The Evening Gazette has said that Steve Gibson is against a director of football because it would add another 6 figure salary onto the wage bill. I can't help but question whether that is the true motive as it appears to be more down to Gibson wanting to retain power. The best way to assess whether this 6 figure salary is value for money, is to consider how Steve Gibson and his loyal courtiers like Gary Gill and co are actually performing with the powers that they have which, if we were to appoint a director of football, would be taken away from them. Firstly, how much has our knee-jerkin7 points

Last game of the season and our defenders don't care, so Why should we, Why should I care to make this thread Any good? For you, dear Friends, for you! If Wigan get that 12 points deduction, we are safe... But is that a guarantee? Barnsley won v Forest and Huddersfield and Stoke found that little extra to beat good teams when needed, can we find something? If Charlton and Luton win while Brum gets a draw or a win while we lose, we Will end in the bottom three and rely on other teams to get deductions to stay up... Let us know your thought on this? My grandfather-in-law has just turned 80 (bear with me, there's a point to this). He's still pretty active, still runs his businesses in his inimitable old-school way, and apart from surrendering his driving licence, is in reasonable health. Nor is he exceptional as an active octogenarian. People keep saying Warnock will only be here for a year or so because of his age, but is that really the case? Yes he's 71, but he's seemingly incapable of retiring, he loves the Boro, and he's enjoying the job so much he apparently hasn't discussed wages yet. If he wanted to stay for a couple of season3 points

Sheffield Wednesday's home form has been almost as bad as Boro's. They beat Charlton six games ago and since then in the last five they have lost to Derby, West Brom and Preston and drawn against Forest and Huddersfield. After Leeds, Boro have the second best away form in the Championship over the last six games having won four and lost two (Leeds have won five and lost one). In selective, emotional statistics we trust!2 points

At least they didn't turn up fart, embarrass themselves and leave and are still in there fighting even possibly surviving for another season. Whilst I'm in no way advocating their approach or supportive of it, it puts Boro's effort into perspective. It wasn't so long ago that like Burnley, Bournemouth and Brighton we were contesting with them to get out of the Championship. The end of the article where its says "suggests the wrong people are doing the appointing, or the wrong tools are being placed at their disposal" rings true for both Boro and Watford. Can I just say that there has been some fantastic chat on here regarding boro stuff and particularly the Spence, Howson and defensive aspect of the boro tonight. Itās been a great read @Changing Times and @diggerlad07 so thank you. Itās interesting the different view points you both have on our defence. On the stats side itās surprising that we arenāt actually that bad as it feels. Because watching us this season, Iād have said itās one of our worst in terms of defending when watching the games, but the stats say otherwise. For me I think itās the lack of direction that ou2 points

As it's looking a virtual certainty that Warnock is going to get the job for next season, it's worth noting both the significant positives and negatives that will result from Warnock being our manager, and also how accommodating his style of football will effect our long term direction once he inevitably leaves. Clearly, Warnock is a very effective manager who knows how to assemble promotion winning Championship teams on a tight budget. In simple terms he's the perfect manager to get us out of the situation we are currently in. I think the timing of us having so many players out of contract, w1 point

The Wigan appeal will fail. The Sheff Wed situation is a slightly different story so their punishment could be just about anything.1 point

Seems like the foundations of the EFLs top league is built on sand. Wigan, Birmingham, Derby, Sheff Wed, Charlton and goodness knows who else, yet little Barnsley who seem to do things the right way are the ones most likely to be punished by relegation. I think it was similar last year with Rotherham, the only team to make a profit and were relegated.1 point

Imagine if the team which finishes 22nd, but is technically keeping up due to Wiganās 12 point deduction, starts planning for next season so pays big transfer fees and hands out 3 and 4 year long Championship level wages, only to then be told a few weeks later āoh actually, Wiganās appeal was successful, so youāre relegatedā. That club is then stuck with financial obligations over 3 and 4 year deals that will cripple them. Also, if the 22nd place club did not start acting like itās business as usual, and holds off signing players conscious of Wiganās appeal, it will place them at a huge c1 point

That Mail story is based on some lawyer telling the journalist that appeals can be too lengthy and owed due process will mean penalties deferred which seems a huge stretch in both cases. In Wigan's case it's a cut and dry offence, an automatic penalty which they are appealing already to a panel on Force Majeure grounds which would be hard to prove but easily disproved that appeal wont be lengthy. Wednesday were essentially charged over 200 days ago I don't see how you can find an offence and charge it one season then wait a year and apply it the following season seems like if they're stil1 point

But good news all the same. As I have said before. I don't care how we survive as long as we survive. It's not like anyone gave a toss when we got relegated from the prem under Robson due to points deduction, So stuff em.1 point

Barnsley won v Forest and Huddersfield and Stoke found that little extra to beat good teams when needed, can we find something? Hopefully and we're due a good result on the Jekyll/Hyde-ometer. We've managed to put together some positive results on the road and Sheff Wed's home form lately is poor albeit against decent sides. Monkbot in the dugout, Reach/Rhodes potentially on the pitch and Hillsborough holding some bad memories for us screams Typical Boro, though. I understand and fully agree with you. But the advantage we have now is a manager that could get the right players not necessarily the best and get the team to perform better than the sum of its parts (fingers crossed š¤)1 point

Roy Hodgson is 73 in a couple of weeks. He's done pretty well with Crystal Palace since joining in 2017. Warnock seems to know how to put a team together and I think anything would be better than the tripe we've been served up this season. He certainly has the enthusiasm, hopefully the energy and could (with his knowledge of the Championship) sort out the club regarding transfers etc. with his no-nonsense approach. Age is all in the mind. I speak from experience!1 point

That's because it is one of our worst in terms of defending in recent seasons. In our previous four seasons these are our goals conceded and rank in the Championship: 2014/15 37 goals conceded, ranked 1st. 2015/16 31 goals conceded ranked 1st. 2017/18 45 goals conceded ranked joint 4th. 2018/19 41 goals conceded ranked joint 1st. So for the previous four Championship season we are used to seeing a team excel defensively. This season we are currently ranked 12th in the Championship having conceded 60 goals. Before the lock down I think we were 10th having conceded 471 point

Surely got to pick apart the Wigan corpse and sign one or more of their players. It's not all down to their manager that they're in this stunning run of form, some decent players in there.1 point

Given a choice of Warnock and Pearson Iād definitely prefer Pearson. Heās applied for the job a few times already though and not got it so maybe Gibson isnāt keen on him. Probably for the reasons already mentioned such as him not being a yes man. watford is a mad house though, who would want to work there?1 point

Nice one SD! Liking the nautical theme of your post (or your house at least). No pictures of longships though? Barnsley won v Forest and Huddersfield and Stoke found that little extra to beat good teams when needed, can we find something? Amazingly I still think we can. Just checked Wednesday's recent form and its...indifferent to say the least. Like Boro they have done well on the road lately, but have been poor at home. This could be key. If Charlton and Luton win while Brum gets a draw or a win while we lose, we Will end in the bottom three and rely on other teams to1 point

Fair points. I think the difference with Boro is that, being a former player, he knows the club, knows the area and will probably have had some dealings with Gibson at some point (don't know if thats a positive or negative). Might make him change his approach...but then again maybe not. He may not even want the job, but I think its worth at least finding out if he'd be interested. As you say, Warnock's departure is inevitable and Gibson needs to draw up a short list of possible replacements. ...and I believe it will be a very short list...1 point

How dare you! I can't forget stats. The entire season is based around them so really you have to take them into account plus I'd have less to talk about and how bad would that be for the forum š¤Ø We are about average in terms of our defence. The number of shots we face is also in the middle of the Championship. What has been worse for us is the number of shots we've faced inside the penalty area, where we are one of the worst. I think that is what has been noticed and noticeable and that's where the defence is crap has come from. The simple fact though is it's nowhere near as bad as1 point

I am confident that we will survive by default due to Wigans 12point penalty being confirmed. No doubt at all in my mind. I am as equally confident that we will get hammered on Wednesday, by Wednesday. The mercurial āput a shift inā Howson decided he didnāt want to so took a second booking in the style of a very similar player in Gary Oneil. Still it will be interesting to see just how good Mcnair and Saville will be, again!!! A beached blackburn beat Reading yesterday. A beached QPR also beat play off chasing Millwall. A already safe stoke beat automatic chasing Brentford. Sometimes clubs with nothing to play for are on beach but dont underestimate the mental side of the game where having nothing to play for allows you to make better decisions on ball and just play..well better.1 point

If Dijksteel does not start this, then the writing really is on the wall for him, if its jot already anyway. I actually don't think he will start. I think Paddy will come in and we will change to a wing back system with Jones and EngelĀ - which will say a lot about what MC thinks of Dijksteel in not trustingĀ him at RB or as a 3rd CB (he played his best football there for us) Also would not be surprised to see Hackney replace Greenwood and plsy in an advanced role but rather Silveria or GilbertĀ there: Dieng Paddy VDB Clarke Jones Howson O'Brien Engel Silveria LL AzazĀ
