  1. Well I can assure the pair of you that I never said it, so who was it?

C'mon, own up, who was it who said that O'Neil wouldn't go?

My own opinion is that O'Neil has been and still is worth every penny of the £5m we paid for him and the idea that we would let him go for a derisory £2m doesn't merit serious consideration. It's just a Fleet Street hack taking the wee-wee.

[And Linnie, please sort out your FF captain, I beg of you. You've got Torres and Fabregas in your squad and your non-playing defender's replacement (well done for that, at least) has now assumed captaincy. It's driving me nuts! :D]

  2. Sky have updated their tables very quickly:

    1254788404-clip-20kb.png

It's been another of those weeks where a single player determined who would be a high-scorer and who would not. We picked up 505 points between us for an average 25¼ points each but managers with Fabregas in the team already had "a starter for 20" under their belts. Meanwhile, a bunch of other star players scored only a handful of points between them but no doubt their turn will come again.

"Fab factor" aside, there have been some notable changes in the table. SmoggsUtd's 20 points were enough to topple our long-time leader from his perch and a mere 26 points now separates 1st and 5th places. That's as close as it's been at the top for quite some time.

Meanwhile, the Linthorpians are still rudderless and last season's runaway table-topper, ABH is currently languishing second from bottom, ahead of only the league's badly neglected waifs, Jake's Allstars.

  3. If you ask his Turkish fans, they'll tell you that Tuncay is a midfielder and that his best position is on the left wing.

As now, we were sorely in need of strikers when we recruited Tuncay, so maybe he was asked during the contract negotiations whether he would be prepared to play up front? A typical bit of square peggism, even before he made the squad!

  4. Boro-Boy81, I would suggest almost any EPL/CCCL manager you can name who might be available, ranging from Roy Hodgson, down to - but not including - Roy Keane. You choose and I'll probably take your choice in preference to our present manager.

Let's try to look at this dispassionately if we can and then see if we can work out what it is that a manager actually does that makes him stand out from the crowd. Is it Artful 'Arry's barrow-boy style of wheeler-dealing in the transfer market? Is it Sir A's hairdryer treatments? Is it ***ne Wenger's classy "style" that does it? Or maybe it's Moyes' knack for overcoming adversity that is the vital ingredient?

It's none of those individually, of course, but there is no denying that all of them contribute to making a successful football manager.

Then there's that other vital ingredient that they all need: the ability to plan each match-day with the squad and form a clear idea of what they will do to achieve Plan A and also what they will do if Plan A doesn't work out. All successful managers have this skill and it endows their players with a certain something that I can't put my finger on, but I know it when I see it. It's the one vital skill that defines, above all else, whether a manager has what it takes.

    Gareth Southgate hasn't got it.

  5. Here's the latest table:

    1254230938-clip-20kb.png

It's been another high scoring week and we have averaged slightly more than 29 points each, so anything over that and you've done well.

There was a wide spread of scores, ranging from the in-form Ginger Roos' top scoring 52, all the way down to Jake's Allstars' miserable 9 points. Consequently the chart has been quite volatile again and it's noticeable how last week's in-form managers have mainly continued to perform well. Purple patches have a way of turning into brown patches, though, as Sarge will no doubt confirm. ;)

The Ginger Roos have climbed no fewer than 6 places into 6th position and that's after climbing 5 places the previous week. It's a pity we don't know their manager's forum name because I'm sorely in need of a few tips.

It's also a pity that we don't know who ?JH? is because unless s/he starts managing Jake's Allstars properly they are at risk of falling off the bottom of the table. On a similar note, can I remind Linthorpian2009 that you would now be in the top half of the table if only you had picked your obvious captain, rather than someone who hasn't played all season.

  6. I don't see a difference between "leadership" meaning a single individual and "leadership" meaning two or more individuals.

In fact, I don't give a bugger about the semantics so long as someone out there is ready to take the lead, tell our youngsters what's what and get them organised into some semblance of a football team when the pressure is on.

Maybe try Arca gain? I dunno about that, but something has to be done.

Perhaps Poggi will get 'em sorted out when he comes back.

  7. Bugrit, I Don't get your point. You are clearly drunk or just thick.

I'll make this as easy as possible

WHAT IS YOUR FIRST TEAM? WHO WOULD YOU PICK????

I'm not thick but I might be drunk.

Who I would pick is irrelevant but, as a manager, I would try to ensure that I catered for all eventualities when making substitutions. My gripe against Southgate is that he used up our subs allocation needlessly. When we needed to make a sub later, we couldn't. Did it affect the result? I think it did!

Don't try to belittle people who disagree with you, Boroboy1980. Often, it backfires.

  8. Boroboy1980, I admire the staunchness of your support for all things Boro. Truly I do.

I used to try to defend the indefensible in much the same way as you are doing now.

There comes a time, though, when even inveterate foam-handers like I am have to throw in the towel and admit that the accumulation of glaring errors have to be assigned somewhere pretty obvoius.

  9. That display of managerial incompetence beggars belief and there is now no doubt in my mind whatsoever. From being one of those urging everyone to give him a chance, I have progressed to this:

    Southgate must go!

  10. Another eventful weekend...

    1253532825-clip-21kb.png

We scored almost 700 points between us over the weekend and that's an average of very nearly 35 points per team. Managers picking up more than that have done well in what's been a fairly volatile chart.

We have a new top scorer this week. ?DW?'s massive 60 points have seen his SmoggsUtd team make up some ground on our runaway table-toppers, sgtpepper's Red Devils. Other teams continuing their recent good form include Vectorboro1, Ginger Roos, our newcomers lorcan and nearly everyone else in the top dozen in the table. Is a trend developing?

Despite Sarge's masterstroke in swapping Darren Fletcher for Nani I wonder if he's starting to look a bit vulnerable up there on his own? Will the pressure start getting to him and will he start making mistakes? Somehow, I still think it's going to take something special to topple him from his perch but SmoggsUtd might have what it takes, while VectorBoro1's manager is taking it personal, like. :D

  11. He could make a start by winning at the Hawthorns in the return fixture. It doesn't have to be 5-0, just a win will do.

It's a bit like last season when beating the division's whipping boys might have saved us from relegation. Then again, though, maybe it's not. Maybe it's just a matter of sheer bloody incompetence that led to this latest humiliation.

  12. It's on our club via satelite,so there should be plenty of links on p2p.

Now should i go and watch it on a 12 foot screen with a pint?????

See ya when i get back.:D

Yeah, right, it must have been lots better watching that on a 12-foot screen! :dodgy:

    Edit:

Sorry if that came across as really snide. It was only about an hour after the match and I was still mad as hell. What I meant was that it must have been even more galling to watch that load of shíte on a 12-foot screen.

  13. I knew we were in for a hammering when Simon buggered off about half past two. He's finally convinced me that he knows much better than I do how Boro will get on and he makes himself scarce whenever things are going to turn out badly. I can't say I blame him, either.

  14. Going back a few months, who would have contemplated a team without Huth, Downing, Tuncay and - dare I say it - Alves, to call on?

The fact that we can now think about welcoming the likes of St Leger and Forlan to the side speaks volumes. What will shout loudest of all, though, is how the fans welcome our newcomers.

They have to be given a really great welcome on Saturday and that applies to both of them. Our promotion prospects could depend on it.

  15. The best way to overcome this problem is for us to go top of the table and whup the *** out of NUFC along the way. Anything less will see Auntie Beeb continue pandering to audience figures, where they regard NUFC as a big fish in a small pond.

They are wrong, of course and twenty two CCL teams know that they are wrong. What can you do, though, when the BBC (at this level) is controlled by a bunch of girlies who are actually proud to proclaim that they know sod-all about sport and football in particular?

  16. It's great to be in a no-lose situation. I can slag off GS and SG and KL and if anything goes wrong I can always say "I told you so!"

On the other hand, on the off-chance that something they do actually works out for us, I can always say that I never said it wouldn't work out, in the fulness of time.

Returning to the question about "WHAT DOES GS HAVE TO DO TO WIN YOU OVER?" all I can say at this stage is that you have to stop asking awkward questions.

How can anybody be expected to answer such a question before we already know how well the season has gone? It makes no sense. ;)

  17. Pardon me, but are you speaking English???

Your use of of a comma before a conjunction is questionable. You have used two too many question marks. Still, nobody's perfect, eh?

  18. Sky's update has been quick:

    1252920918-clip-19kb.png

It's been another high-scoring week for the Boro Forum managers, with nearly 500 points picked up between us. Lots of goals, assists and clean sheets were up for grabs, although relatively few of them came from the usual quarters. Have any of you got Benayoun in your squad?

Meanwhile, table-topper Sarge has done it again! He's our top scorer with 36 points and shows no signs of coming back to the field, just yet.

Anyone scoring around the thirty mark has done well this week. SmoggsUtd's 34 points consolidate the team's position in second place, while the rest of us continue bobbing up and down and the Linthorpians continue their bold bid for the wooden spoon.

Linny, you'll be able to make changes to your squad any time from tomorrow (Tuesday) until kickoff on Saturday.
