonso Alves scored his 3rd goal of the season, and Middlesbrough FC's 6000th league goal from the penalty spot after 53 minutes. David Wheater was brought down in the box by Sturridge and Afonso Alves took over penalty duty from Downing, who had missed 2 penalties this season.

Boro wrapped up 3 points in the 94th minute. Tuncay and O'Neil raced down the pitch, and Tuncay pulled the trigger however his shot was deflected into the path of Gary O'Neil who fired into the top of the net from 6 yards out.

Boro move up to 9th in the table and welcome 11th placed West Ham United to the Riverside on Saturday.
