  1. Match-day Thread - Middlesbrough V's Charlton This is my 2nd match-day thread and I currently hold a 100% win record after we got a win against Reading. Let's hope for a bit more luck 😉. 2. It’s all a load of ***, our team is an experienced championship team, the majority of the players are the same players who finished 7th last season. Randolph is a top class keeper, Britt averages 15 a season, Ayala one of the most respected CB in the league, Howson is about as experienced as you can get. Also if they are going to use lack of experience as an excuse are they not going to counter that by pointing out Coulson has been one of the best performers this season?

  3. Morning Spurs fan. Quite pleased with the draw. A team we haven't played for a while and what i think of as a 'proper' side along with good away day. Mourihno will put out a stong team i think as he wants to get the 'no trophy' monkey off our backs early in his tunure. I will make the trip up there dependent on date & time as the trains are messed up and it is a 600 mile round trip for me in the car! We have a soft spot for Woodgate as he scored the winning goal for the only trophy we have won in 20 years. Anyway, good luck for the rest of the season & hope you sta

  9. It is strange that the forum's biggest trouble maker was sent to represent Oneboro at the most important meeting ever in the history of the world 🤨

  10. Ultimately, the issues we're facing come down to weak or inept coaching and tactics, plus an unwelcome hangover from Pulis's reign of error in terms of players having overly-defensive mindsets and low confidence.

  12. This is a really good read (in my opinion) on a club going all in on seeing the value in long term strategy, plus the use of analytics. It focuses on AZ Alkmaar, in the Dutch Eredivisie. https://soccerment.com/az-alkmaar-success-data-analytics/

  13. He can't retire. Every time he goes home and settles into his Shackleton Wingback chair with a copy of the Racing Post and a mug of cocoa, some pesky Football League manager sends a telegram asking for his help. Neil hasn't helped his wife put the bins out since 1975, and the last time he walked the family dog was three dogs ago.

  14. Just by way of comparison: Using average age of the squad minus those who have only played a handful of mins and average age of the 11 players who have played the most minutes (some of them might be slightly incorrect as I was rushed but it should only be very slightly). Boro - 25.9 and 26.5 WBA - 25.8 and 25.18 Leeds - 26.4 and 27.2 Fulham - 26 and 26.8 Forest - 26 and 27.8 Bristol City - 25.4 and 25.7 Preston - 26.2 and 26.5 We don't appear to have a particularly young squad compared to those clubs.

  15. 1) Match Result? A dour 0-0 draw, and last place on whatever Quest's crap coverage is called. Worst thing about being in the Championship for me - I really miss BBC's football league show. 2) Should Clayton be starting more games with our current injury crisis? Given the fact we'd be playing the tea lady if he didn't (how shocking is that injury list, BTW), we have to. 3) Was it a mistake to sell downing after he makes the Championship team of the Month? No. He never really performed for us when he came back, and he was a passenger in many games. His contribution was shocking for a

  16. Regarding Downing, last season had 2 goals and 1 assist for us. I'm comfortable not playing £35k per week for that kind of production. We didn't actually sell him though, his contract was up. This season he has done better in fairness to him with 1 goal and 4 assists although I think he's playing as a left back for Blackburn? He'll obviously be on much less money at Blackburn you'd think so there's obviously a reason beyond finances why we decided not to keep him on or he decided to leave. I thought he'd end up in a player coach role here but obviously it didn't pan out like that. It

  17. 19 games this season x 90 mins = 1710 mins Pears - 5 games 450 mins Coulson - 4 games 2 sub 363 mins = 813 mins out of 3420 mins or 24% of total possible game time They are the only two young, inexperienced players who have really been involved this season. Walker has had about 35 mins total so I haven't included him. Browne - 5 games 7 sub 410 mins Bola - 6 games 1 sub 519 mins Dijksteel - 9 games 3 sub 801 mins = 1730 mins out of 5130 mins or 34% of total possible game time. They are the new signings in the summer. None of them would be called experienced players

  18. It's probably because we can't afford young players that are actually getting gametime and we're left with older has-beens that can't get into the matchday squads in lower prem teams. It'll be more Cranies than Gastons.

  19. Just off the top of my head, you could pretty much put this team on the pitch at the moment. Randolph Djiksteel Ayala Fry Coulson Clayton McNair Saville Wing Britt Fletcher. That's with Friend, Shotton and Gestede to come back from injury. That to me is a nice blend of youth and experience which is what Woodgate supposedly wanted. I knew all those players aren't firing on all cylinders at the moment and that team also lacks flair, but that isn't a team that should be fighting relegation either.

The issue isn't playing out from the back, the issue is decision making on when, where and how.  If the opponents are closing, down, swarming and pressurising it can be effective by unlocking them and catching them up field however it is also far more likely to result in being bullied out of possession, putting us at risk or as we seen recently a poor ball to O'Brien leaving us stuffed. Having outlets making and creating space and time is crucial whether you play out from the back or go long. Simply hoofing it isn't the answer any more than playing a suicide ball to a player being rapidly closed down 20 yards out from our own goal. It's not the tactic that's at fault, it's the application and implementation of it which comes down to the skill, intelligence, awareness and ability of individuals. Chuba was great at holding the ball up and playing in team mates, we don't have that skill set this season and it's showed, having a Giles to be unleashed down the left hasn't been available this season, both were key to how we played last season. The loss of those outlets haven't helped us and those are just two examples. That said with the speed of Jones and ELL, playing it long can also be a serious threat to our opposition but neither tactic will work if players aren't looking up, alert and aware of their next pass/movement and to me that is the biggest difference between last season's passing it out from the back and this season. We passed out at speed and with cutting accuracy last season, this year we seem less confident, hesitant, slow and have created more problems for ourselves on many occasions because of it.  The massive summer upheaval in personnel hasn't helped and confidence and belief won't have helped with the start to the season that ensued. I'm sure many of the new signings were less than convinced as we set that record poor start statistic. Over time it's improved but nowhere close to our ability to pass out that we had last season, hence the frustrations and discussions.

I'd quite happily take a draw now, it keeps them down, keeps the unbeaten run going and keeps things very interesting in the promotion race.

What team would you pick? Dieng Dijksteel VDB Clarke Jones Howson O'Brien Engel Azaz ELL Silvera Based purely upon who has been fit enough to be starting or on the bench recently. With his contract situation I can't see Paddy being risked unless he is totally match ready plus the Player himself wouldn't want to risk injury, bit of a gamble for me. What's your favourite thing about Leeds? Car showrooms, I have bought quite a few Cars from dealers in and around Leeds. What are the odds on Bamford cheating yet again? I'd be disappointed if he did but with the stakes so high for Leeds I guess if he see's an opportunity he'll go down quicker than Pally F*nny. Will we derail their promotion push even further? I suspect another draw, Leeds have been spluttering so we could take them but without Ayling our supply line is severely restricted (never thought I'd be thinking let alone saying that when we signed him). Do we want them in the Championship next season is maybe another way to approach the game?

I totally forgot he returned to squad and then dropped out. Yeah in that case he on bench -at best.
