Hall calls for Gibson support

Former Newcastle United owner Sir John Hall has called upon Middlesbrough fans to show more support towards Chairman Steve Gibson.

Gibson – who is a Middlesbrough fan – has ploughed millions of pounds into the club since taking over in 1994 and has continued to back Tony Mowbray’s men despite relegation to the Championship two years ago.

Support for Gibson hasn’t been unanimous though and Middlesbrough – who were playing European football not so long ago – have been hit with financial problems in the last couple of seasons.

Sympathising with Gibson, Hall said: “When I see the support he doesn't get, he must wonder if it is worth carrying on. I feel sorry for Steve, he's done a hell of a job.”

“They got 13,000 fans the other week, that's not good enough. If you've got a team then you need to support them all the time.”

"The players need to see a full stadium to get an atmosphere and Steve needs to see that to get the financial help to keep the club going.”

"He must have put millions in, and I probably wouldn't have done what he did.”

Despite financial concerns, Middlesbrough are flying high in the Championship at the moment. They were held to a 2-2 draw against Blackpool at the weekend, but they are still fourth in the Championship and well in the mix when it comes to promotion.

There is a long way to go in the Championship campaign of course and anything can happen, but right now Middlesbrough have every reason to be positive about their chances of becoming a Premier League club once again.

Should they do this of course, their financial situation would take care of itself. Therefore, the remainder of this campaign is extremely important for the club’s future and the pressure is on.

Next up for Boro is a difficult trip to Peterborough followed by a home game against promotion rivals West Ham United. As things stand the Hammers are three points ahead of Boro in 2nd place, so it is bound to be a significant fixture with regards to the promotion race.

Mowbray and Gibson will just hope that everyone continues to rally together to help Middlesbrough finish in the automatic promotion places. Failing that, a play-off spot will suffice.

Promotion has to be the aim because another season in the Championship and things could be a lot less promising this time next year.

Middlesbrough fans may value staying in and playing texas hold em over going to support their team.

Hopefully, this doesn’t turn out to be the case. Everyone at the club should be positive and help Middlesbrough get back to where they belong.
