He's now a small fish in a large pond with the amount of Billionaires in the Championship and the distorted price of keeping a Championship club afloat. He'll continue to back the managers as best he can and we know that we'll always have a football team as long as he's in charge. Would we be better with a super rich foreign owner in charge? Maybe, but attracting them to invest in a club situated in a run down area in the north east could be difficult. There's also no guarantee of success from extra investment, just look at the basket cases that some clubs have become: Forest, QPR, Birmingham, Hull, Sheff Wed.

I am of the school that says that those accusing of letting us down are ingrates and have short memories. Gibson has spent millions over the years giving us a team and we are a top end champo/bottom end prem type club because of him not despite him IMO. It all well and good quoting other teams but there are reasons foreign/rich owners bought them and I also look enviously at the fact we are beaten to players by the likes of Reading/QPR but I think our current model is spot on. After all who is actually queuing up to buy us? We should be careful what we wish for as there but for the grace of Gibbo we could be a Bolton/Sunderland/Pompey etc

EFL Cup Sponsored by Carabao First Round Middlesbrough vs Crewe Alexandra The Riverside Stadium Tuesday 13th August 2019, KO 19:45 It's the first round of the EFL Cup, a competition we won......ooh, ages ago, look! Pretty much since then we've lost to a lower league team in the first or second round or been beaten by a Premier League team in the Round of 16, apart from LAST SEASON when we went on an amazing run to the QUARTER FINALS where we were beaten by the mighty Burton Albion. Will history repeat itself? If so which version of history will we see? Could we go and win the whole thing? Steve Gibson probably hopes we go on a decent run again this season so he can do this: While the supporters do this: And the players do this: Stats vs Crewe Alexandra: We've only ever played Crewe once in the League Cup, where we won at Ayresome Park 3-1 back in 1961. *Not actual match footage. The view from the other side: Crewe Alexandra aren't talking about us yet, but when/if they do it'll be here. Talking points: Change the team? If so who comes in/goes out? Aim for a cup run or try to stay in the Championship? Do we trust a word that comes out of Steve Gibson's mouth? How terrible is my first ever matchday thread?

Could just make it a QR scanner and every ticket has a QR code. Shouldn't be a problem. My season ticket here in Denmark on my phone has a QR code and that's what I use. Mind you we have volounteers with handheld scanners instead of automatic turnstiles, but it should be the same.

Looking forward to tomorrow night, enjoying the transformation in our team in what is a very short time. Hopefully we will see the new signings get a full game.

I agree for the most part with this, what Steve Gibson has done for this football club can never be questioned, he's the reason we still have a football club. We have some fantastic years in the PL. There's no doubt Gibson has lost his way a bit and its not only down to the financial side of things but poor managerial decision making. it started with the season under Southgate which I still believe we've never totally recovered from. The last relegation season, Karanka goes and Agnew is put in charge, at least bring someone in with managerial experience in who may have given us a fighting chance. The appointment of Monk turned out to be a disaster then god forbid Tony the dinosaur Pulis. This is all down to Gibson and the incompetent yes men he has surrounded himself with he should have got rid of these clueless clowns. Should Gibson sell the club, I would hope not, because he's always had the interests of this football club at heart, both as a chairman and a supporter, you look at Blackburn, Sunderland and Bolton disastrous, so Gibbo is now having to cut the cloth accordingly that's how it is.

There are two phases of the Steve Gibson era - 1986 to 2006, and everything since. In the first era, he saved the club, put it on the map, moved us to the Riverside and invested in a squad worthy of Europe. Even today, he loves the club, and he's a far better chairman than those charlatans up the A19. That said, since 2006, as the man who writes the cheques, he's made one bad decision after another after another. In terms of managerial appointments alone, we've had the untested Southgate who took us down, Strachan, Agnew, Monk, Pulis... Anyone who grieved when Pulis left clearly has trouble understanding modern football, given the fact Pulis wasted our last parachute money on crap players in unnecessary positions while taking the biggest salary we'd ever paid a manager and completely aborting our promotion hopes against Villa. In his second era, Gibson has appointed people to senior positions at the club who don't seem to justify their salary, like Bevington. He's signed vanity players like Rhodes against the wishes of the managers of the time, got involved with politics to nobody's benefit, and now seems to have disappeared from view entirely. When did he last say anything to anyone in public? We're signing league one-standard players, whichever club they actually joined us from, yet Gibson apparently claims Pulis left us in a great position after all his mysterious "behind the scenes" work. Anyway, why would we need to fully balance the books to sell the club? Most clubs run at a loss, but the promise of PL cash is more than enough to attract investors. I tend to disregard rumours to the extent that Gibson pulled the plug on transfers last week, he's ready to sell, etc, but I invite anyone to tell me over the last ten years how his chairmanship of MFC can be considered a success, other than the fact we're not Bolton/Coventry/Bury. All footballing eras come to an end. However risky a new owner might be, I think Gibson began the process of separation some time ago. He'll be missed if/when he goes, but the time seems to be right.
  12. 1 point
No doubt there should be criticism, but it needs to be tempered with realism. Unfortunately, because of our location in the country, it costs more to attract decent players. This puts the club either at a financial disadvantage or footballing disadvantage (in terms of the ability of the players we can attract for the same outlay as other clubs). In the past the financial disadvantage was acceptable because it brought periods of success, something I imagine Gibson was hoping to achieve when he threw money at Monk's purchases in an attempt at a quick return to the Premiership (as Newcastle had recently achieved and as had worked in for the Boro previously). His failing has perhaps been not to notice that other clubs had been having success on smaller budgets by investing in talent from the lower leagues. It also seems that comparison with Burnley and others might be a little unfair because they all are somewhat nearer the cities of London Manchester and Liverpool. We are near Newcastle and Sunderland (in better times) and, from either a family-centric or leisure perspective we are not as attractive because of our past association with heavy industry, 'it's grim up North' etc. This will no doubt be something considered by investors also. Mike Ashley has a Premier League club that he can't get rid of. Also, as has been previously mentioned, for every successful team there are plenty of others whose fans think the grass will be greener and success assured by a change of owner or manager, only to be bitterly disappointed. The Brentford match shows how fickle fate is.

He's written off 8 figure losses over the years and those losses unlike other clubs have not been millstones around our necks and are not to any prospective takeover he 100% 'cares'. My take on the 'is he looking to sell' has always been the same the richest man in the world could put down 80 million for MFC+Rockliffe and Gibson wouldn't sell I hate to break the 'we are a northern *ithole' myth that gets thrown around but both Sheffield clubs are owned by rich Asians I think Barnsley might even have a rich owner? There'd be interest in Boro but it'd take the prospective owners moving into the region on a 20 year lease promises of taking care of the area I mean Gibson after what he's done isn't handing keys to the first rich bloke he sees. Gibson's problem seems to me he's very hands on with things he shouldn't be whether it's intervening in Agnew's tantrum with Aitor about feeling 'left out' or players coming to him with concerns about Aitor's methods and Spanish cliques. He can't sit back on transfers 30 odd years after saving us he's not got any kind of urge to sit back on anything yet alone sell us.

And yet there are people in the world willing to finance the likes of Bournemouth, Leicester, Watford etc. I think it's perhaps worth considering that one of the reasons it's a 'huge pit of burning cash' is because somebody sanctioned us spending more than we should have been.
  15. 1 point
Why should we be at this level? We've spent the majority of our history in the top 2 divisions, why shouldn't we aim to do what the likes of Burnley and Brighton are doing? Both are similar resourced clubs to us. We've gone from the Premier league to Championship also rans in a couple of years and the club seem to have convinced some people that things are being well run behind the scenes.

Yes that has been the case in the past for me.

There's no one else in the world that would be willing to finance the huge pit of burning cash known as Middlesbrough football club. Everyone wants to point the finger and say someone is to blame, when in reality we're at the level we should be. You've only got to look down the road at our neighbours Newcastle and Sunderland for much worse owners.

The tickets at the weekend were using a QR code I believe rather than a barcode like last year. So the scanners must be capable now just simply can't fit the phone in the slot... *Edit - Yep just checked the one I got for my Uncle and it was a QR Code.

Is it really not possible to use your smartphone and have your tickets scanned or do you have to print them? Do you get them delivered by carrier pigeons too?

Ok so it is early doors of the Cup competition but MFC and the fans need a win so I hope we will treat this game in a proper way, do not want to be dumped out by a lower league team once again. Get the job done no matter what

thought we were unlucky yesterday...on balance of play, deserved at least a draw, can't really express an opinion about first goal as too far away for my eyes....but strange that none of the goalmouth photographers seem to have a shot of the handball if it did occur....Fletch was onside for second goal but defence played to whistle.....thought Britt should have pulled ball back to unmarked player on edge of six-yard box instead of shooting when he hit post, but overall, encouraged and think that when things settle, we will be OK, not expecting great things, just entertainment and a better time than last year.....glad Teddy enjoyed himself, but now you can't threaten him with going again if he is naughty....roll on Tuesday

Probably get some pelters for this but I think Fletcher is our best finisher and should be given a chance at 9.

Well talk about a day that had so much mixed emotions for a 6 year old lad attending his first Boro game. Whilst his dad waited to pay for the tickets I took Teddy into the club shop coming out £72.00 poorer for the experience but talk about a kid in a sweet shop he would have been happy with half the shop I believe. Then we went to the fans bar and he got interviewed by BBC Tees along with both of us (don't know if anyone heard me plugging the forum) he got a Football Manager 2019 game presented by MFC and of course cock a hoop. Inside things got better in his eyes because Ryan Shotton spoke to him had his picture taken with him and got his autograph along with a few others to boot and high fived him saying "I won't let you down" actually he was really good with Teddy. Dael Fry told him he would be back in about 10 days. Then the game and he found out first hand just what it is like to be a Boro supporter he was really very cross at two seemingly good goals not being allowed but as I said to him maybe the third goal would be the lucky goal an so it proved to be for Brentfords benefit! I thought we were pretty good first half but then we lost all drive and determination to get back into the game once they had scored. Not as coherent as last week for certain but boy we had a lot of bad luck today. Outcome of the day...…………………….he wants to come back!

Right all, enough of the derailing in various ways. Things that have been posted/sent have been dealt with. Let's keep things on the game, respect opinions and not lower the tone or post potentially discriminatory things - no need on a football forum. Let's keep it civil and polite.

I think that is a very well put together, from the heart post, we all have opinions that may differs from others, but one thing we all have in common is our love for our football club

what did you want, we're up the creak without a paddle and it's a fire sale...... he bluffed and we got ok money for the players we shipped out. Not ethically sound but understandable in the circumstances.
