Boro's Defensive Lift: Rav van den Berg Returns to Training, Engel Progresses

Middlesbrough are bolstered by the return of centre-back Rav van den Berg to training after a knee injury, alongside Danish left-back Lukas Engel's progress. Both players are crucial as the team prepares for upcoming fixtures.

Middlesbrough have been handed a boost as centre-back Rav van den Berg intensifies his training regimen following a lengthy absence due to a knee injury. While head coach Michael Carrick has yet to specify a precise timeline for van den Berg's return to competitive action, the defender's reintegration into full training sessions marks a significant step forward for the team.

Van den Berg has been on the sidelines since late October 2023, but he has now received medical clearance to rejoin his teammates at Rockliffe Park. His potential availability for the fixture against Leeds United this week has ignited optimism within the squad.

In another encouraging development, Danish left-back Lukas Engel has commenced training following his rehabilitation. Although Engel is unlikely to feature against Leeds United, his ongoing recovery suggests he may soon contest the starting left-back position with Neto Borges as Boro navigate the demanding festive schedule.

Carrick spoke positively about the squad following the Burnley match, stating, “All the players came through Friday well, so there's nothing to report there. Rav is back training with us, which is good. We’re assessing where he stands since he’s been out for several weeks now.” He further noted Engel's participation in training, albeit in a limited capacity, expressing satisfaction with the defender’s progress.

“The squad is massively important," Carrick remarked. "It can’t be underestimated. Sometimes, it’s difficult for the boys when they’re not playing as much as they would like." His comments reflect the need for players to remain ready for opportunities, drawing from his own experiences during his playing career.

He highlighted the significance of preparation and self-awareness: “Players know when the next game comes around, and if you’ve done the right things, you feel ready. But if you haven’t prepared well, deep down, you know you’re not quite ready.”

Carrick concluded with a nod to the collective effort of the team: “The boys have all kept their standards high, and there’s a really good distribution of the load being shared. It really does make a difference in the end.”

As Middlesbrough prepare for their crucial encounter with Leeds United, the anticipated returns of van den Berg and Engel could provide much-needed reinforcements.
