Middlesbrough Eye Ryan Giles Return from Hull City

Middlesbrough are reportedly interested in re-signing left-back Ryan Giles from Hull City, with initial discussions underway despite potential hurdles in the transfer process.

Middlesbrough are reportedly keen on re-signing Ryan Giles. Initial discussions have taken place, but significant hurdles remain before any potential transfer can be finalised this month, as reported by The Northern Echo.

Giles initially joined Hull City on loan before making a permanent switch for £4 million last summer. However, his performances have been inconsistent since his arrival, prompting Hull to contemplate a sale.

Boro manager, Michael Carrick, has maintained a strong interest in the player, who is believed to be eager to return to the Riverside Stadium. This desire is rooted in his regret over opting to join Luton Town last summer instead of securing a permanent deal with Middlesbrough, where he struggled to make a lasting impact.

For Hull City to facilitate Giles's departure, they may need to reassess their expectations regarding the transfer fee. Given his underwhelming performances, it appears unlikely they will recoup the full £4 million they invested to convert his loan into a permanent deal.

Giles was previously linked with a return to Middlesbrough during the summer transfer window, but an agreement could not be reached, leading Boro to explore alternatives and ultimately sign Neto Borges.

Reflecting on his previous transfer situation, Giles stated: "Listen, there were conversations, of course there were. I'm not going to shy away from it and lie about it, but I obviously only joined the club as a permanent in the summer, I know I was here in January but that was obviously as a loan. I had the conversations, it wasn't the case of me saying 'I want to leave', it wasn't that, we had a conversation and that was that. The club made it clear they wanted me to stay and I respected that."

Giles hasn't reached the same form he showed at Boro, where he produced 12 assists to help Boro into the playoffs.
