  1. @AnglianRed@Blanco@boro-unger@DanFromDownSouth@DurhamRed@Maccarone@marvin@Motor Mouth@RiseAgainst@Smogzilla@Snowblind@trekkers@Uwe@Youngy228 EDIT - Welcome to the Euro 2020 Predictions Competition. There are 14 human players who have signed up. To make 16 which is ideal for the format and not wanting to have 'Byes' like we do in main league I will add 2 x AI players (one for each group) which will be PaddyPower. The AI will predict the fixtures for all group stage matches on 1st June. The prediction will be based on lowest odds (if more than one a random generator will select).

  2. I think there'll be a lot of players having to accept wage cuts or ending up unattached this summer. And that's not a bad thing. Football finance is a bucket with no bottom - the faster you pour broadcasting revenue in at the top, the faster it floods out the bottom on player wages, without even touching the sides. If the likes of Bolassie and Moses accept they need a significant pay cut to continue playing first team football rather than rotting in the stiffs or working out at home waiting for a phone call, that'll benefit football as a whole, not just us.

  3. If you have time watch the U23’s highlights at Palace. They play expansive attacking football, play out from the back and actually create chances with the ball on the floor. Why is this model not being continued into the first team? All our youth players are used to playing good football and get thrown into playing under the Pulis’ and Warnock’s of the world. Makes no sense. Malley would be brilliant in the first team if we played the same way as the 23’s FYI.

  4. Big week for the youth teams. All available to watch online. U23s need a positive result to guarantee a play off place on Friday. Both games to be streamed for free on YouTube.

  5. I've always been of the opinion you should attack and defend as a team. When you don't have the ball, you should either be actively trying to win it back, or at least closing the opposition down and trying to stop them getting toward your goal. The decisive moment usually comes down to one player failing to do something, but I think usually you can look at the build up to the goal and say a number of players should have done better. Though Bettinelli is still terrible and needs to go.

  6. Come on Rotherham. You need to win tonight so that Sheffield Wednesday can win on Saturday to relegate both themselves and Derby.

  8. Yeah they did under Pulis after his strong season at Ipswich. Think we both agreed £5m fee for him but they offered more wages

  9. We do have to look at the relative positions of the two clubs right now and ask if a player is willing to leave a team that's currently higher up the division than ours, though. Are Barnsley lucky to be where they are? Are we unlucky to be where we are? And after all, he's not going to play for Middlesbrough in the 90s or the 00s, he'd be playing for Boro in the 20s. It's the choice of us right now or somebody else right now. I don't think, for example, Alex Mowatt would give a toss how many managers Barnsley have had since the millennium. We have to ask what our club is right now relative to

  10. apologies if its been said already but this quote from warnock got me thinking 'As Warnock has discussed a lot of late, he's pleased with the nucleus of his squad and the likes of Anfernee Dijksteel, Marc Bola, Dael Fry, Grant Hall, Jonny Howson, Marcus Tavernier and Duncan Watmore will all play central roles next season' strange theres no mention of mcnair or saville , mcnair especially would probably be my first name on the teamsheet . Wonder if theres plans to sell them on .

  11. Considering we aren't looking for a centre forward who scores goals so much as one who literally bullies defenders and brings others into play, we don't have to go too wild over being linked with lumps like Waghorn. We don't need a 20+ goal striker to play how Warnock wants us to play. We just need someone who is going to make the ball stick at the right end of the pitch. Akpom doesn't really do enough in that regard (Warnock has said a few times how disappointed he's been with him, and I don't just think he means goal output) and players like Britt have always been useless at it. I

  12. Depends. Based on league positions, no. Based on the number of years the clubs have been in the Premier League and the training facilities on offer at Rockliffe, God yes. All things considered? There's a discussion to be had, at least. Turn the argument on its head - apart from league positions this season, why would you leave Boro for Barnsley? You might prefer their current manager to ours, but they only just survived in the Championship last season, and they've had twice as many managers as we have since the Millennium, so they're hardly an example of stability or prosperity. This isn'

  13. Ye finally games streamed on YouTube long time coming as these games seem alot more enjoyable than the first teams 😂🤣 This is why we need a director of football though so there is the pathway as it is rather bonkers how we train our youth to play a certain way then reach first team they are asked to do the complete opposite to what they've been taught

  14. At the moment, would you leave Barnsley for Boro? Even if they don't get promoted this season. I also think that a midfielder on a free transfer who's just got into the EFL team of the season will probably have plenty of offers other than us and Barnsley, teams coming down being the big ones. Sheffield United, West Brom and Fulham will undoubtedly have a look to see if they can find a place for him.

  16. The deadline for entrants was Saturday . Ideally I needed one more for the league to run properly therefore I have decided to add an AI predictor - Paddy Power. They will compete as a player. Their predicted score will be the lowest odds offered on correct score market for group stages this score will be taken for all 36 group games on 1st June. In the event of more than one score with lowest odds a random generator will select the score. Have begun making spreadsheet and a few other things for the competition. Will start a new thread later where I will introduce competition format etc.

  21. Or you could just ask how many of our players would make Norwich's first team squad (never mind starting 11). Maybe Tav, Bolasie and Dijksteel? I think the "9 or 10 top players" comment was simply PR spin on Warnock's part, aimed at keeping Gibson and the squad happy. If he came out and said they're all crap, bar 5 or 6, he'd be saddled with an unhappy dressing room next season and a chairman not happy that fans would expect him to bring in a boatload more players. But you're right. Anyone who watched us play can see we're a lot further away from being promotion material th

  22. I wouldn't even put Howson on that list at the moment - he's been well below par lately, though I agree he's been a good servant for most of this season. I also don't think Morsy has shown enough yet to be anything more than a squad player, though there may be better to come. Spence is third-choice RB, and Coulson has never been allowed to do more than hint at his potential, whatever that might be. The fact that we don't have a single goalkeeper or striker worthy of note is hugely depressing. I honestly can't come up with nine or ten top players at the club, unless Warnock is including th

  23. Probably because he is on such a good contract that he won't see that anywhere else and he doesn't want to give that up, which is understandable. Teams loan him but simply can't afford or is willing to sign him permanently on those terms. Next year will be anothe rloan for him. Getting him here on a one-year loan deal would be decent if Chelsea pay a large part of his wages. Can't see it though. I think we will get Bolasie though. Struggle to see many top flight teams offering him a deal.

  24. Sounds like we need to promote to the U23 coach to the top job when Warnock leaves. I agree it does seem mad that Boro have a youth system that promotes one style of play, yet we seem to see-saw back and forth between styles with the senior team. I guess it makes sense that coaches like Warnock and Pulis would be reluctant to use academy players, as they clearly haven't been taught to play their preferred style.

  25. Correct, however Bolasie is on more and Warnock seems confident enough that we would strike a deal. Moses hasn’t played an awful lot of games the past few years and maybe would struggle to earn a deal at Premier League level. He also has a superb relationship with Neil. As I say, don’t know how concrete but it seems to ‘fit’

  26. don't know if he would be willing to drop to Championship (or accept lower wages) but have seen him on wing and as wing-back and full back, so would probably be a better option if Kebano goes back to Fulham but he seems to have become one of those "worldies" that have gone off the tracks somewhere along the line. Still on Chelseas books but has been farmed out so often that there has to be a reason that he has never established himself anywhere, though that might be why he is linked with us. Not sure about that one, but if he is anywhere near player of his early years, would be a good signing

  29. The under 23 just conceded in the 94th minute to bottle it 3-2 against Palace a draw would of been enough to guarantee a playoff space now they face Palace at home on the final match day knowing another loss will knock them out the playoffs. Connor Malley with both goals .

  30. Looking at it very forensically (and not counting subs), can we assume the top club has got eleven top players and the bottom club zero top players. If so, Boro should have six top players. Answers on a postcard please...to Mr W.

  31. Mr Warnock has said that we have 9 or 10 top players. If that is the case, why the hell are we in 10th place!? How many 'top players' have the 9 teams above us got!? Is it down to injuries? Bad refereeing decisions? Or just bad luck? Have Boro been massively on the wrong end of any of these factors? I suspect that over 46 games, all these factors even themselves out. So what is left? What other reason can there be for all these 'top players' performing at well below their abilities for us to be wallowing mid-table? There seems to be a person who therefore can't get these player

  32. Has Fry been sold yet? 😉 It is mad seeing how different Fry is viewed compared to last season through some people's eyes. Similar to Spence this season, if Spence stays and has a quality season next year people will forget the fact they ever wanted rid of him this time round. Obviously not saying I expect that level of improvement from Spence. I also didn't think Fry had a good season last year as much as I didn't want to sell him but comments like that are mad, mate. He was 22, was in a team that all round had a bad season and should never have been down there and you made comm

  33. I agree... when Big Jack was here, they stuck their knives into Souness, Brine, Craig Johnston, Dave Mills, Alan Moody then later on Kernaghan, Ripley and Hammy.. we have some who just can't find it in themselves to say that their whipping boys can do anything right.. but on the other hand, if they do take to people, they will let them go uncriticised for any error.. if we went through every goal we conceded in a season, I would put money on it that most of the errors were made by senior lads .. but then again, it is rare than you can put it down to a single player (like Paddy falling over

    • One big plus at least Scotland players don't have far to travel home, and up and down the pubs and bars in Scotland they'll be able to talk about the mighty nil nil with England for years to come.
    • Yes me too I was hoping for a last gasp equaliser, I'm hoping that the team are brilliant next game and prove me wrong, but I just feel the other teams have players who can produce that bit of individual brilliance needed, we look stifled and devoid of ideas to create chances. I had high hopes before the tournament started but the manager gives me no confidence, the most inform fullback we have in the squad is Chillwell good defender and fast going forward, the striker  with the best heading ability is Calvert Lewin outstanding season for Everton, neither have had a look in, narrow minded manager who has Plan A and nothing more this squad deserves much better.
    • Has he whinged about Villa, Liverpool and West Ham like? I'm pretty sure he's spoken about West Ham at least and had nothing but positive things to say about his time there. In comparison with Karanka, he had plenty of good to say about Big Sam too, if I remember rightly. And in his situation, would you feel aggrieved or would you sit there after over a decade's worth of combined service to a club and think "At least I got that chance"? It's a two way street and it always has been with Downing. When he's been here, he's always worked hard and at least earned the chance to justify us keeping him around. He's never downed tools like Braithwaite did, for example. The season Braithwaite signed, Downing was pushed into the under-23s by Monk, they tried to force him out the club and sell to Birmingham and he worked his way back into the team. That same player got demonised as if he was a catalyst for Karanka's departure, got booed by his own fans and still came back trying to fight for the cause. It doesn't matter if I'd been in my job for 1 year or 20, if I made agreements with someone to extend a contract and they then backed out when it suited them and left me in the lurch, I'd be pretty bloody annoyed about it. If he wants to talk about that, he has the right and players who are hung out to dry by clubs don't have any reason to shirk talking about it. Especially with the situation here, where he didn't just have a promise made to him, he made a decision to waive a contractual agreement previously made in part so he would have his future worked out. We got what we wanted in the short term and long term and Downing was forced to leave. How can anyone possibly look at that level of unprofessional behaviour by the club and still think Downing's the problem is completely beyond me. It just seems to be a long term hatchet job continued on from a time when everyone blamed Downing for Karanka nearly leaving the first time and actually leaving eventually. Mixed in with the fact people thought Downing wasn't a good player which for some reason created value judgements of him as a person. People already don't like him and see him in one way so aren't open to the idea that he's in the right. The comment above, "don't get me started" on him, I have to wonder where that comes from when everything Downing says matches up to the absolute shittery we see at the top level of our club every year and especially since Karanka and Orta left.
    • dont get me started on Downing.
    • @wilsoncgp agree with everything you said. Just seems to me that he loves to whinge about how each club dealt with him “unprofessionally” upon leaving them. I have no doubt Boro did probably mess him about in Pulis final yesr but he needs to weigh that off woth how much good our club has done for him over the years, especially the owner who he also slagged off in that Schwarzer interview In every interview I read of his he seems to give of the vibe of there being a sense of self-entitlement with him. Just my opinion and others might see him differently
