We haven't.  Look at the games he played in before he left we were no better than we have been since he left.

As I was saying, prior to Leicester:

Without Rogers - 1 point from 3 games.

With Rogers - 4 points from 3 games.

With Leicester it evens up, which is what we're saying about Azaz stepping up, but my point still stands.

I literally talked about him struggling to impose himself on games, I’m not sure what part of that is focusing on ‘end product’? In fact apart from one sentence I barely even mention end product stats. If your gonna try and be superior and accuse me of ‘ignoring 90% of the parts’, at least read what I’ve written first and base it on that rather than what you think I’m saying…

With rogers I was never bothered about the stats, I knew they were there. He just to often had no impact on a game, then he’d pop up with a nice touch and through ball. He fell into the same catagory as goal poachers “if he’s not scoring he’s not doing anything”. With rogers it’s “if he’s not assisting he’s not really doing anything”.

Yes no doubt you watched him off the ball and seen all kinds of brilliant stuff ‘normal’ fans missed, but clearly none of that had much impact on our results or play because for a large amount of it we were poor.

Because statistically he absolutely didn't struggle to impose himself on games. My whole point is fans sometimes fans say things "as they see it" but what they see, statistically, just isn't true. It's not about superiority, it's just about every piece of evidence and analysis pointing to something which is contrary to what some fans believe.

Have we though? Crooks had better stats than rogers as does Forrs. Roger’s did start growing into the team just a few weeks before the Villa link which is why people were disappointed because it felt like we finally started to see what he was about.

That said he still played his part in some dreadful performances and often his well documented creativity was restricted to a tiny % of the game, sometimes even just 1 touch, spending the rest of the time either side struggling to impose himself on a game.

I’d say when it comes to rogers, let’s not pretend he was good all along and we didn’t see it or only a handful of people could see it. Over all there were to many games where he offered nothing, simply because he’s not at that stage in his career.

For the immediate future I’d say Azaz and McGree are an upgrade because they are just more mature in their play.

It was well documented that Rogers creative more chances that lead to goal opportunities than any other player in the Championship by the time November/December came around. That's part of the problem of stats - you can manipulate them to tell any story. For example, Boksicdink saying purely about goals. But chance creation is one of the few stats I'd happily rely on being accurate. End product stats only rely on the final player in that stat finishing, where as chance creation looks at lead up play as a whole, which is a far more robust statistics.

I'd say that Rogers suffers because so many fans are end product obsessed. He was far more important to our side than simplified stats like assists and goals - there's a multitude of plays which lead up to those moneymaker stats. Those stats were celebrated on here whilst he was a Boro player, but are conveniently forgotten now he's left.

Football is the sum of all parts, but most fans ignore 90% of those parts.

  3. I'd have loved to have seen Rogers and Azaz together in the system we played on Saturday.

Let's not pretend we haven't missed Rogers in the games prior to Leicester. His creativity was well documented as being amongst the best in the league. His absence, along with a lack of leadership in the middle without Lenihan or Howson, was a big contribution to our poor form.

Overall and in the long term , I think Azaz for Rogers will be a great deal. But it's one which has contributed to our short term struggles.

Honestly we’ve tried so many systems this season I wouldn’t see the harm in just going with the same team for Saturday. They functioned well as a unit, Silvera, azaz and O’Brien all had their best games in a Boro shirt and it’s not like we left out a bunch of regulars to play that way, other than Forrs and Dieng we played every fit senior player I think. We’re at a point in the season where why not just go with what’s worked, we can probably tweak it to be more attacking.

I think it's the best system we have with the players available. McNair at the back was a much needed leader on Saturday - which we've lacked with Lenihan and Howson out in the centre of the park. Loading the midfield also meant Leicester weren't able to utilise Ricardo as well in his cutting inside, and we were able to stifle their creativity whilst also nullifying Mavididi and Fatawu by enabling ourselves to double up on them in wide areas when needed.

Plymouth are a very different side, obviously, but I think it could prove effective. Particularly in trying to nullify Whittaker.

Interesting, were these the views of just fans or coaching staff etc?

Mainly fans, but Dennis Praet came up after the game and mentioned about the Boro tactics making it hard to find space as well as their missed opportunities. The host - ex-Leicester player Ali Mauchlen - also bemoaned the missed chances, but made a point of, essentially, "fair play to Boro for getting it right tactically on the night."

Got to say though... Really wished I was in the away end. Amazing atmosphere those lot created. The Foxes fans around me were very impressed - especially because their atmosphere is pretty flat.

  6. Having been in the Leicester Executive Suites, here's a few take aways from the away fans POV:

1 - Boro's structure and discipline won us the 3 points today. "They weren't incredible, but they were structured and disciplined, and we couldn't break them down effectively."

    2 - Finn Azaz is "a player"

3 - Boro's "tactical approach" nullified Leicester's threat. "5 at the back and waiting for inevitable mistakes worked well. Ridiculously, simply well."

4 - "Boro aren't a good team, but tactically were very astute."

Very interesting to hear it from the other sides perspective. Also, kudos to the travelling fans. I was sat in the West Stand toward the opposite corner, and the travelling fans often drowned the home support. Beautiful

Some of your highlights are players that have barely played for us.  If those are your highlights then that isn't a good sign.  VDB has been a highlight, Dieng also a solid signing, and selling Rogers for a large fee represents good work from the recruitment lads and lasses.  After that I'm not sure we've seen a lot of highlights in terms of transfer window stuff.  No real disasters either though but I'd say it's pushing it for all of those things to be highlights as it stands.

Aye, I see that thinking - but by that literally nothing in the current transfer window could ever be considered a highlight. I suppose the correct terminology would be, In terms of Azaz, Thomas, and Ayling - *at this stage* I believe they can be considered highlights.

I totally agree there's be no real disasters. Deals like Silvera and Gilbert we're still waiting on seeing what comes, but they were relatively low-risk signings financially.

Overall I do believe the club is stronger from this season's dealings, regardless of what the league table says.

  8. Regardless of how the window ends, what a positive season we've had with tranfers.

    HIGHLIGHTS:

    - VdB

    - Rogers

    - Profitability of Rogers

    - Azaz

    - O'Brien

    - The potential of ELL

    - Ayling & Thomas bringing quality and Prem experience

The lowlights are the injuries and the fact we haven't nabbed a main striker, but overall, the club is stronger than this time last year. The table might not agree, but realism is the key. The Rogers deal is a marker for what this new blueprint is capable of.

  9. All those Rogers fees reported could be technically correct. It could be £8m paid now, plus an extra £2m of guaranteed add-ons (e.g, another payment this summer) which would guarantee us minimum £10m in fee but also support Villa in their FFP tribulations.

A "up-front" £8m and "guaranteed" £10m can still both be correct in their reporting.

Was curious how it works if we actually evaluate their numbers rather than gut on whether we've missed Giles thanks to Engel or not. Now these figures obviously come with the caveats that it's Engel's first season in the division and a smaller sample size for him, but they paint a not-that-surprising picture. Giles carried the ball better and put the ball in the box more, but Engel's better defensively. What is interesting though is that their shots created for others and scoring contributions numbers are very similar.

It's tough to say one is better than the other from that, for me. I would understand people who miss Giles's deliveries; equally, I would understand people who don't miss him because of Engel covering most of the attacking attributes pretty well while being way better on the defensive ones.

If I'd known his middle name was John I'd have been opposed to him all along...

Have I missed something? I always thought Humpty being Bausor was just a OneBoro meme in the way CT being Vickers, us almost signing Jed Wallace and SmogDane's browsing history are.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! SmogDane's browser history ain't no meme...

That's some God's honest horny *** right there. You wash your mouth out, MMC 😝

We will sell Rogers if an offer comes in that represents good value to us as a club. Rogers isn’t an important or integral part of our team right now. He’s not a Hackney or a Jones. He’s dispensable to us. What’s important is that we maximise whatever fee we can get. If that means keeping hold of him for another 6 months then so be it.

£15 million is an arbitrary figure that’s been plucked out of the air with no basis or reason.

I disagree with this. I think Rogers is unique in the squad in terms of what he offers and his potential within his position(s). At Number 10 there's potentially Azaz, but that would be a risk given he's new here and has clearly been signed with Rogers still being here in mind.

I'd sooner sell Fry. Good player, but we've looked solid and stoic even without him. Take Rogers out of the side and we fold into a cloth in recent weeks.

Rogers is one of those players who fans automatically undervalue because they only look at the "money shot" stats of goals and assists. But goals and assists are simply the tip of the iceberg in terms of the lead up play; what's more important is the transitions in between that allow the opportunity for that assist/goal, and when you watch our build up play, Rogers has become more pivotal as the season has developed (hence the stats). Watch Rogers off the ball and you see his awareness and movement are key to us opening up space in defences, even when he's not physically involved in the passage of play. He's a canny young footballer.

  13. I made no secret if the fact I love Morgan Rogers. Even before he kicked a ball for Boro. I've championed him from the off - especially as a No. 10... I'd be devastated if he left so early into his development here.

Hackey, VDB, and Rogers are the three top players I'd really hate to lose.

That being said, if Rogers is keen, it might suggest he's keen to move back to the midlands and be near his family.

I so hope it's tosh... But I fear it's got legs.
