  1. If the player we were being linked with wasn't called Ben Gibson, just another centre back who had two promotions under his belt, who had Premier League experience and was in his prime years, people would be miles more excited about signing him. I'd love to have Gibson back personally, but as Will says, it depends what the hit on our budget and wage bill would be.

  4. Wilder talks about needing leaders amongst other things, lets see how Gibson ticks the boxes: - Leader (on and off the pitch) - Left footed CB - 2 promotions from this league - knows what it takes - Scott involved with taking him to Norwich - Known quantity, little risk involved. You are bashing a quality player because he is from Boro and a former player. I'd like to think we've moved past the Hugill phase.

  5. Some people just live to be negative so they can say they told you so if they happen to be right. Everything points to us spending money this summer. - wilders talk of a rebuild and needing a lot of players. - acquizition of Scott - impending sale of Spence/possible other assets Saying the times of spending decent money on players is just plain wrong. We were the 3rd highest spenders in the championship last season with just over 10mil according to transfer market. Bournemouth spent 0.08mil more but got 25mil worth of sales too. We spent that much without selling any

  6. There was a very interesting piece in The Athletic detailing key stats on a wheel to demonstrate teams play-styles and qualities compared to the rest of the league: Each bar represents a 10 percentile step, Bournemouth are in the top 20% for all pressing metrics in red for example. Going round the pinwheel: our graph shows our possession stats (green) are good, specifically for field tilt (keeping the ball high up the pitch) and safety in moving the ball from our defensive 3rd into the opponents half. But we're about average in build up play which I'd say bear

  7. I get the impression that with Tav a few people set their stall out early and decided he wasn't good enough. They're then far too stubborn to admit they got it wrong.

  8. I'm confused by people who wouldn't welcome Gibson back. He's absolute quality in the championship. The defence under Karanka was arguably the best the division has seen in recent memory and he was a massive part of it. Not to mention he also brings that character/experience and leadership we can see the team sorely needs. On Darlow, I can't say I know much about him but all the barcodes I've asked say he'd be a very good number 1 in the championship. None were particularly negative about him šŸ¤·

  11. I don't think Fry gets bullied all that much quite honestly. It's something that get's said about the lad but if it was happening every week then we'd be nowhere near as defensively solid as we have been. I don't think we looked better when he wasn't in the team so unless Bamba was also getting bullied then I think we'd have to say there's more to defending than just liking a scrap. I do think he could do with adding some muscle though, his frame should support it, and it would give him extra strength to go up against the bigger strikers at this level, without losing too much in terms of mo

  13. https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/marcus-tavernier-trait-appreciated-middlesbrough-23997719 Nice opinion piece on Tav, but the bigger reason I'm posting it is because Tav apparently ran an absolutely titanic 16km in the United cup game. I think the highest distance covered I've seen in a single game before is around 13km, even the best in the PL in this metric average just over 10km per game. Probably a large part of why Wilder likes him so much, he is absolutely crucial to the system we play.

  14. regarding keepers, someone i think may be a decent shout is Matt Ryan. he looked good two seasons ago at brighton but struggled at arsenal . hes a solid reliable and experienced keeper, commanding and experienced. unfortunately the stumbling block would be wages. and hes australian which has worked before.

  15. Gyƶkeres Partnered by Pukki or Twine would do me very nicely. As an aside and it may be nothing, but a friend of mine lives in Bavaria and occasionally goes to watch a club called Greuther FĆ¼rth, who have just been relegated from the Bundesliga. He claims the word on the street there is that Boro have scouted a left wing back called Jetro Willems. On checking the ever reliable wikipedia, he was on loan at Newcastle in the past and scored against Liverpool and Man City while on loan. Like I say, all rumour and hearsay, but given Greuther FĆ¼rthā€˜s relegation, I can see him maybe wanting

  18. We signed payero for around a reported 5 million. Riley mcgree wasn't cheap. Balogun cost a decent fee for a loan and we did bid about 9 million for muniz who went to Fulham. We have money to spend and with the sale of Spence this is enhanced by 15 million

  19. Especially during the summer when there's less to chat about other than transfer related stuff. I don't think it harms the forum to have a few football threads not related to Boro. And most people on here probably do support in England in fairness, well except for the few strange foreign folk we have here that just aren't mature enough to recognise England's greatness.

  23. Yeah that would be an issue with him. He can't commit opposition players in the same way as McNair and Dijksteel can. I suspect if we're seriously interesting in signing him it would be for the central spot, knowing he can cover the left sided spot on occasion if he had to.

  24. I don't think there's many people who think Gibson is a bad player but there are questions there over fee, wages and suitability for this team that I think are worth asking. This is a very different team to the one he played in under Karanka.

  26. Highest single game in the PL last season was 12.7km, I doubt there's many players capable of sustaining their highest workrate of the season for a further 30 minutes, so I still think Tav's figure is pretty outstanding.

  32. He did, which is where the game in Holland comes in I guess, as I'd say a seriously bad refereeing decision cost us big time in that game. Not only would they have been down to ten men, Koeman scored the opening goal later on as well! I'm not one for blaming referees, and I don't generally do it at all, but that was as blatant a red card as you will ever see, and it's one case where it absolutely altered what happened during the rest of the game in my opinion. Holland only finished 2 points ahead of us in qualifying, and that was the second last game for both of us. Any other result and we

  33. This is a myth that I dispelled a week or two ago - he makes more passes than any other Norwich player, has the highest pass completion rate, loses the ball the least in their squad, has the least unsuccessful touches per game. He may not dribble with it very often but he is very comfortable with the ball at his feet for a centre back. I think he's perfect for the middle of the 3, so I'm unsure if we'll be in unless fry goes. But he's never been tested as a wilder type centre back either, so you never know, he might take to it. If he did, it would be extremely useful for us to have him as our

  34. The problem with stats are they can be misleading. They do not paint a clear, accurate picture. You can get a great pass completion by passing it around the back four and keeper, whilst getting nowhere fast, especially versus teams that sit in. You are not really comparing like for like systems, tactics, instructions given to players for me.

  35. For me it depends what he's being brought back to do. I have doubts about him playing as the LCB in Wilder's system, whilst he is a comfortable and accomplished passer of the ball and can bring it out of defence pretty well, I can't see him doing what McNair and Dijksteel have done this season. If he's being brought back to play as the middle of the 3 then I think it would be a great signing, and my only reservations would be on the cost and wages and what chunk of our summer budget he would take up.

  36. I really donā€™t understand the desire to have Gibson back personally. He is 29, so no sell on fee, he lacks pace, rarely scores at set pieces, often gets caught ball watching on set pieces, poor distribution, not a great ball carrier despite attempts to do so. If this were to happen, it would surely be Downing MKll, another Chairmans gift. Fairly sure Wilderā€™s system is not really suited to Ben, I think he operates better in a 4-2-3-1 system with midfield enforcers in front. I have posted a few negatives to illustrate why he is not a great choice in a Wilder system, not to sugges

  38. No wonder we looked so knackered toward the end of the season, forgot two of the games went to extra time and most of these players played 3 games in those weeks.

  39. I don't think we'd be selling Fry so we could buy Gibson, it would be if we got an offer we couldn't refuse for Fry and we'd still be looking at bringing in a LCB. Of course I'd prefer to keep Fry but wouldn't be unhappy if we could get 3 defenders in if we sold.

  42. Gibson coming back is inevitable. It's just a case of when. I'd rather leave it for now and sign someone cheaper as he'll cost a sizeable chunk of money. They signed him for Ā£8m last summer so we'd be looking at Ā£6m or so to bring him back. I don't think he suits Wilders system and style that much too. It's got to be a good deal, so something like Ā£3m/Ā£4m which won't happen. Leave it and sign him next summer. He'll be in the last year of his contract and we can get him on the cheap. Sign him in Summer 2023, he'll be 30 and we can get a solid 3-4 years out of him.

To be fair to our recruitment I think we have had a few good windows even tho they seem to get a lot of stick. Out of all the signings this year if say thereā€™s only Silvera that seems below par. but he has come from Auz so we may see a better player next year when heā€™s had a season behind him. Greenwood hasnā€™t been amazing but heā€™s young and could improve IF we sign him permanent Thomas hasnā€™t looked great but hasnā€™t had a pre season with us and a run of games so hard to judge. Gilbert hasnā€™t featured enough to judge him either. keepers both solid enough VDB looks class Rogers was good business LLath looks a good find Azaz improving OBrien showing signs after a run of games LBā€™s both seem more then good enough at this level. im confident that we will have a good summerĀ
