Michael Carrick is expected to sign a new deal at Middlesbrough and commit his future to the club after interest from the Premier League.
The former Manchester United midfielder, 42, has a year left on his current terms at the Riverside but it is understood there is an agreement in place for an extension having completed his first full season as Boro manager.
He guided Boro to the play-offs in 2022/23 having taken charge in October, succeeding Chris Wilder, then secured an eighth-place finish in the Championship this season and reached the EFL Cup semi-finals.
Premier League clubs and Championship promotion candidates have looked at Carrick as a coach with huge potential, with his other work at United where he was on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching staff and was caretaker manager for three games when the Norwegian was sacked.
But securing his future at Boro will be a huge boost to his club as they look to build on his work over the last 19 months and mount a promotion challenge next season, seven seasons after they were relegated from the Premier League.
Carrick’s first signing of the summer will be Luke Ayling, who has been on loan at Boro for the last six months. He was granted a short-term move to the Riverside in January from Leeds, with fans paying an emotional farewell to the 32-year-old.
With his contract at Leeds expiring, Ayling also had interest from Sheffield United as a free agent but has agreed a contract at Boro and will play there next season. It has been confirmed that Paddy McNair is to leave Boro after six years at the club, with his contract up this summer.
“After six years and 219 appearances, my time at Middlesbrough has come to an end,” McNair posted on Instagram. “Big thank you to all of the players, staff and the fans for the support throughout the years. Looking forward to the next chapter.”
Yeah so just to clear up. Was told Jones was rejoining (which looks to be true) and Glover leaving. Them two were said with the same ‘confidence’ if you like in terms of certainty. Dieng leaving was not said with the same certainty. More a feeling with a few people who work at the club and what’s been heard/said etc. around the place. Let’s see what happens.
I & all attendees for the Charltons Champions dinner received an email following the nights success, although sadly I didnt attend
On opening the email there were quite a good number of photos of fans from the VIP section, where we were tabled, having individual photos taken standing with the group of players
I scrooled through them to see if I knew anyone there when all of a sudden I seen Jim Platt holding up a signed Boro shirt with my name on the back & numbers 86-24, puzzled at the time, but once I got to work all was revealed, my shift mates had clubbed together to have the shirt placed on my table as a suprise, a gift from them to me for my retirement in July, lovely touch
86 the year I started at ICI North Tees
24 My final year at Seal Sands
38 plus continuous years
I don’t. As much as I would have liked to see Leeds get knocked out I’m not going to sit around feeling sorry for Norwich. Nearly a decade on and I still haven’t gotten over them doing us at Wembley.
The keeper info was pretty spot on with Jamie Jones extending the stay. Same poster said Dieng and Glover likely to go though haha. Can't remember who it was
It's not really odd. They often scrape articles by using comments from carricks pressers and interviews , he commented on him and others being back for pre season and this is them meeting quotas for news reports to place adverts on. They get about 10 articles out of every interview lol
There's nothing to report on the Hackney front as nothings happened and won't happen probs till everyone comes back from holiday, if he is even moving.
The thing is with the current transfer model we're working to, is that over time expenditure will increase, assuming of course that it works successfully.
But I'm not sure we're quite there yet, it's still really early days I think, with the current approach only beginning properly when Carrick arrived.
All things considered, I'm actually more relaxed and increasingly confident that we'll do some good business this summer, both in and out, for many years.
Absolutely agree sir. He was like a leaf in an Autumn storm, all over the place, he is nowhere near Matt Clarke’s current standard for one. The trouble is, he is Gibsons nephew and they say blood is thicker than Aaron Connolly, so we need to hope he doesn’t want to go back to the future, if he does, then I hope he is delivered by Evri as he will then be too broken from the journey.
Gazette, Echo and local Birmingham paper now reporting on the fact that part of add on was CL qualification which is now due.
It was 10m rising to rising to 16m and we also have a sell on %.
Not seen him play but he's still only 21 and could still improve and he's already playing regular for Aberdeen. They might be bottom half this season but they were in Europe this year and are usually around the top end of the league.
Van Dijk was still in Scotland at 24
city will know, if clubs with a sell on entitlement didn't get that information I'm sure you would hear about clubs getting caught keepnig the add ons, espieally with deals involving clubs abroad..
I'd imagine they are entitled to at least a redacted version of the transfer agreement where all the variable payments we and city are entitled to (if achieved) are disclosed to them.
if city was your club you would need to know, you can expect them to be in the dark when they are getting around 20% of these payments from the add ons and what ever sell on percentage we have too.
this is probably a reason also why we wont be able to agree to remove add ons from rogers deal like some people have mentioned (when hoping we will buy archer for less), as man city would have an issue with that and would have to agree to it for them to be removed from the deal.
i'd imagine the only way that happens is if we buy them out before they are achieved, and if they are likely to be achieved there isn't much incentive for them to give up on the payments unless immediate cash flow is an issue
otherwise its a easy way to cut the club who has the sell on clause out the deal when your buying a player from the club you sold them too after the deal if you could just cancel the add ons but let us have 3m off this player we are buying from you, clubs trying that are bound to catch some case with fifa or who ever gets involved when clubs have disputes over money to be paid over transfers.
Same. The scouting department & Kieran scott seem to have a good system for signing players. Carrick is a great coach and will help with developing our new signings.
My concern is Carrick will want success now and feel the club are not backing him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets annoyed if/when we sell our best player/players each summer. Hopefully he trusts the process.
Think it would depend on if anyone else is leaving. Someone suggested Lenihan didn't they? So we lose Lenihan, and bring in Gibson, a reasonable enough swap. I don't know where the Gibson stuff is coming from though cos we haven't been linked have we?
Didn't we just concede four goals at home against Leeds as well with your first choice pairing at the back? Gibson wasn't at fault for any of the Leeds goals tonight, the first two were on the goalkeeper, the second two he couldn't have stopped either way.
Can I implement a rule.
No one ever is allowed to use the words bring Back Ben Gibson again.
what an horrendous performance right now from him and Duffy.
talk about out of your depth.
I would be utterly shocked if we didn't have a champions league clause in there tbh. It was a position of strength for us to negotiate on - Villa would have significantly higher revenue should the qualify, meaning an increased budget, meaning we can use that in our favour to say "look you'll have more money and a higher budget, we want a part of that if you manage it" while they also have the security of if they fail and don't have that increased revenue, they're not paying out more.
It's the most win-win clause that we could have put in there.
Forgot to sort my transfer thread bingo card and there's already a few marked off.
@Borodanerecommended someone from Danish leagues,
Plane spotting, 'ITK' arguments, calls for Gibbo to be re-signed...
I reckon I'd have a full house by mid June
