  1. I’ve said time and time again (although I don’t post much nowadays) that there is no point in splashing money on players unless the manager is capable of welding them into a successful team. Boro’s history of managers generally consists of appointing local heroes (Mowbray and Woodgate), players with pulling power but no managerial experience (Robson and Southgate), overrated wannabes (Monk), patch-up jobs (Venables), managers who could talk the talk but not walk the walk – until he walked (Strachan), and over-the-hill dinosaurs (Pulis and Warnock). The notable exceptions are McClaren and Karan

  2. Britt Assombalonga - £15m in 2017 Bielsa to Leeds - 2018 but I can’t find his salary for 2018. But he is on a lot for a manager now they’re in the prem at around £8m a year my point is that we seem to pay big for players when maybe paying big for a manager might benefit us better?

  3. Whether its a Wilder, Howe, Lampard or whoever may become available shortly (Hughton or even, Farke perhaps?) I'm guessing that already SG is working with Scott for a rehashed Plan B. The challenge for Lampard would be very similar to the Derby one except with a Chairman that is probably considered to be more realistic and with a better run Club (or so we think and hope). It would almost be the perfect Club for him to rebuild his managerial career with and also perhaps not get his head turned too quickly after his Chelsea stint. Howe doesn't seem to do the Northern parts of the UK an

  4. The bit in bold is the bit that really irritates me and something that triggers me no end. Since he’s been here he’s always played the ‘underdog’ card. The ‘we’ve got the world against us’ card. Why? We’ve got a very strong squad now and we did second half of last season. Top 6 squad imo. Yet he continues to play the negative, feel sorry for us attitude. Why not try and create a winning mentality throughout the club, from the players to the fans? Why not go into the game and play our own formation rather then changing it to match them up? Specifically when we are *** when we play 5 at th

  5. Scott’s ex boss Stuart Webber purposely targeted head coaches that had completed their coaching badges through the German FA as they’re supposedly the most thorough and the toughest to pass, so produce the highest quality coaches - certainly for the type of head coach that Webber wants. This worked well with unearthing David Wagner and Daniel Farke from Borussia Dortmund II so I would be very surprised if Scott didn’t follow his mentors successful approach. The requirements of our next head coach are going to be completely different to Warnock - and all previous managers too. Their role i

  7. If anyone thinks Gibson will sack Warnock in his final season in management, think again. He will be here for the full season, that I can guarantee you all. Gibson has shown that he waits too late to pull the trigger and realistically with nothing to play for, he won’t get rid of Warnock. I don’t see Warnock walking from a job in his final season either. This season already has vibes of just treading water and passing the time. It’s just all a bit meh at the moment. I think what makes it worse is the Warnock excuses. Look in the mirror Neil and reflect that we need a different

  8. Some fans hate criticism of the club they take it really personally. The forum would be pretty boring if we were all just cheerleading though wouldn't it. You're right we've been poor this season and Warnock's record this YEAR has been way under par despite having some decent players at his disposal. It isn't a snap judgement based on one defeat, he needs to start winning games.

  10. Would you say that the preconceived notions were correct or incorrect? The issue isn't what people thought beforehand, it's what we've done after appointing them. The football under the last three managers has been dreadful. If it was good football, and we were winning lots of games, whatever people thought beforehand wouldn't matter in the slightest. The only football that I can think of in my time as a Boro fan that has been worse or on the same level as the last few seasons was under Strachan.

  11. The modern game is much more technical, moving the ball quickly with pace. Gone are the days of launching balls up field or into the box for some giant muscle bond forward to head it home. I agree we have been stuck in the cold era while everyone else moved forward. The championship might be more physical but still technical football is proven to be more successful. I think Leeds would be a good example..

  12. I liked the Michael Reiziger links around the time of the Woodgate appointment, would still happily have someone like him here, even if inexperienced.

  13. All fair points, my take is that the plan is now with Scott and therein lies the continuity rather than with the management appointments going forwards. Like McClaren, Karanka did have some previous experience sitting next to their masters but Lampard is more experienced than say Robson was or indeed Rooney is at Derby who in fairness to him is far exceeding my expectations of what I thought he would achieve especially considering the state of the Club imploding around him, not that I'm advocating a move for Rooney.

  14. Sorry, I’m not against a young inexperienced manager totally, but I would like us to have some form of building blocks in place. Karanka was a rookie in terms of management, but had been an assistant so brought some experience along with him. Comparing him to Woodgate for example shows the difference of our approaches. Lampard is still class as an inexperienced manager because he’s only had Derby and Chelsea (around 3 seasons), where as Karanka had 5 years experience before he came to us (so not a complete novice). He coached the Spain u-21 squad and then was the Real Madrid assistan

  15. Whoever comes in next, I seriously bloody hope Scott is doing the choosing. Can't stomach another "club legend" or useless dinosaur from Gibson. And I'm not sure I agree with the 'might as well let Warnock finish the season' opinions. We're going to waste the loan signings (and the money spent on them) under him in another pointless mid table season. Siliki, Sporar, and Hernandez will be gone in the summer and we're back to square one in terms of recruitment.

  16. Eddie Howe, Frank Lampard... if wanting to stick with British born managers. I'm sure there's plenty of overseas ones who would jump at the chance too. We have a bloody good squad.

  17. The fact that our continuing disappointment is now just "the usual" says a lot. 6 games, 6 points. It's not good enough. Same record as Derby and that says something.

  18. I'm sure Tav could play centrally as long as we as a team tried to use the ball in any way other than just lumping it. Warnock, in the Gazette, is on about Howson being on his own in midfield because Crooks and Tav were pushed further up. The issue is that we go direct so often that we end up with a group of players at the back, a group of players up front and no bugger in midfield. We bypass it so much that our players are wasting their time staying in midfield, it's almost like a little kids game, there's no structure to it at times.

  19. I think what Sanddancer meant is that while things seemed good on the surface - the big name signings, the sustained run in the PL, the League Cup win and UEFA Cup adventures, not all was well behind the scenes. Like he said, once McLaren left for the England job, look how fast things went south. The rookie manager appointment, the cost-cutting and our rapid descent into the Championship...from which we've never really recovered. Despite having a few seasons' of parachute payments to try and sort things out. The gist of his post, (if I'm reading it right), is that with hindsight

  24. Our next big money signing has to be a manager. It’s as simple as that. Sometimes investing in a manager like Leeds did with Bielsa will improve your current squad with a different playing style.

  25. Whoever the replacement is, I hope he's young enough not to have any baggage to tarnish to his reputation or give anyone any preconceived notions about him, and has no previous ties to the club. The Karanka vein again. I know we tried that with Monk but little did we know about him being a dodgy ***. Pulis and Warnock already had a significant chunk against them from the get go, and Woodgate had plenty of people who were against him because of his local reputation.

  26. I can remember my school days when we lined up with 5 front, 3 mid and 2 backs. I used to play RW and IR.. latter years dropped back to RM and RB.. The Old leather balls when wet could knock a bull out cold. We took turns to dubbing balls and our boots and the dressing room stunk of horse liniment.

  29. I reckon Scott will have a list of potential managers already. He's been doing this for years. If we don't get at least 4 points - unlikely I know - from the next 2 games - team we need to be beating - I reckon Gibson's usual October trigger might get a run out. Warnock just seems to either think he is untouchable or is trying to get the sack. His comments about some players and his terrible formations and tactics are starting to really annoy me.

  30. A couple of very good points there. The only scenario I see Warnock going this season is if we're in the bottom 5-6 come Christmas. Which given our form so far isn't beyond the realms of possibility... But besides Gibson's (oft misplaced) loyalty and Warnock's stubbornness, I'd rather not rush a new manager in just to try and launch a late play-off push. Let Scott do his due diligence and find someone who can take the club forward for a few years at least.

  31. It’s pointless speculating on a new manager right now I think? It’s not happening any time soon. Reflecting on yesterday in the cold light of day I can see that there was mitigation for the manager in losing McNair, the poor performance of key players and a feeling that if we had taken the lead when we should have then it may well have been a whole different outcome. However lingering concerns in defaulting to Bamba to replace Paddy, Howson being a regular starter (I’m a fan of Johnny but feel his role now is solid back up player) and sticking with a system which has too many good players not

  33. Heaven forbid we get another Robson, McClaren or Karanka then. Looking at Norwich I doubt many of us would have looked at Alex Neil at the time or indeed Daniel Farke. I doubt many would have complained had we beaten WBA and brought in Valerian Ismael this summer yet his career history was low key to put it very mildly before coming to Barnsley. I'm not sure how experienced you think we can realistically attract or afford? Lampard was deemed good enough for a top Premiership side and at 43 is only two years younger than Valerian. Marco Silva is 44 despite seemingly having been around

  35. Congrats to Emma Raducanu - the new US Open champion. Did anyone else catch the final last night? I can't claim to be an avid tennis watcher...usually get my annual fix by watching Wimbledon. But that was some of the best tennis I've ever seen - either men's or women's. Some amazing rallies and outrageous winners. Raducanu is the first British female US winner since Virginia Wade. The youngest in around 30 years and the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam in history. Fair play to her opponent - Fernandez did not make it easy for her. It was a hard fought, back and fo

The whole performance stunk. It could be down to, too many new faces and we need to click but today was awful I’m going to erase it from memory and try to move on. 37. Over reactions?. Our record in 2021 is shocking (think it's 9 wins in 33), this season 1 win in 7, 1 away goal in 4 and the away performances bar Fulham have been absolutely abject in front of big travelling support. The quality of football, particularly away from home is Sunday league without the laughs. Not sure what the appropriate 'reaction' ought to be?...suck it and see? We're all more than entitled to our opinions and we'll all feel we're right - one of the reasons we all love the game I suppose. For me, I'd make a change ASAP, why wait 5/6 games.. 40. What an anti climax that was and only small glimpses of what we hope certain players will bring to the team. Coventry by far deserved winners and so many basic mistakes once again by us. Someone needs to tell Jones that there are others players on the pitch and that he should pass to team mates he had a mare today. Uche I feel should attempt to shoot straight away and not try and pass responsibility to someone else (start of the rushed shots against their keeper) Yes we hit the cross bar but we deserved nowt. Good to meet Trekkers and his daughter again and sorry Dave

  41. Just read NW comments in the Gazette which only reinforces my opinion he is deluded. Same excuses about decisions not going our way, the officials once again get the blame. Now I’m not saying a couple of games a season may come down to poor decisions but equally they also can be favourable so I’m not buying it. Heads down chins on the floor indicates they don’t want to play for him. Not one words about tactics, none. All good mangers will point to the time a game changed and how ,with most countering the play but NW simply doesn’t know.. I hope for the clubs sake things change rather qu

  43. Then there's this, also from the Gazette: “I’ve got to sort out how we’re going to start scoring goals," he admitted. “We never look like scoring from corner kicks. “You’d think we were Sunday League and never practised them, but we do it every day. “But we practice them every day. Maybe we’re practising too much and I need to start letting them do it off the cuff.” I'm assuming that he has been asked directly about set pieces because if not that tells you everything you need to know about his thoughts on football - we need to score more goals = we need to score from c

  44. Without getting into tactics and todays game, Warnock just needs to start winning games. Thats the top and bottom of it, at the moment he's performing on par with Wayne Rooney at Derby and it isn't good enough. I'd give him half a dozen games with the new players to start turning things around then I'd be looking to make a change. He doesn't provide entertaining football so he at least needs to deliver points and we're barely doing that at the moment. There's no excuses now, he's got the players to be doing better than this.

  46. Well, where do I start? Bar the triple save we gifted their keeper in the second half we were so so bad. Dijksteel couldn't look less interested if he tried, Tav tried but failed, and Hall made Samba look as though he was in his prime. I'm so disappointed by that performance it's uncanny. Why Warnock never replaced the players who were performing bad, really baffled me. Siliki looked okay when he came on, few poor first touches but at least look interested. Dael Fry got motm for me. Lumley is on par with Bettenelli, and Jones, although worked his *** off, needs to be

  47. Indeed. Round in circles, just a shame that one transfer window down, an international break to train in and we're still doing the same thing - playing a system that we don't have players for. I wouldn't want Bamba playing regularly by any means, but he wasn't the problem with the side today. Given he was dropped in at the last minute, he was alright.

  49. my late wife used to love it too, came across as a decent fella, no "look at me, aren't I great". Remember a few where they showed him failing challenges, so never sure of outcome. She was from California and said that a lot of restaurants used the challenges for publicity when starting out as competition so fierce that you had to be "different" in some way.
