Think this will be the team though he might stick with Engel and I’m hoping Dieng goes back in.

Yeah, you know this might be the type of game where Engel can make things happen in an attacking sense. But for me, in brief viewing Thomas seems to be the more positionally aware defender, which would be useful against these who are a good attacking side

  2. I'm usually dead positive and optimistic. And for once today, going into the match I was grumpy and pessimistic. And to a man, we were brilliant. O'Brien was superb, Silvera was excellent. Rav was exceptional. What an absolute quality finish from Azaz as well, my goodness.

And yet I'm so annoyed. I said to my mate before the game, in an pissy tone, "we'll probably smash these." We're just so hot and cold. It's frustrating to see us be so poor when we can perform like that today. Don't get me wrong we rode our luck a bit.

It just sort of backs up what I said a week ago. This is a young squad that could develop into a bloody good side next year, if we can add a 2-3 players of quality.

So VDB, McNair & Clarke as a back 3 with Ayling & Engel as our wide players?

Barlaser, O'Brien & McGree in midfield and...

...Silvera & Azaz up front? 😖😕

    Interesting...and different...

I think Azaz played predominantly on the left of a midfield three at Plymouth didn't he? Maybe he's more suited to that role. Although that means McGree up front which doesn't make a lot of sense lol

Forss had a long lay off and was thrust into the team ahead of schedule due to injuries. I don't mind him coming out for a breather in this one tbh. Him playing won't be the difference in us winning/losing today, but it could be the difference next weekend having him rested up.

I reserve my right to be fed up at the moment, irrespective of your logic

We've had 20 shots and more than enough to be winning this game. The build up play isn't really the problem in this game

Respectfully, I disagree. A large portion of our shots have been with large numbers of Preston players between us and the goal. Lots from the edge of the area and others that aren't clear because of players in the way.

For me that's because we keep the ball a bit longer than we need to and they get back into position, if you get me

  6. That was an exact example of what the people on the Boro Breakdown Podcast were talking about. After 5-6 passes we should have progressed it up the field. We have 5-6 passes and barely gain a yard, and the opposition have had time to get their defensive shape back.

Sometimes we seem to keep the ball for the sake of it rather than trying to break on them

  7. I think the lineup will see one change, one of Barlaser or O'Brien for McGree. Putting Hackney back into the centre of the midfield, Azaz into #10, then obviously McGree left, Forss right and Greenwood up top.

What I'd like to see is a second switch and Greenwood out for Silvera. I don't think Greenwood is bringing enough to warrant a start at the moment and I thought Silvera looked bright. It would be

    Silvera - Azaz - McGree

                  Forss

But even then I think Carrick would probably play Silvera up front as he just doesn't seem to fancy Forss there.

Not that Glover has done much wrong but I hope Dieng is back soon too. I personally just have more confidence in him.

Score could be anything with Boro. But I'll day 2-1 win with Forss and McGree scoring ours.

I'll be watching it, for my sins

Brentford also spent heavily same as Brighton people go on like these sides spent cheaply both teams spent heavily to get promoted on attacking players.

I think it's levels though. They bought cheaper than they sold. E.g. they sold Mepham for £12m ish and replaced him with Konza for £2m. Sold Maupay for £15m and replaced him with Mbuemo for ~£5m. They sold Watkins for £25m and replaced him with Toney for ~£5m.

So yes, spending £5m each on the front two that got them up is a decent chunk, but they were replacing £40m of sales.

Promoted from League One, they adopted "the model" half way through the first season up and announced they were sacking Mark Warburton at the end of the season in February.

He finished 5th with them in their first season in the second division since 1993, and the model had nothing to do with that.

The model then led them to make a terrible appointment for the next season, he was sacked in September, then they appointed Dean Smith and sacked him after 3 years of relative mediocrity, in October of 2018-19 season, they actually sacked him with Brentford in 6th.

They appointed Thomas Frank, who had a tricky start with 2 wins in his first 12 games, which ended the play-off hopes for that season.

He significantly improved results in his full seasons in charge and he got them two 3rd placed finishes and the second ended with promotion.

They signed a tonne of players in the two first succesful seasons of the model.

So would you say that their success has had more to do with having the right manager than their recruitment?

Brighton came up from League One and then had a good first season back, followed by two seasons in the play-offs, both times they sacked the manager after failing to win in them.

The next season their new manager had a shocker and was sacked at the halfway point to be replaced by Chris Hughton who got them up automatically after they only missed out on automatic promotion on goal difference in his first full season.

Barring that half season in 2014/15, they were performing strongly in every season in the Championship, they also spent a fortune.

Yeah that sounds right, but didn't Brentford have a few years of finishing sort of 6th - 12th then all of a sudden it clicked?

  11. Is my memory going, or didn't it still take Brentford and Brighton a few years of doing this before managing promotion?

And I would say the extra time was worth it given how sustainable they've become in the Premier League, unlike many teams who've yo-yo'd.

Couldn't agree more.Im not convinced by Carrick. He still thinks he can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. He needs a more experienced number two. Not Woodgate.

    Honestly I couldn't disagree more.

I think the manager, the staff and the team are all a work in progress. I just don't think we're good enough this year. And I think we massively overachieved last season which is making a rod for our own back (dare I say it but abit like the Geordies).

I think if we add 2-3 players in the summer in key positions and develop what's here without losing too many, we can be a very good side next year.
