Boro complete the signing of former Chelsea midfielder

Middlesbrough FC have completed the signing of the ex-Premier League midfielder.

Former Chelsea midfielder and Nigerian International John Obi Mikel has completed his move to Middlesbrough FC, having agreed terms and completed a medical on Wednesday.

Mikel, who left Chinese Super League side Tianjin TEDA in 2017, is available on a free transfer though he hasn’t played competitive football since taking part in 2018 FIFA World Cup with Nigeria.

With his experience of playing in the Premier League, Tony Pulis would expect the former Chelsea midfielder to add steel to Boro’s midfield.

During his decade long stay at Chelsea between 2006 and 2017, Mikel made 249 appearances for them in all competitions, winning 2 Premier League and 1 Champions League titles in the process.

Mikel joins as Grant Leadbitter finalises his move back to Sunderland. The 33-year-old has featured over 200 times for Boro, however has fallen down the pecking order this season.
