Middlesbrough target set for Watford switch

Middlesbrough transfer target Ben Gibson is expected to join Watford on loan according to reports.

Gibson has been in the news since the beginning of the January transfer window and had been linked with a move back to Boro.

The 27-year-old defender has endured a miserable stint at Turf Moor making just one appearance this season in the Carabao Cup.

This is a far cry from the player that excelled at Boro, captaining the side to the Premier League in 2016.

Boro manager Jonathan Woodgate had been open regarding a potential loan deal, suggesting that the player was welcome in an interview last week. However, it appears that the financial aspect has affected the move.

Gibson's high wages are a struggle for Boro, however, Watford are willing to pay 80% of his current wages to secure a loan deal for the defender.

Both teams are already engaged in advanced talks with a move expected to happen before the transfer deadline on Friday.

Boro meanwhile have turned their sights to other targets. Leicester defender Filip Bencovic is reportedly in advanced talks with the club regarding a loan move.

The Croatia international would be a massive signing for Boro as they look to make a late push for the playoff spots.
