Boro closely monitoring Alfie Doughty’s situation at Luton Town
Middlesbrough FC are keeping a close eye on Alfie Doughty at Luton Town, as manager Rob Edwards seeks to strengthen his squad.
Middlesbrough FC are closely monitoring Alfie Doughty’s situation at Luton Town, with manager Rob Edwards keen to reunite with the left wing-back. However, the club acknowledges that securing Doughty will be challenging, particularly given their pressing transfer needs.
Doughty had been a key player under Edwards during their time together at Luton, which has solidified his status as a target for Boro's recruitment team. Yet, any potential transfer will require navigating Luton’s hefty asking price, especially as Doughty recently signed a new contract that extends his commitment to the club. The situation has become more complex following Luton’s relegation to League One, but the Hatters are under no obligation to sell, thanks to the financial cushion provided by parachute payments.
While Middlesbrough intend to keep Doughty on their radar, their immediate focus is on strengthening the squad in several areas before making any concrete moves for the left wing-back position. Central defence is a primary concern, particularly after the departure of Anfernee Dijksteel. Current options include Luke Ayling, who struggled with injuries last season, and the relatively inexperienced Josh Dede, highlighting the need for a specialist right wing-back.
One potential target for this position, Kaine Kesler-Hayden, is reportedly close to finalising a move to Coventry City for around £4.5 million, prompting Boro to explore other alternatives. Strengthening the central defence and midfield remains crucial, regardless of the futures of Rav van den Berg and Hayden Hackney, both of whom have attracted interest from Crystal Palace.
The need for a centre-forward has become increasingly evident following the January departures of Emmanuel Latte Lath and Kelechi Iheanacho, whose loan spell proved unsuccessful. Additionally, Boro sanctioned the permanent transfer of Josh Coburn to Millwall for a fee exceeding £5 million, further underscoring their requirement for attacking reinforcements.
Boro's first pre-season friendly is scheduled for Wednesday, July 23, against League One side Bradford City.
