I'll give Derby their due - I think they earned the victory we handed to them. Had it not been for a mistake, it could have still been a draw having held on in the way they tried and succeeded to do.
With the greatest of respect to Pompey though, we were better than them today. Mousinho saying they deservedly led at half time is one way of putting it, we surrendered our position in the game with an arguably worse mistake than last week's. I don't think they did much to deserve anything today besides a bit of endeavour for their first and that's despite actually seeming to come and try and press us into making mistakes. As last time out, it wasn't a hardcore press that caused a mistake though, it was just our inability to do what should have been a pretty simple action.
Today the frustration wasn't even that we couldn't regularly find the spaces to open them up - we were just bloody useless at taking advantage of it when we did. The game was wide open in the first half especially. I felt there was a goal in it for us throughout the game though, we just needed to find the right pass, make the right move or the right decision in the final third and we never did, we were consistently wasteful in and around their box. Burgzorg showed a lot of strength but was taking potshots from every angle. Azaz and Jones got in behind on multiple occasions but the pass was always timid and seemingly lacking in intent. Latte Lath's movement wasn't great again, either. He seemed a yard off the pace when there was a ball to be attacked in and around the area.
In the end, Jones once again saved us by causing havoc behind enemy lines and winning us a spot kick. And fair play to Conway, he made an impact coming on and the penalty was as cool as they come. In terms of controlling the game, I think we were better than last week but I also think Pompey were a little all over the place in their press and we took advantage of that in the first two-thirds of our attack.
