Well that defensive performance from Giles should hopefully jog a few memories and remind people he isn’t this Roberto Carlos/Maldini hybrid. It wasn’t even him going up against Doak, it was the ball watching and being caught out against Jones that was the stark reminder for me. I’d much prefer it if Boro went after someone like Bali Mumba from Plymouth. I really hope the fanbase move on from him now. Hopefully certain people can “close the book” on Burstow too. He was easily the worst player on the pitch last night 😂8 points

I thought Engel did really well especially after being almost knocked out cold by Glover, at that point I feared here we go again, the curse of the Left Backs but he grew into the game and done really well. I don't know what Dijksteel is having for lunch and dinner but long may it continue, he's looking more composed and a real beast than ever before, without a doubt my MOM.6 points

Valid thoughts but the adage about form being temporary may be applicable so no reason to believe that he may not pull through as with Hackney. Isaiah has one big advantage over Doak in that we have zero chance of signing the latter and there will be a place for him when Ben goes. Meanwhile, let's just enjoy what we have and get three points from Cardiff.5 points

I am very pleased with that result. Boro deserved to win and pressed Hull all second half. A clean sheet and a last second winner what's not to like.5 points

West ham have bid for ferguson apparently. Could be a key factor in whether ell stays4 points

Last season Jones got 8 goals and 4 assists in 35 games. Doak has 2 goals and 5 assists in 20 games. Jones is much more effective defensively and has begun to curb his tendency to draw daft cautions ... Doak hasn't so despite our perceptions, they are not that far apart. We all see things differently but I think we can agree that between the two of them, they can keep our opponents in a position for our other forwards to exploit openings. The willingness of both (and Delano) to run at people does make a difference so rather than put down a lad that does have a fragile side, give him the credit that is rightfully his. He might not be Messi but on his day he is very good to watch and I would love to see one game where both were on the pitch for an hour just to see if it could work. ... UTB4 points

Finn Azaz has been the best player in the league this season. Surely it's entirely understandable that Gilbert hasn't seen much game time? Not to mention his injury problems.4 points

There are a fair few of us who have wanted to see Gilbert on the pitch I now volunteer to be Chair of the Alex Gilbert appreciation society4 points

I understand where both sides are coming from and one of the good things about this forum is that people can express their opinions without being hounded off. Robust discussions are part of life and whilst some are "gloomier" than others, that's their right. I think that he just gets frustrated when only one side of the picture is painted so to speak. We all want the team to do well, even George (Happy New Year, marra), so let's draw a line and move on. If PG can be happy about the result then life is still good and we can still do enough to keep things interesting 🙂4 points

Well well well. Not one I'll watch back in a hurry but we really needed the 3 points, so fair play to keep going right to the end. Really happy for Gilbert, I was hoping he'd get more opportunities this year and it sounds like the injury he picked up has limited that a bit, but he's taken his chance and fair play to him because we need a squad full of players who can contribute. Not much for Glover to do today but happy that we've gotten a clean sheet there. I think the last two performances from Dael Fry have been terrific as well. Dijksteel was solid again, and I'm glad Engel got minutes and a decent performance under his belt. Hayden Hackney doesn't look the same player without Aiden Morris for me. I'll be over the moon when he's available again. I thought Jones did pretty well and it was exactly what we want to see more of from Burgzorg in the assist. Loved it. Not every win will be beautiful, but I don't care today.4 points

Surprised Engel hasn't had much mention on here. I thought he did well all game, stretching the play, running at pace and putting some wicked balls into the box. Apart from making an absolute Horlicks of a corner, he looked composed and confident. In fact, he looked better than Giles when the latter came on, and I say that as a huge fan of Ryan from his time here. I'd be happy for Engel and Borges to swap over between and during games if both can stay fit, and hopefully that will eliminate the need to recruit yet another LB in the window.4 points

I bloody love Gilbert... He seems like one of those players who tends to get himself in the right places, and also has a stroke of luck to him. He's taken many of the chances he's been given in the side. He deserves more minutes for me.4 points

Boro vs Cardiff The Riverside Stadium, 3pm on Saturday 4th January 2025 Game 2 already and my second consecutive MDT, well done me. We're back at home for this one, and it's back to 3pm on a Saturday afternoon, which is the right and proper time to kick off a game of footy. And it's against yet another team at the bottom which we should be beating comfortably. I really like Cardiff (the place) - I run a marketing agency in London and my mate runs one in Cardiff so I regularly nip up (and across) to see him. Lovely place to go out for dinner and a few drinks, very lively, 4/5 would def recommend. No sad stories about sitting drinking a pint on my own... Actually... ...there is a pub in Cardiff called The Borough, and it was there on the 29th February 2004 that I sat drinking a pint with my mate Nigel post beating Bolton 2-1 in the cup final. It was a weird atmosphere - not loud, but with a hum of disbelief in the air, nobody speaking but seeming to be thinking 'i can't believe we've actually gone and won something'. I think it was when Schwarz let that goal in to make it 1-2 and we had to sit through the rest of the game biting our nails and any other body parts we could find to chew. Typical boro. I digress... We won at Hull. Yay! It was a crap game but we did more than enough to win and it could have been 2 or 3 nil. As it was, Gilbert knocking one in the last minute of injury time was super sweet. How many times have we been there, thinking that we'd dropped another 2 points but we stole victory away from the pit of a boring 0-0 draw. And another clean sheet. Who'd have thunk it? Maybe we need Glover in goal for the rest of the season. He could be the new Dimi. Defensively we looked good again. Nice to see Rav and Fry playing together (I think having Fry back has been great for us btw). Meanwhile Djik continues to look like a man reborn, and we finally have Engel back too. Pleased that Jones started and thought he did well all being said. Moment of the game though was Johnny leading the singalong in the away end. We really need him back. And Morris. Then Hayden can have a bit of a break which he desperately needs. And we're now up to 5th. Surely this game is a banker home win and we can continue to progress and cement our place in the POs Form guide Boro: WDDDW, Cardiff: DLLWD We're unbeaten in the last five. We've only lost 3 games out of the last 15 did you know (Cov, Blackburn, Leeds), so we're much more consistent and better than many folk would make us out to be. Cardiff are unbeaten in the last two games drawing with Cov last time out and beating Watford just before that (which we must thank thank them for immensely). They seem to do well against the better teams. Eeek. View from the other side https://www.cardiffcityforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=242650&sid=498db7254b829f2b0826e59d5604a1dc Their top scorer Callum Robinson (8 goals) is suspended. Looking at FBref doesn't seem to be many goals elsewhere Played for both sides Sol Bamba, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Andy Campbell, Andrew Taylor, Aden Flint, Uche, Callum Chambers, Dimi, Cameron Jerome, Ross Turnbull, Gary O'Neil, Chris Riggott, Neil Cox, Andy Dibble, Gary Gill, Paul Sugrue, Jim Platt. Am sure @Erimus74 can think of many more. Questions 1. Who starts? Give us your lineup 2. Final score? 3. Were you at the 2004 cup final? What were your memories of that day? Did you have a pint in The Borough? 4. Who should we loan out in January? Silvera, Hamilton? 5. Who will we bring in in January? Are we still going after Giles? 6. How did you celebrate New Year?3 points

No, I don't want Giles at all. We don't have someone like Akpom making the runs to get on his crosses, we don't play that system leveraging his qualities - and couldn't (see absence of Akpom) - and just look at his defending. If you think we need to be stronger in defence (we all do) Giles isn't congruent with that. Just watch um V us and see if he got a tackle in at any point. He put a decent dead ball cross in for them and hit the first man a couple of times. I do believe however that sections of the Boro fan base will not stop the giles fantasising till he pops his clogs. But it's a big no from me.3 points

I hope Jones stays. I think the time on the he bench has benefitted him and he has shown enough to be a starting option. I hope the faith we showed in him during his tough spells would be enough motivation for him to bust his chops for us. Did anyone else think LL looked nothing like a 20m forward V hull? He ignored balls across the yard box, bad touches/passes and decisions, and Gilbert gets our goal by running past Manu to take the opportunity from the front post. I know he can be absolutely frightening at this level but I'm not sure many pl teams will have looked at him V lowly Hull and thought he can do a job for us against much stronger defences. Maybe it's a plot with him and hackney to keep them in January! Although credit to them both they never go hiding even when not on form.3 points

Ref for Saturday is once again Tom Nield, who we last saw against Preston, where unusually he showed five yellow but none of them we against us, four for fouls and one against the goalie for timewasting (in the 74th minute). Averages the usual four a game but the odd seven and eight suggest he can lose it, so hopefully he keep his composure. He has not given a penalty in the last three months, so no expectations of a break in that area. Fingers crossed it is one of his good games 🙂3 points
-
I am still baffled that we weren't given a penalty for that blatant shove on Jones tbh, the handball is one where I don't think he meant it and I don't think it prevented a goal, so it doesn't bother me, but it was a full on and deliberate shove with no attempt to get the ball. One of the few moments to talk about in that first half. Thankfully we got the right result in the end anyway.3 points

I'm simply giving credit where credit is due. Let's see more clean sheets and late winners. The essence of a good team.3 points
-
The pressure really ratcheted up when we made those 3 subs - Burgzorg, Doak and Borges - I don't know how much of it was down to improved quality and how much of it was fresh legs vs tired legs, but as soon as they came on we went from merely being the better team to barely leaving their half. But I think that speaks to how well the squad is constructed that we're in an injury crisis but can still bring on game changers.3 points

Can we all leave LinoJo alone now it is his opinion which has rightly been addressed but it gets uncomfortable having to watch a poster trying to defend themselves constantly. Good game Boro and jolly well done3 points

I know it was late again, but the fact that Carrick took azaz off for Gilbert when we needed a goal gives me hope that he does indeed see something in him. To replace the player with most goal contributions this season is a bit of a vote of confidence, despite the limited time.3 points

Great way to win a game, not good for the stress levels but that relief is sublime. Anf & Fry both had good games for me.3 points

Pretty ridiculous how they handle things on FMTTM tbh. They have an ageing core userbase, majority of new members are "new members" from RR, so they are just gradually driving people away. They don't tell people why they have done it, either. Expecting people to contact them to possibly be told why banned is frankly bizarre behaviour.2 points

All this talk about Giles why hasn't George McCormick been given a run out, that's the thing with these youngsters they need to be put in the team to see if they can step up. Look what happened to Hackney??2 points

If we’re going for a midfielder I’d love Mads Emil Madsen although it would be huge blow for my local team. Nicknamed Messi Mil Madsen he is very similar to Hackney albeit a bit more dangerous in the box. Think his style would suit the way we play and the Championship in general. Massive engine and never stops running and won’t shy out of a tackle.2 points

I do hope we keep Jones after the windiw, hes so valuable to the way we play2 points

Probably " have written" but you speak better English than most of us so just give it your best guess and we will only laugh if it is rude 🙂2 points

Really isa strange one with Gilbert. Seems the fan base ( almost universal) can see the value that he offers. Arguably our trickiest player in and around the box. Certainly is a very deserving case for more game time.2 points

Sell or loan back out, it's surely not going to do him any good having him stay at a club where the fans were booing his every touch and chanting "send him back" at him.2 points

We should be looking to sell Silvera if there is any takers.2 points

He doesn't count towards squad numbers due to his age2 points

Fair comment, though I'm still not sure if its the players or the management / coaches. Likely a bit of both. It is frustrating that we don't play more like we did in the second half and have too many games where we are more like the first half. At our best, Boro definitely are one of the best teams in the league. Its just the inconsistency thats costing us. I wish I knew why we blow hot and cold so much. I bet Carrick does as well!2 points

I would like to think so. We had a run of 4 games and in those 4 we conceded 3 goals on 3 occasions. That’s impossible to maintain and go for promotion.2 points

On another note, I dont think the pitch helped yesterday. Not us anyway. We want to play football, must be tricky on that field of rubble....2 points

Bringing Gilbert on for Azaz was a nice advert for the strength of our squad. I also can't remember the last time we rescued a win from a poor performance like that, so i'm pretty pleased. When was the last time we picked up a win like that? Credit to Burgzorg for the assist. He's not my kind of player but he did well with his assist.2 points

I think that goal from Gilbert last night could be a season saver for us. We really needed to win that game. Another win against Cardiff is vital to gain some momentum and confidence. I’m over on Saturday so hope to see a good performance and 3 points in the bag. Just for Ray, I can’t see us keeping 3 clean sheets in a row so will go with 3-1 to the Boro 😆2 points

Was the same when he came on the reverse fixture as well. Doak went past him as if he was a hologram.2 points

Some people almost cum in their pants watching them defending against us... That's almost love.. 😜 On that note, how did people like our defending today? Hull had 0,31 in xG and 0 shot on goal..... Carrick defensive masterclass... 😜2 points

Edmundson ain't going no where he played a game for Ipswich in the prem, well a couple of minutes to be precise. Means he can't play for another club this season.2 points

Or just maybe I'm calling out all the virtuous uber fans abusing other fans with emotive immature drivel. Interesting that you have taken the time to research that I'm 100% negative 100% of the time, you must have taken all of 3 minutes to do that and missed me posting about Burgzorg's cross and Gilbert's finish but crack on.2 points

Yeah same. I didn't even mention it at the time till I seen some more replays at half time. Give the ref a pass on it but it was 100% a pen.1 point

Not sure many on here actually love Burnley. Especially if we had to watch them week in, week out. Speaking just for myself its more a respect that they've found a way to win the majority of their games. Based on seeing them play against us, they certainly look a solid team, but not the most exciting. They're a throwback to Arsenal under George Graham, when "One - Nil to the Arsenal" was a familiar chant.1 point

That's not what you said though, is it? The tactics make us weak that's why Engel didn't last and even a decent experienced defender in Borges has been largely written off. They're all destined to fail -

You mentioned one game mate that's all I was referencing. But the fact that things have happened multiple times might then come back to the quality of the players we have.
