  1. Keep Carrick. Some of the football we have played under him - especially last season - was mesmerising, so it's clear he has the ability to coach and get a team playing well.

I would, however, give him exactly what he asks for in terms of backroom staff. I still find it criminal how we said no to Phelan and Meulesteen coming in with Carrick and gladly accepted Woodgate and a vastly inexperienced Grant Leadbitter as our coaching team.

I think we will get through this season fine, and firmly believe an improvement in form will coincide exactly with Jones' return. Then it is imperative that a thorough evaluation of the season is held by the grown ups.

  2. If we have seriously agreed:

    * Villa to pay City their sell-on fee

    * Minimum £10m upfront

    * £5m of add-ons

    * Hefty sell-on clause of our own

That is simply astonishing business for a £1m signing from Scott et al. 👏👏👏

  3. Can't say I expected that to be honest. Nor do I think his performances so far have warranted such a bid. Reckon it's a mix of a data-driven signing and a young English player.

He seems to love playing here but we cannot begrudge him being excited and interested.

Luckily for us, we can kind of name our price. This is the model as crappy as it is.

  4. Absolutely not against Langstaff for the right price.

Watching the video, have to caveat that it is non league games but his movement looks great and thrives on creativity from behind him.

Luckily for us, we have Azaz and Rogers...

  5. I watch a lot of Argyle home games and you're right with this. It's quite a flexible style of play where roles and "in-game moments" are preferred to positions.

They definitely spend a lot of time with 3 at the back.

On the Azaz front, Plymouth seem to usually line up 4-3-3 attacking with Azaz playing as a #8

Personally, I've long felt that we have players who better fit a 4-3-3 than 4-2-3-1 but I'm not sure Carrick agrees with me. There is a risk that, like Crooks, he struggles if he is asked to start higher up the pitch. A lot of his highlight reels show him driving from quite deep.

Under Carrick we play with two #10s: one wide left who cuts in centrally when attacking but covers the left when defending and one wide right who attacks on the right but cuts in centrally when defending.

Looking at the rest of the season.

January [brackets mean returning from injury so not fully fit]

    Jones / Forss / Silvera

    Rogers / [Crooks]

    Azaz / Greenwood / McGree

    Feb- Easter

    Jones / Forss / Silvera

    Rogers / Greenwood / Crooks

    Azaz /  McGree

    After Easter

    Jones / [Forss?] / Silvera

    Rogers / Greenwood / Crooks

    Azaz /  McGree

Obviously there are likely to be other injuries and so on. I have put Azaz in over McGree because Carrick doesn't seem to rate McGree. He was quick to drop McGree the second Ramsey was able to start and, again, at the start of the season he was playing Silvera instead of him. Maybe due to his foot issues.

That must just be on paper. Argyle regularly played 3-4-2-1 under Schuey. Azaz would operate in one of the #10's

Crooks may be much maligned but he is so important to us

Not just on the pitch with a knack of scoring important and late goals, but his influence behind the scenes, in the dressing room.

Also I think the bloke is hilarious and humble. I'm sure people love going into work knowing he's around.

    What a guy.

This. And the fact he looks exactly like that stand up comedian who sings everything in auto tune...

Good post but there is no counting for Crooks and Greenwood having bad games or not involved games because Greenwood was viweing the game from the pitch

Completely agree. There has to be personal accountability from the players. It almost seemed that it was our game plan to slow the game down, take our time on the ball and draw the time out, knowing we were completely stretched.

Unfortunately for us, it seems Ipswich anticipated that and their relentless group press completely scuppered that. We should've changed but I don't think we were able to with the players available to us.

Ipswich are a good well organised side but even with our injuries I think this defeat is down to the coaching staff and the tactics today. Perhaps we should all just accept that this is a season of transition and bedding down and move on, this side is not good enough for the play offs

I thought Ipswich were really good out of possession which forced a lot of errors from our part, but there were also so many inexcusable unforced errors from us. Passes short, passes going in-between 2 players so both leave it, touches going out of play, far too slow with the ball, players running into each other. Just looked like we'd never played with each other before.

Ipswich played ok, not amazing but effective with and without the ball. Some of their quick play between the lines and third man runs reminded me of us for most of last season and left me scratching my head why have we changed that. A lot have been made about the similarities between Carrick and McKenna but Carrick completely had his pants pulled down tactically today.

I also take and accept your point about being a transitional season. I was also content with this at the start of the season, but it can only be considered a transitional season if the players we bought in develop and get better during the process. I have seen not a lot to convince me that they have over this season so far. Silvera, Bangura, Rogers just not good enough for us. Rogers has flashes, but not consistent enough.

I love Carrick; I hope we nail him down to a long term contract, but we have to bolster his coaching team in my eyes. Woodgate and Dank just aren't good enough on their own.

  11. I think we are slightly spoiled as Boro fans which puts us at a disadvantage in that we had arguably the best South American player to have played in England for us, which has put our expectations through the roof when we are either linked, or sign other South Americans.

Harsh on Payero to be forced up onto that pedestal but it wasn't to be. Some will work and some won't. I hope it works out for him in Italy and he does well at Udinese and will probably see him at Watford in the near future.

Wonder if we're getting a fee for him.

  12. An absolute dream move that Chuba would have never dreamt possible 12 months ago. I can't wait to see him continue to bang goals in on as many dodgy streams of Ajax's games as I can find.

But as someone said before, at least we're seeing photos of him in the #10 of Ajax, and not Luton or Sheff Utd. Don't think I could handle that; like your missus leaving you for the local toothless drug dealer...
