If we manage to get howson and Ayala down from a combined 50k to 16-20k that will be a massive difference. Pretty incredible as I would imagine they have the chance to get more elsewhere when their contracts expire. Extend those two alongside Spence and let the rest expire. Should set us up nicely for a clean slate in the summer.4 points

Where has this rumour come from that shots is on 30k a week? He isn't anywhere near that. He's actually on 15k a week which I don't think is bad considering his versatility and I think he has proved his worth. We simply want him moved on because he wants to head back to the Midlands for his family schooling sake. Providing he gets back fit then a move to either Wigan or Stoke is on the cards. As for Ins all I know is Ben Gibson and potentially 1 more but I don't have any names. Like stated from beginning, Randolph was the only big earner we were looking to let go this trans4 points

It is a bit mean-spirited but I wouldn't worry too much about it. I doubt there are any lampposts reading the forum who would be offended by the comparison.4 points

Can we have separate thread for CT and the other nerds?2 points

Don't read it then, makes no difference to me. Players being good enough and whether the club can afford them are one of the reasons we're 17th in league. You'd think that would be obvious but some people still don't seem to get it. I'd prefer if this stuff wasn't important as well but it is and while it is, I'm going to take an interest in it.2 points

Much rather debate ability on the pitch than exact wage numbers of players. If Shotton was the lowest paid player at the club I’d still want him out2 points

Don't understand posts like this, just petty and needless2 points

If it's true that he's on around £30k per week that has been mentioned on here then we'd be better off just letting him go. Say we extend him and then no bugger wants him or he gets injured again and we can't sell him. We'd be stuck with his wages for another year.2 points

Coulson is still living with his parents! Bet they put the rent up when he signed that new contract, like! 😅2 points

That is excellent news my favourite part is the awareness of Burnley using Gibson as bait, if Dyche puts his big boy pants on and gets to 15/16 million it will get tricky but at 10 million I can see why it's a non starter for us. I'm honestly quite shocked no one has come in for McNair again given his form and versatility what would we be able to ask for him at the moment in this market 10-12 million?2 points

Couple nice interviews over the last few days in the Gazette with Fry & Coulson. https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/dael-fry-middlesbrough-bad-patch-17590576 Dael Fry on his Middlesbrough 'bad patch' & his desire to 'step up and take responsibility' https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/hayden-coulson-middlesbrough-breakthrough-contract-17592528 Hayden Coulson on his Middlesbrough breakthrough, contract delight & importance of staying grounded Just in case anyone hasn't seen them yet! The way the market is now I would expect we probably would accept around £15 million2 points

Oxford was very young when he broke through at West Ham and probably not ready physically to be a fixture and fitting, especially in a premier league team. Perhaps he cannot settle in Germany, especially being out of the first team. He sort of fits the profile the club want in a signing. Someone who can maximise their potential over time. He also shares the same agent as Marvin Johnson so a relationship for negotiation is there. He must have some talent to break through at such a young age.2 points

2 separate deals... Gibson - Loan to Buy Fry - 16mil if Burnley stump up cash. Gibbo wants to return, fry wants to stay2 points

Really hope Roberts starts - he has a spark and energy we have missed since Traore left. Massive game. A win and we definitely go into the break looking up rather than down . Come on Boro1 point

Regarding Shotton, apparently like Gibson has apparently done with Downing, the Stoke board are keen to see Shotton return to the club, see him ending career there and having further role as coach/scout/ recruiter of local talent around the Potteries, however their views are in consistent opposition to the views of multiple managers, but O’neil Is apparently more open to this but as a quid pro quo for signings in the summer.1 point
-
No what I am saying is people automatically pressume that players join other clubs because of a pay increase in their basic salary and I am stating that isn't always the case because of signing on fees and whose to say that wasn't the case when Shotton joined Derby or Birmingham. Just because you have played football manager doesn't mean you get a good gage of what players are earning or not. I was absoutely gobsmacked when I was told figures of what players were on because I had no connections with players so just took everything with a pinch of salt but I thought I had a good idea1 point
-
Those figures have never come from me especially when Fletcher is on 12k a week which was a significant pay increase from what he was on at West Ham.1 point

Do we need to rush into selling him? I think the question is how much could we sell him for in the future? Don't get me wrong he has had a difficult season but does this mean we get rid after the first real interest shown in him.1 point
-
lots of players made fleeting appearances then never pushed on..Barron, Charlton, Bennion, Myton....must be many nearly men who we don't really talk about any more...remember going to watch reserves a few times and thinking that people like Stonehouse and Riby were going to break through and make headlines..didn't happen for them but some (Poskett)....fared better elsewhere.1 point
-
I'm hoping that three teams who wouldn't be automatic promotion contenders get relegated.......Bournemouth, Brighton and Norwich might fit the bill but a lot of it might depend on who doesn't do a runner to stay in Prem...don't really like Dyche as an opposing manager, but he has experience at getting teams promoted from this division and I would back him to take them straight back up again, so that would mean one less place to fight for.1 point

Fry for 15 million is probably the right price no disputing that. But ending up essentially paying 6-8 million for Gibson, wages aside, I have a problem with he'd do a decent job on the pitch no doubt but at a time where we are reigning in spending (rightly in my opinion) I don't see why we need a 6-8 million pound player especially at CB right now we aren't rounding up the promotion band and moving for Bolasies/Ritchies anymore I just put a Gibson move in that bracket to be honest the impact on the team minimal, relative cost high and feels like we'd be back to square 1 I'd rather see us bank1 point
-
We've always been a selling club if the price is right no one has ever thought we weren't right? It was 8 years ago Mowbray was pleading for people to buy pints and pies to help his budgets. My issue isn't so much with selling if the money is right with Fry I remember the murmurs in the summer was we wanted double and some what Burnley offered (8 million) so if that kind of ballpark 15-16 million comes in now I imagine we'd probably sell him. My issue is we make all these great strides financially by selling Randolph, selling Flint, selling Braithwaite, selling Bamford, cutting Downing loose a1 point
-
Please dont think we are selling Fry to bring in Gibson. We want them both at the club. The fact is we are now a selling club... if the money is right for any player they will be allowed to leave.1 point

Oh dear, this sounds like another Ayala mystery seasonal injury.1 point

That's exactly what I'd love to see. Dont think Tav has been as good last couple of matches when moved further forward. Howson is far more mobile and hopefully has picked up some better defensive nous so could fill that role well. Wing could challenge Mcnair/Tav with Clayton/Saville playing backups. As you say it does kinda scream out for a left sided attacking player although no reason Fletcher / Nemecha couldn't fill that role and have another look in the summer.1 point
-
But he struggled at West Ham as well so I don't think it is as simple as that. He didn't play much for West Ham, he didn't play much for Reading, he didn't play much for Borussia Monchengladbach and he didn't play much for Augsburg. I'm not saying he's a bust but that's four clubs at a fairly young age and two of those clubs are happy to move on from him despite him being contracted there and presumably on relatively low wages. If you thought there was a player there and money wasn't a factor then what would the sense be in moving him on? You'd keep him, work with him and develop the poten1 point
-
He maybe just struggled to adapt to a foreign country/league? It happens as we’ve seen for ourselves.1 point
-
The goal that ended him at Augsburg? I'm not going to quibble with this as such because you sound like you know far more about him than me, but a quick look at this season's stats would suggest that it wasn't down to any one incident. He's had a couple of 15 min sub appearances this season and two starts. All told he's played just over 300 mins of football this season so he's certainly not a regular who is being banished because of a mistake. Not being Bundesliga ready sounds like a polite way of saying he isn't good enough to me? They don't have a huge amount of money invested in him so1 point

We definitely should be looking to win this one. Both to get things back on track, following our defeats at Spurs & Fulham and to restore confidence & morale within the club. While Birmingham will be no push-overs, they certainly don't pose the sort of threat our previous opponents have. That, plus home advantage (even if it is a Tuesday evening), should see the lads making every effort to bounce back. As some have already mentioned, we need to start playing from the first whistle - not the second half. While we may be fatigued from the festive fixture crush, every other club1 point

Pears McNair Howson Fry Spence Coulson Wing Saville Nmecha Tavernier Fletcher I think Nmecha needs some gametime, Roberts on the bench is a good option, we know what he's capable of and I think Tav simply can't be dropped at this point. Otherwise the rest of the lineup speaks for itself given our injury problems.1 point
