I'd say the former scenario is more likely, but Boro do have a weird habit of going against expectations, so the latter is certainly possible! Though if I were a betting person I wouldn't put money on a Boro win...

Agreed. As I said in another thread, Boro are a team that can play good attacking football...at times. Yes, we score goals, but we crumble under pressure too easily and revert to headless chicken mode, making very basic mistakes and gifting goals to the opposition. Plus some opposition managers have found ways to negate our tactics and can make us look completely ineffectual. While scoring goals is obviously very important, you need much more than that to be a successful team. You need to be able to defend, for starters. You need good organisation & communication through the team and you need mental resilience when under pressure and to bounce back from mistakes. Also helps to have a little tactical flexibility and be able to change things if Plan A isn't working.

I do sometimes wonder if we get results in spite of Carrick's coaching, or because of it. đ¤

Sometimes I imagine Rockliffe Park must be like the Normandy beaches scenes in Saving Private Ryan, with the coaches screaming, "MEDIC!" every time a player goes down injured. âšī¸

Sadly I see very much the same thing happening...only we'll concede an embarrassing third, later on, due to a trademark defensive cock-up.

Interesting thought. In theory it should be a perfectly workable set-up, provided everyone knows their roles and can work sensibly together and resolve their differences. Though if everyone truly does have equal seniority, I can see there could be some butting of heads and factions / cliques developing. Or it could be they're just not very good, or simply not suited to the roles they've been given...more square pegs in round holes. Personally I lean more towards this idea. Whether an assistant manager would help in this situation I'm not sure. If nothing else they might be able to bang some heads together and tell them to get on with it. I could be wrong but Carrick doesn't seem to be the type of person to do that.

3-1 Sheffield. This is gonna be messy. Agree with DS that this definitely won't be for the faint-hearted. Historically Bramall Lane has not been a good hunting ground for Boro. Our last 10 trips there, stretching back to February 1993 don't make for much better reading. OVERALL: W44 D23 L45 AWAY: W14 D11 L31 Last 10 (A): W2 D1 L7 (9th February 1993) If anyone is looking for some straws to clutch, Boro have emerged victorious in their last 2 meetings...a 1-3 away win in 2023 and a 1-0 home win in the reverse fixture this season. But given Sheffield's form has generally been far more consistent and they will be on home turf, I really can't see Boro getting anything from this. I can see us maybe nicking a goal against the run of play, or just catching them cold early on, but given the horrendous state of our defence, if the hosts are on anything close to their best form, we will have a torrid time. Boro have scored 9 times in their last 10 visits to Bramall Lane, but conceded 16. Reckon the gap will be a bit wider after Wednesday. Fully expect us to concede a minimum of 3 goals.

"On Monday evening, Carrick told me it was up to his players to write their own story". Not sure I like the sound of that. If its up to the players, why have a manager or coaches? While the manager usually cops the blame for players' failings, I usually like to make it a 50/50 split. In any case, if Boro fail to secure a top 6 finish, questions surely have to be asked about the coaching...or lack of it...as much as individual player errors?

Yep. Doesn't help that in this transfer window we strengthened where we already have options, but neglected the areas where we could really do with some more bodies. Dunno if that was by design or because we just couldn't get any defensive mids or defenders in (not counting Giles since he's basically a winger / wide player who just happens to play at LB). But it seems the die is cast for the rest of the season and we're going to continue to rely on being able to outscore the opposition. We'll have some good games I'm sure, but some awful ones too.

It would be nice if we had some idea...but its way too early for any official statements. For all the disappointments, this season hasn't been a disaster...we're at least at the right end of the table. Depends on how committed everyone is to the Master Plan and what shape the club's finances are in. Also depends on how big a priority promotion is. Obviously as fans we all want this, but perhaps they're a more patient lot in the board room? A change of manager would also (hopefully) mean a change of back room staff and some significant tinkering to our style of play. Taking a few backward steps before moving forward again. Just speaking for myself, I think they'd be prepared to give Carrick another half season and if it looks like scraping a play-off place is the best we can hope for (again), then I reckon Scott will be given the nod to start talking to any potential replacements.

If that happens I guess we just need to recruit Beavis as an assistant?

Reporter probably got their notes mixed up. More likely Woody was a Cub Scout in Liverpool! đ

Thats certainly been the case in a lot of games. We have been very passive, happy to pass the ball around and wait for an opening (which never usually comes). Thinking of the bore-fests where we've had 1 or 2 shots on target all game here. But some games - the Sunderland one being a good example, we were quite energetic and aggressive. Getting at them and working hard to win the ball back. Trouble is, as soon as we make a mistake - especially it if leads to a goal, its like someone flicks a switch and we get all nervous and passive. It can take us a long time to get our heads back in the game. We are just not very good at dealing with adversity, it seems.

How many Points can we get in our remaining games?

Based on current form: Sheffield Utd Away - 0 Watford Home - 3 Bristol Away - 1 Stoke Away - 0 Derby Home - 3 Swansea Away - 3 QPR Home - 3 Luton Away - 1 Oxford Home - 3 Blackburn Away - 0 Leeds Home - 0 Millwall Away - 1 Plymouth Home - 3 Wednesday Away - 0 Norwich Home - 1 Coventry Away - 0 Total: - 22 Which would put us on 66 points for the season...well short of the play-offs. Derby to Oxford looks like being a bit of a purple patch for us, but given how inconsistent we've been all season, I reckon that will be our best unbeaten run.
