Middlesbrough set to complete the signing of Finn Azaz from Aston Villa

Finn Azaz is on the verge of signing for Middlesbrough FC on a permanent basis, following strong interest from Bristol City and Southampton for the 23-year-old.

With midfielder Finn Azaz on the verge of joining from Aston Villa, Middlesbrough FC look set to make an early breakthrough in the January transfer window. Having been on loan at Plymouth Argyle for the first half of the season and the entirety of last season, the 23-year-old's stay at the club will now be cut short as he prepares to move permanently to the Riverside.

According to The Northern Echo, Boro will beat both Bristol City and Southampton to his signature. Toulouse had also expressed interest in Azaz, but Boro may have won the race.

Having represented the Republic of Ireland at Under-21 level, Finn Azaz joined Aston Villa from West Brom in 2021. He later went on loan to Newport County and Plymouth. Despite missing a substantial portion of last season due to a broken ankle, Azaz played a crucial role in Argyle's promotion from League One, scoring eight goals in 24 starts.

This season, Azaz has continued to impress in the Championship for Plymouth, contributing seven goals and five assists. One of his goals came against Middlesbrough when the two sides drew 3-3 at Home Park.

As with last season when Boro signed Cameron Archer on loan from Aston Villa, Michael Carrick's team will now benefit from an early break through in the transfer window.

While the team faces injury problems, Carrick has stressed the importance of avoiding quick fixes and prioritising players who fit into the team's long-term vision.

Boro's promotion ambitions will be boosted by the versatile midfielder who has impressed on loan at Plymouth Argyle, fitting the mould of players Boro are looking to sign in the transfer window.
