Woodgate reveals reason for dropping young trio in Barnsley defeat

Middlesbrough fell to a disappointing defeat to Barnsley on Saturday which saw them move closer to the relegation spots.

One decision that surprised many was the decision of manager Jonathan Woodgate to drop several of his young stars.

Djed Spence was absent from the matchday squad while Hayden Coulson and Marcus Tavernier started from the bench.

After the game, Woodgate was quizzed about his decision to bench the trio.

He explained that he felt the need to utilise experienced players as the club have become embroiled in a relegation battle.

“These are young lads and we are in a relegation battle, so sometimes you need people who have been there and done it and really fought.“

Woodgate also admonished Spence, claiming that the young right-back needs to put in more effort to his game.

“Listen, Djed’s been doing okay but he needs to do more, he needs to do more.”

Despite the inclusion of experience heads in defence including Jonny Howson, Ryan Shotton and George Friend Boro continued their wretched form in defence.

Boro are yet to keep a clean sheet since their 2-0 victory at Preston North End during the festive period.

Woodgate needs to find the right answer to stop the rot as pressure continues to increase at the club.
