  1. I know Clayton wasn't Makelele and now he's not the player he was, but he got totally underrated on this board as well. He was as good as anyone in the division for a couple of seasons and that wasn't just for his tackling ability, he could play as well.

  2. Here's an even better question but it's quite a long one. Why did we sign Bamford and Gestede for a manager that didn't want them at the time, then 6 months later, appoint a different manager who also didn't want them, and allow that manager to spend nearly £30m on three more strikers, then sack him 6 months later, and appoint the next manager who didn't want any of those three, and wasn't that fussed about the other two either?

  3. EFL Cup - Middlesbrough v Barnsley, 6pm Tuesday 15th September Scene 1: Int (Daytime) [A café table at Scotch Corner Services. Neil Warnock is eating a full English breakfast when a man in dark glasses and a raincoat sidles up and sits in the seat behind him, back to back.] WARNOCK: Ey up, lad. SCOUT: Don’t turn around. We’ll talk like this. WARNOCK: Oh God, not this Breaking Bad cosplay again. Just tell us what you found out about Barnsley before I put something in your tea. SCOUT [sighing]: You’re no fun any more. You should have retired back in the Eighties. [He pulls out

  4. I just thought that money talked rather than Pulis wanting rid of him and we had to take the money. Was gutted when he left as he's the best finisher we have had at the club in a long while.

  6. Yes I agree Watford were very organised their back 3 yesterday was very good, their defence is probably the best in the league. Craig Cathcart is an international with plenty of Premier league and championship experience, Christian Kabasele gets in the Belgium squad occasionally and Wilmot is an England under 21 player who had a decent season on loan at Swansea last season, their Wing backs were Kiko (who in fairness is a right back that played left back lastnight) is a very good player at this level and has played at Real Madrid and Barcelona, the young lad Ngakia was getting into West Hams

  7. Just because you mention the 14/15 play-off final, in the 2014/15 season this was the top 8 teams at the end of it. (I've ignored below 8th as there was close to a 10 points gap by the end of the season). That season we lost to Bournemouth (A) and drew at home. We lost to Watford (A) and drew at home. We beat Norwich home and away. We beat Brentford home and away. We lost to Ipswich (A) and beat them at home. We lost to Wolves (A) and beat them at home. We beat Derby home and away. We won 8 games out of the 14 we played against the top 8. That's a win pe

  8. How could we have tried harder? I dont remember a single poster on here suggesting friend should get anymore than 12 months. He got a 3yr deal at Birmingham at the age of 32 yrs old. If the club offered him that there would have been a meltdown on here

  10. Because we're a well run club with consistent long term strategies in place who definitely aren't about to let go another 20+ million in players for free next summer 👍

  11. The absolute desperation for Karanka to succeed over Boro, it's literally one game. They got beat off Cambridge last week

  12. I’m sure given Warnock age and experience he does his talking directly man to man and not through media.. I don’t read to much in what journalists speculate.

  13. A friendly word of advice. Saying "i told you so" after 1 game when there are 45 games left is not wise. You could end up with egg on your face come end of season.

  14. Yes true I forgot about Ben Foster I really rate him. Even the cente back that they had on the bench is a Chilean international, we will come up against worse defenders this season and I think we will do well.

  15. The fact is that at this exact moment our squad is weaker than what we had at this point last season but the performance was much better than anything Woodgate managed to serve up. With 3 or 4 good additions to the starting XI that started last night I think we will do ok and we could see some of the doom and gloom on here starting to lift. I'm a half glass full kind of person and I definitely saw positives last night

  16. If I was neutral watching that game I would analyse it as two mediocre sides with no stand out individual on show. Bearing in mind one team was made up largely of squad players then the performance could be expected. Us ? All old failings still on view. Problems from years still exist. And the opinion this group of players are devoid collectively of being able to rectify the situation and eliminate the problems. That is the most challenging and worrying aspect

  17. Dijksteel was brilliant. Britt closed players quickly and held the ball up better than I’ve seen him do before. Johnson didn’t do much (if anything) wrong defensively but didn’t get forward much in the first half. When defending 1v1 out wide our players mostly came out on top, but there was too many gaps through the middle. Spence was too slow to get back and defend, always the wrong side and looked reluctant going forward. Yet somehow he always seemed to be shouting at other players. Bettinelli didn’t have much to do apart from their goal. We got balls and players in the box bu

  18. I really cannot believe the moaning on here. We were the better team by far and just got no luck at all. If you removed both goalkeepers we would have won about 7-2 but because we lost the anti Boro doom mongers are wetting the bed again 🙄 Unbelievable

  19. Looks like all the clubs in the championship are of the same opinion as you @BoroJake Nobody seems to want anything to do with him. There has to be a reason for that

  22. Why Pulis didn't want him after he managed to score a fair few goals for him is beyond me. One of those players that could have gone down as a Boro legend if he'd had the right manager (or rather, never had the wrong manager) who actually appreciated what he brought and didn't try to make him something he isn't. I can't imagine anyone except Pulis would have wanted rid of him either, royally pisses me off.

  25. Not sure if anyone's picked up on it but Warnock has basically ripped the Sheff U system and implemented it here, look at how often McNair/Dijksteel get forward to midfield positions as our midfielders push onto the oppositions backline or overlap our wingback when there's a gap. Fletcher's the McGoldrick running and dropping into wherever space is, the main problem for me is our wingbacks are shocking and for it to work you need consistent delivery from them that's where it's falling apart for us in attack right now.

  27. I'm not talking about shooting ability, I agree with you that Clayton can't shoot. You said the Clayton of 5 years couldn't shoot or pass, that video proves that he can pass the ball. I watched pretty much every game he played under Karanka and in 2014/15 and 2015/16 he was a very important part of the team. That video is a tiny snapshot but he showed in that video he could cross the ball, pass short/long and receive the ball under pressure. You obviously don't rate him very highly but to say the 2015 version of Clayton couldn't pass the ball is complete nonsense. Clayt

  28. I would say they were the right decisions but we haven't replaced people and perhaps mistakes have happened behind the scenes with scouting and negotiating. So far we have (again) signed a centre back and a centre midfielder. It's like that's the entirety of our scouting network.

  29. Clayton has absolutely immense for two seasons under Karanka, was asked to play a DM role and done it perfectly. Personally loved watching us play in that Era going into games bossing midfield.

  31. They had loads of quality players out 17 in fact, some of them will be sold but they will still have plenty of players that will probably be too good for this division coming in, I know who I would rather watch given the choice and it ain't Boro. Watford were aware that they had a makeshift team out with so many players missing and knew they wouldn't be at their best in attack so played an organised defensive game and they done a job on us. It was a professional performance by Watford and I disagree that they were hanging on if we were still out on Vicarage Road playing now I doubt we would ha

  32. I think we all put too much emphasis on ‘attractive’ football, thinking of Barca etc. I’d rather see ‘exciting’ football. More along the lines of what Klopp has done at Liverpool, I think his style is much more flexible and accessible for a club our size than peps hipster football. I think when people criticise managers for playing ugly football it’s not that they expect us to play like Man City, it’s that when we come up against smaller teamsters continue to do the hoofs and diagonals and just generally look ragged. We don’t even TRY to play half decent football and often in recent times

  34. Some people *** the bed and some people were realistic. I had us down in predictions for a loss of this game. Reality is 1st game of season and we are playing the team predicted to walk league. 1-Nil defeat isn't bad considering. I know Watford wasn't at full strength but you also argue we are a few away from the squad we want too. Good to see we weren't handed our asses to at least. Looking forward to next game and hopefully one or two more signings to add. At least we now have the midfield tank I wanted.

  35. If you expect us to be top two then you are going to be disappointed. If you think we are going to struggle the way we did last season then you are going to be pleasantly surprised. On tonight’s performance we have 10-14th written all over us. If we get 3-4 in before the window closes then Warnock might be able to weave his magic and get us close to the play-offs.

  36. Saville, Howson and McNair are so frustrating.... Every time we win the ball, we are in position to break, but those 3 *** slows everything down, letting the opponent get back in position.. Tight and neady, but no contributing to the attacking play at all.. We are really good at knicking the ball, but we Then slow mo real bad.. Hoping this Morsy will put one of the above permanent on the bench.. The 3 points were there for the taking, but Pulis kept whispering inside the Minds of our ineffective midfielders.. Tough first game.. We Will get better

  37. Sigh No he didn't. He worked his socks off. He held the ball up really well & played some really good stuff through him. He should have done better with the header, I agree, but I don't even think you can class that as the best chance when Grant Halls miss exists.

  42. I sincerely hope he wasn't refusing to use subs to make a point. There were points up for grabs. I'd say it's more likely he didn't feel the subs would improve us, which is a pretty damning indictment of Coulson and Bola at the very least, given that Johnson couldn't get in the game at all. I seriously hope Coulson gets his chance in the Barnsley game as it's a bit pathetic that probably our best young player last season can't get a game for this manager because he sees something in Johnson at full back that literally none of the rest of us can.

  43. Agreed, despite all their missing forwards, that is a top quality defence they have and I think they'll nullify a lot of teams. They have arguably the best GK in the league & probably one of the best groups of CBs IMO.

  45. I was quite pleased with the performance and it was a relief Boro weren't hammered off the park but it was as far as I know an understrength Watford? Overall I thought the lack of quality in the Boro side showed and I do worry that Boro will struggle to avoid a relegation battle again. It may not be as tight as last season but I can't see Boro challenging for promotion. Hopefully we can't read too much into one game but the lack of quality and finishing ability is maybe worrying.
