  1. Regarding Valdes. Are we really discussing the ability of a goalkeeper who has literally won every trophy possible and clocked up nearly 400 appearances for a team that was probably the best club side seen by an entire generation? The regular and quite ridiculous argument directed at Valdes was he had little to do for Barca such was they dominance. Do people genuinely think to be a keeper at the best club on the planet for as long as he was, that all you need to do is be able stand between two posts? Do people know how hard it is to even become a professional footballer at a half decent l

  2. I'm just glad to get sport back, at the end of the day if a team has a slight advantage to another who cares. Its the same with covid, a team could lose a star player for a fortnight if they catch it just like teams can be unlucky with injuries. I saw Lampard moaning about it the other day and some times I think you've got to suck it up and get on with it. Life's not fair and sometimes football isn't either.

  3. Also just wanted to say RIP David Prowse...known by millions of kids in the 70s and 80s as the Green Cross Code Man and arguably sci-fi's best known villain...Darth Vader... https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-55117704 Starting out as a competitive weight lifter, he had a long, if low-key career outside of Star Wars, appearing in numerous other films and tv roles. He also worked behind the scenes as a writer and personal trainer.

  6. I thought Valdes was pretty good on the whole, yeah he made a few mistakes but he wasn't a bad keeper. I enjoyed watching him with the ball at his feet, his distribution was unbelievable! Obviously things turned sour in the end and that tarnished his reputation here. I think a lot of our fans never took to him because he pushed Dimi out of the team.

  7. I fully expect that we will be back in full lockdown by mid January; at least in the North and Midlands (London and the South might get spared as putting them into another lockdown would be politically more damaging for the government in the longer-term due to voting patterns). Allowing the Christmas window and then locking us down again after enables the government to be seen to be doing something about the virus and all the 'irresponsible' people in the North, and therefore keeps their core Southern voters happy. I will admit that I have broken the current lockdown, but I have done so

  8. Theres been some revisionism of valdes's time here amongst our fans. He started off shakey but for a good 4 or 5 months he was a very good keeper for us in the premier League. Then he downed tools when karanka left and he tarnished what he had done before.

  9. I'm not really talking about that. I'm talking about the act of sliding to meet a ball coming at speed across you. Of course he should have scored it but I don't think it's as easy as people are making out, that's all. The proximity to the goal makes it look like a tap-in but it isn't. How many times do you see a cross fired in like that and the defender put it in the back of the net while trying to block or clear it? Because it's not easy to control what happens when it's driven in, and it's even harder when you're sliding.

  10. my late wife met him at a fan convention in Harrogate some years back and she said he came across as a very straightforward guy, spent a considerable time chatting to her and her friend and even got a couple of the other guests (Kenny Baker and Jeremy Bulloch, I think) to do the same. Viewed himself as an ordinary person who'd been lucky in life and was just as happy to send himself up as play serious roles, but took the Green Cross Code very seriously to the extent that he was prouder of that than his role in Star Wars... One of his favourite sketches

  11. I think Bettinelli is a good organiser and engages with his defence. His Goalkeeping ability is average at this level like a lot of other Keepers. I think we have to remember that if he was great he wouldn't be here. When Shay Given came on loan just watching him was a joy and that was including the warm ups where he was aware of the kids walking behind the goal waving flags when he used to tell the players to stop firing practice shots at him in case it hit one of the little ones. Small things but they matter and tell a lot about the man. He always made marks in the turf (probably much t

  12. It is very unfair I feel all our promotion rivals can have their fans back but we can't. If the whole league can't have fans back no one should as it results in unfair advantage!

  13. We appear to be ball number 25 in tomorrow nights draw. Given present circumstances, not sure whether to hope for a quick exit to avoid fatigue and injuries or a decent run to boost confidence. Either way just hope we get matched with a team that are from lower in the leagues so that if they win, they get a bit of extra cash at a time that could help them and if we win, then hopefully will allow us to give some squad players a run out. Don't want to see another Prem draw.. strange how they nearly always manage to avoid meeting each other until the latter stages

  16. Think I’ll chalk this one up to one of those days. Too many players were having a off day. Players that a are usually solid for us. Paddy, Dijksteel, Fry, Tav and Saville were all well below par. Britt was even below his usual low standard. The disappointing thing was how NW reacted to it off more accurately how inactive he was. Huddersfield were very average to but luckily they got us on exactly the right day for them. It’s all about how we react on Wednesday now as Swansea will be a tough game. Just watching them now and they look pretty good. Certainly in midfield but they seem to hav

  17. You're in a similar situation to me by the sounds of it...although I'm not classed as vulnerable. I have some sympathy for the government in that, when you're trying to implement a national policy, you nearly always have to make some assumptions and sweeping generalisations and end up with something that doesn't quite fit everyone. They also (naively IMO) gave a fair bit of leeway at times and assumed everyone would act responsibly...which contributed to us still being in this mess. If you act responsibly and keep your distance, mask up when necessary, use hand sanitiser etc. th

  18. I support your argument of players having more game time then others but again after 14 games with international breaks I don’t buy into fatigue being a major factor but again I’m not saying it won’t factor at some point. We have registered players GK. 4, Defenders 8 midfield, 9 and strikers 8 we could argue some play out of position but thats the managers choice. Now quality is a different subject all together as is the systems played and Brit is a typical statical example of both. I didn’t think we looked tired but lost and chasing a game that got out of hand and I would even s

  19. Valdes's weaknesses were exposed here, he hardly ever had to deal with crosses at Barca for a start, he was hammered with them for us. Plus he was still pretty rusty. He was a damn good shot stopper though and saved us in a lot of games while he was here, people tend to forget that.

  20. I said we'd finish mid-table, didn't I? DIDN'T I? Fact is, we're not going to win enough games to get anywhere near the playoffs. Warnock's too scared to play advanced attacking football and he'll use this as justification for setting us up ultra defensively against Swansea. Oh and Britt is a *** donkey and needs dropping. We need Fletcher back asap.

  21. There's breaking the rules by going to see your family for a much needed bit of social interaction, and there's breaking the rules by having a *** house party every weekend. Guess which one my family have been doing and guess which one our *** neighbours have been doing?

  22. Sorry to hear about your situation, it must be tough being isolated from people. You say you have broken the rules but I wouldnt beat yourself up over that, you need to get out and see people sometimes. I do believe that some elements of our population have made the situation worse by breaking the rules but I certainly wouldn't lump you in that category.

  24. I think some of the players today looked fatigued, in my opinion. NW not picking certain players, not making substitutions earlier or even using all 5 allowed substitutions (recently), will further fatigue certain players as they will have to continue to play on. Howson, McNair, Dijksteel, Saville and Tav have all played over 1100 minutes so far this season. Only Brentford have the same amount of outfield players (5) as us, to have played over 1100 minutes. So although we both agree we are in the same predicament as every other team, our circumstances in terms of player numbers are certainly d

  25. Ok Erimus the Swansea game is yours to do and we play Wednesday so the thread needs to be up late Monday at the latest or there is not time for sufficient pre match comments. Also and not to confuse things put the thread up in the main forum, not the archive section as no-one will see it. Cheers. @OldManGravz you follow Erimus74, thanks!

Midweek FA Cup games always blur into the endless midweek PL and Championship fixture rounds, especially since they tend to be played on the same days with cup-involved teams postponing their fixtures. Glad to see the FAC being given a higher profile, and I agree that the home advantage will be magnified for lower league teams who aren't going to get walloped in the replay if they draw their home game. I do wonder if some smaller teams in financial trouble might agitate to swap their home ties for away ones to boost gate receipts, though. Those replays at bigger grounds will have brought in some valuable cash for minnows over the years.

hopefully get some mad results along the way given the bigger clubs can't rely on a replay to bail them out when the little team gets the upper hand or stays neck a neck with them

In the last 10 seasons, and I'll exclude goalkeepers, these are the players we've signed from League One: Matt Crooks (after relegation) Uche Ikpeazu (after relegation) Sam Morsy (after relegation) Duncan Watmore Anfernee Dijksteel (after promotion) Marc Bola Paddy McNair (after relegation) Marvin Johnson Lee Tomlin (mid-season after relegation) James Husband (after relegation) Albert Adomah (after relegation)   It's not a big list of players at all, and almost all of them, bar Husband and Ikpeazu, were decent signings. You could also easily exclude 7 of those players since they'd played the last season in the Championship, leaving the list as Watmore, Dijksteel, Bola and Marvin Johnson.

Che Adams was signed from League One by Birmingham, after being signed from non-League by Sheffield United. Josh Brownhill started his career at a League One club and was signed by Bristol City on the back of a League One loan.
