  1. BRENTFORD v MIDDLESBROUGH. Introduction The transfer window is done and dusted, with 5 incomings during January and only 1 major departure. In a shock turn of events most Boro fans actually seem happy with the clubs recruitment. Neither of our deadline signings featured in the 1-1 draw with Blackburn, which extended our winless run to 6 games. This run has come after a big upturn in form over Christmas leaving most fans confused over how to feel about our prospects for the rest of the season. Saturdays opponents Brentford are in a rich vein of form and are righ

  2. I think Rudy did well .. Might be an unpopular opinion, but to bring himself in position for those chances is good work on it's own. With more game time he will be more sharp. With him on the pitch getting in those positions, it will create more space for our other players. If their keeper didn't make that super save, Rudy has the match winning goal .. and then no one would bat an eye, that he missed a sitter few minutes later .. 3rd one was not that big of a chance.

  3. I think Rudy has done well too since coming back into the fold recently. He's a nice option to have, to try something different and cause problems throwing such a big unit on there late in the game, which does create space for other players. He's a massive drain on resources though just to do that. It's not his fault I guess that we signed him during a PL season and his wages are so beefy now for his output, given his long he injuries aswell.

  4. I don't mind losing this if it helps Brentford overtake Leeds in the top 2

  5. Excellent post @BearSmog. Great use of GIFs. I would stick with the 3.4.3 but hopefully Moukoudi match fit to start so paddy can move further forward. Pears Howson Moukoudi Fry Spence Paddy Clayton Wing Coulson Fletcher Rudy/Nmecha I know i might get slated for starting Rudy/Nmecha but i dont think we will see much of the ball at griffin park and this game might require more a classic away type performance. Hoping one of them can be that outlet for when we do have ball. Tav has looked tired for me last few games so not sure if he just needs to keep out

  7. I'm the biggest Downing 2nd spell critic ever butttttt I'm going to say a flash in the pan mediocre 1 season Vossen commenting on a bloke who took Boro to a European final is pretty bizarre and shouldn't really even be a thing at all? Honestly if Clayton or Friend who've been here 14 years between them come out and subtlely comment on Downing I'd take it on board but Vossen what is he even doing it seems bizarre. See Joe Gibson on the bench for the 23s today he's been brilliant for the 18s not really got beyond a cameo for the 23s yet he might be in for a breakout at that level in t

  8. Would vossen and downing have ever crossed paths here? Downing joined the summer after Jelle's loan spell ended.

  9. Wow, that's super positive, though even Arsenal aren't in the top half at the moment so the top half is certainly opening up to teams like us!

  11. We are Brentford's bogey team, so I see some sort of result in our favour.

  14. Definitely agree with this. I was reading Steven Gerrard say about Jordan Jones that Jones tried to impress rangers fans by flying in to tackles etc v Celtic when what will impress the fans is assists and goals. I read it thinking this seems to be Browne issue too. I like his enthusiasm but he needs to channel it to playing football and not being stupid and rash.

  15. Exactly mate. And i can't even criticise Rudy on that. There was not much more he could have done there.

  16. how much better did we look with 4 at the back btw. with them 3 playing center is a free run at them once you turn the midfield, they just back off and dont attack the ball. to concede that goal was shocking. but suppose it was a nice goal from their point of view. but if big danny is on the pitch and probably the new french lad that ball wouldnt have got in the box. knew once ayala went off injured we were waving goodbye to the slim playoff hopes. thats how its turned out. rudy should have scored a couple. he's having a mare, bet he's gutted. without all the injury issues he'd by gobbl

  17. Always hurts more when at the end of a game, had he hit the target we would have won and he would have been a hero! Small margins

  19. Few weeks ago i said we were not safe with our 10pt lead on 3rd bottom and got told i needed to stop being such a bed-wetter. Someone even recommended i get pampers on here. Haha. I then thought maybe i am worrying too much so damn you those posters who let me half think we were safe. Lead will be 6pts if scores remain as they are. COME ON BORO!!!!

  20. I still we think we play pretty decent, if its one team who deserve to lead this game its us... but thats football for you.....

  21. Blackburn 7 points better off, with reasonable form and have knocked in 42 goals so far which is 13 more than us. Will Downing be given a run out and will he take advance attacking our weak wings. It’s a hard game to predict. I am going with a BORO win because SD produced the match day thread.

Questions -   What team would you pick? Dieng Jones McNair VDB Clarke Bangura O’Brien Azaz Howson Latte Lath Silvera   What's your favourite thing about Leeds? The countryside that surrounds it. I’ve got family in Rawdon and Yeadon and it’s beautiful around those parts   What are the odds on Bamford cheating yet again? It’s odd because he never cheated when he played for us! 👀   Will we derail their promotion push even further? I’d like them to go up, I hate playing them, but I bet we draw with them.

Nothing in it for us except help prevent Leeds getting into an automatic spot.

The issue isn't playing out from the back, the issue is decision making on when, where and how.  If the opponents are closing, down, swarming and pressurising it can be effective by unlocking them and catching them up field however it is also far more likely to result in being bullied out of possession, putting us at risk or as we seen recently a poor ball to O'Brien leaving us stuffed. Having outlets making and creating space and time is crucial whether you play out from the back or go long. Simply hoofing it isn't the answer any more than playing a suicide ball to a player being rapidly closed down 20 yards out from our own goal. It's not the tactic that's at fault, it's the application and implementation of it which comes down to the skill, intelligence, awareness and ability of individuals. Chuba was great at holding the ball up and playing in team mates, we don't have that skill set this season and it's showed, having a Giles to be unleashed down the left hasn't been available this season, both were key to how we played last season. The loss of those outlets haven't helped us and those are just two examples. That said with the speed of Jones and ELL, playing it long can also be a serious threat to our opposition but neither tactic will work if players aren't looking up, alert and aware of their next pass/movement and to me that is the biggest difference between last season's passing it out from the back and this season. We passed out at speed and with cutting accuracy last season, this year we seem less confident, hesitant, slow and have created more problems for ourselves on many occasions because of it.  The massive summer upheaval in personnel hasn't helped and confidence and belief won't have helped with the start to the season that ensued. I'm sure many of the new signings were less than convinced as we set that record poor start statistic. Over time it's improved but nowhere close to our ability to pass out that we had last season, hence the frustrations and discussions.

I'd quite happily take a draw now, it keeps them down, keeps the unbeaten run going and keeps things very interesting in the promotion race.
