Would he really be on that much though? Can’t see Preston having a higher wage budget than us and even if he wants a pay rise he will probably be well under our apparent £20k per week budget.

Sorry I was generalising on the calibre of player Browne fits into. For what it's worth I don't think he'll command a ridiculous wage. But usually championship ready players are naturally more costly wages and fees wise.

I think players like Browne are what we’re lacking and what we needed more of last summer. Tried and tested, know what ur getting and no ‘bedding in’ needed. Every team at this level needs a handful of proper ‘championship’ type players.

I agree...the big downside of those types of players tends to be the financial impact...in the case of Browne it won't be a fee but more the wages he may command. I think that's why last summer we appeared to bring in a lot of project type signings as we needed depth in the squad.

Personally I think we will go down a more targeted approach this summer. Carrick has already said himself quality over quantity. On the face of it, it looks like we might have a high turnover of players, but realistically most leaving are either injury cover (Ayling/Thomas) or fringe players (Dijksteel/Gilbert).

I watched that Leonard and I think we’d need to be certain he’s better than Barlaser before we made a move to get him, he looks very similar in how he plays.

I think that's the risk really, Barlaser was very good statistically for Rotherham but it hasn't quite worked for him here. Leonard in my opinion has a little more to his game in terms of the defensive side, but that might be more to do with how Northampton tend to play.

    1. Omari Hutchinson - Chelsea (Loan)

    2. Chris Willock - QPR

    5. Dembele - Blackpool

    13. Femi Azeez - Reading

Anyone of these 4 I'd be onboard with.

Hutchinson and Willock would definitely Championship tested/ready.

The 2nd two would be more thinking of expecting some growth over a season or two.

Azeez does tend to play on the right hand side a lot of the time...so with Jones and Forss there already there may not be room for another right sided attacker.

    3. Alan Browne (Preston out of contract)

Would love Browne, think he's been a very solid Championship player over a few seasons now. I'd get a Leadbitter vibe if we signed him.

I've mentioned Sheaf at Coventry before as I think he's a very classy operator in midfield, but not sure Coventry would want to sell.

    2. James Bree

If we can do a deal with Southampton for James Bree, I'd definitely take a chance. He was very good for Luton past 2 seasons. No clue what type of fee we'd need however. Southampton signed him for allegedly under £1m, but the lowish fee was due to his Luton contract expiring.

I'm sick as a dog so spent some time watching League 1 footage last night... I know I'll get the "NoT tHe LoWeR lEaGuE!" brigade for this, but as highlighted by recent posts there's some real talent in there at the moment. Obviously not players to build a side around, but signing 2-3 who can push for a place could be a shrewd move and profitable in the long term.

Marc Leonard is having an amazing loan at Northampton from Brighton. 5 goals and 6 assists from Midfield, and having just turned 22 you'd imagine he'd jump at the chance to join Boro in the summer. A few Championship clubs already sniffing. There's also a very tidy young DM/Anchor Man at Wycombe - Freddie Potts. Only 20, but could fight for the Howson role. He's high in the L1 stats for interceptions, which gives you an indication of the kind of player he is and how well he reads the game.

Anyway, to ignite some discussion, here's two players for every position who look like they could make the step up (some play multiple positions, and some are on loan):

    GK
    Lukas Jensen (Lincoln)
    Sam Tickle (Wigan)

    LB
    Harrison Burrows (Peterborough)
    Jack Sparkes (Portsmouth)

    CB
    Eiran Cashin (Derby)
    Tristan Crama (Bristol R/Brentford)

    RB
    Jadel Katongo (Peterborough/Man City)
    Fin Stevens (Oxford/Brentford)

    DM
    Hector Kyprianou (Peterborough)
    Freddie Potts (Wycombe/West Ham)

    CM
    Marc Leonard (Northampton/Brighton)
    Paris Maghoma (Bolton/Brentford)

    RW
    Kwame Poku (Peterborough)
    Stanley Mills (Oxford/Everton)

    AM
    Karamoko Dembele (Blackpool/Brest)
    Femi Azeez (Reading)

    LW
    Abu Kamara (Portsmouth/Norwich)
    Thelo Aasgaard (Wigan)

    ST
    Shaqai Forde (Leyton Orient/Watford)
    Ruel Sotiriou (Leyton Orient)

Seen Leonard a few times at the Cobblers this season (Google his goal at home vs Burton).

He's definitely the gem of their team. I was very surprised they managed to loan him again after last season and a huge part of their January window was him not being recalled.

One name not on your list from Peterborough is Ronnie Edwards. He plays centre back but in my opinion he'd be an absolutely perfect fit to our style of playing out from the back. He's only 20 so imagine Peterborough will want a sizable fee.

I'd also be really keen for us to see if Celtic would sell Micheal Johnston (on loan at WBA currently). Think he'd be an excellent option for one of the spots behind the striker.

I worked quiet shifts in a Real Ale pub until last year... got to watch a lot of football highlights and analysis 😅

One of my first jobs was a barman in an empty hotel...Sunday afternoon's were bliss. Barely any guests and sky sports viewable from the bar! 😍

After this we were around the FFP limit. accounts won't be released until December this year, we'll have the Tavernier & Spence sales in there but then still had a high wage bill due to loans.

The good thing with both sales at least is they'll practically be recorded entirely as profit for FFP purposes.

  10. Just for context our pre-tax losses for year ending 2021 and 2022 combined was just under £50m.

As much as we want to be able to sign 11 players that are proven quality, we simply can't afford to. We've spend good money (for where we are) on Engels and Latte Lath if the rumoured figures are correct. People will point to say we've sold Akpom, but realistically we'd be lucky to see half reinvested purely due to the costs of the club.

Personally I think the signings (if Bangura is the last), on paper are probably not Top 6. But there are a few players we have signed that I have faith might develop into really good players for us, in the medium/longer term. And a few we all literally have no real idea about how good they will be in the short term too.

If this method of recruiting helps break our cycle of boom or bust and gets us on the route to becoming a self-sustaining club, with an emphasis on developing players and building a real pathway from Academy to first team, then I'm all for it.

Championship clubs can now sign up to 4 overseas players without them having to qualify via the visa points system.

It's made it a lot less restrictive when it comes to signing players from abroad.

That's going to be very useful for Championship clubs. Opens the overseas market right up again.

  12. Latte Lath from the video MFC put up reminds me a lot of Archer in terms of play style and his build. Really hoping we've done our homework and he has the same impact Archer did.

I'm also pretty excited to see how Engels gets on as well. Has similarities with Giles, but appears to have more of a habit of popping up with goals than Giles did/does.

Chuba is a bit of a free hit in my eyes, we got incredibly luckily we didn't offload load him last summer and now we look like making upto £10m on him. Would have been great to keep him, but all about player sales this new model we've gone down.

  13. Feels like this window has been very measured, we've improved the squad and also shipped a few out that needed to go. It does however pose some more questions come the summer.

We have 6 loanees in the squad now, realistically I think 3 of those will need to be replaced (Steffen, Giles and Archer) to keep the first 11 as strong as it is, it also could expand to 4 if Ramsey becomes an important member of the squad between now and summer. Muniz and Mowatt I think are less pressing to replace.

Then we have the out of contract players, I expect that the club will offer new deals to Howson and Smith, but Daniels and Fisher to be let go. If Howson and Smith do sign on that's two less to consider replacing. Daniels can be replaced by Brynn/Hemming and Fisher hasn't really been missed.

We then come to the players who seemingly don't fit under Carrick, or have seemingly fallen well down the pecking order the likes of Dijksteel, Bola, Jones and McNair (Pre injury to Lenihan). I wouldn't be surprised to see Bola leave at all, then I think we'll likely see at least 2 of the other 3 also leave, Jones and McNair are most likely to fetch decent fees. And considering the type of model we are appearing to go down , selling players consistently for a decent fees is key to this.

In terms of the players we have out on loan, Coburn/Brynn and Hemming are the most likely to be used in the squad next season in my opinion. There is an opportunity for Hoppe to come back and fight for a spot in the team. I also think barring a complete reversal that unfortunately Payero is likely to be shipped out again or sold.

I think we have a lot of important business to do in the summer. It feels like come summer we'll have trimmed the squad right back.
