Why do our commentators sound more excited when the other team scores

Drury was almost celebrating beating them just a couple of minutes ago because they've been quite poor. We've not been an awful lot better than them, very scrappy game, not surprised that there's a goal that's come here but by no means were we the only team capable.

He was bad but it wasn't even the worst LB display this season

Aye, Engel at Sheff Wed was it? Mind, he's improved a lot since then so if Thomas is just as bad as he looks, it seems odd that Engel is on the bench. Especially as Engel is our player.

The photos I post on here are from my own collection, ticket stubs, match reports, badges, press photos etc, etc

This year I'm retiring & part of my to do list, is to properly catalaogue all my collection, maybe even record it on some sort of website, if I can fathom how to do it, but in the meantime its a no go 😢

I can see the issue, shame if its come to this but it is what it is

I would imagine after all this time gathering and collating this stuff you'll want to keep ownership of it so it might not be the way forward but I wonder if the club can help, maybe Vickers too. Bit of a grey area, I guess.

Even if not, I'm sure there'll be Boro fans willing to help if they have the time. It's certainly worth asking the question here for a hand, I'm sure we have plenty of tech-savvy members and one or two might be able to bridge that gap for you to get it all into a website and maybe help teach you how to use it, too. We could possibly crowdfund something for a more experienced person to put something together if nobody here can help.

Few options to explore when the time comes, anyway. I'd like to think however capable you are technically, there are those capable of helping bridge the gap to get it catalogued and presented in a way you're happy with. 🙂

In my lifetime, George (despite struggling in PL) is still in the top 3 left backs that have played for us. Only Ziege and Franck were better. George my favourite though.

I can't get past Franck in my mind. I got to see the entirety of George's time with us and it was special throughout in so many ways. But I fell in love with football and the Boro just after the cup win and I still think about his swerved goal at Highbury to put us 3-1 up and his header at Palace later that season. Sure I had a picture of Franck on the wall cut out from a magazine, alongside future Boro striker Mido from when he got off to a good start at Spurs.

Apparently Malcolm Christie won't be attending as he was only asked a few days ago after it had been advertised for weeks. He wasn't even involved in the dressing room on that momentous occasion, instead banished to sit in the stands. For the life of me how does an organisation like MFC manage to keep shooting itself in the foot?

Very strange considering we would never have made it past the first game without that stupendous backheel in what seemed like it was a bit of a scrappy game from what little I know of it? Doesn't sit right with me he never got a medal, either. How much choice the club has in that, I don't know. But it seems like a bit of an oversight, despite what turned out to be a fairly limited spell at the club due to his never-ending injury hell.

It's hard to look at a cup win without looking at how you got there to begin with that year and every result, every goal, every penalty, every save, they all contributed in just a few games over the course of 6 months. I certainly understand where Christie is coming from with his perspective of it. After all that, to then be left as sloppy seconds in a 20 year anniversary of the event is quite something. Just a perfect reminder of what happened 20 years ago, in many ways.

  6. Will never forget this sad end to his time here during lockdowns. I know he came back a couple of times since but it never felt the same. Wish him all the success in the world.

Its a football league world article. Bottom-tier for credibility.

For what it's worth, the Galloway link is only being regurgitated by FLW. The original link was in The S*n.

My point is clearly that a contract doesn't keep a manager at a club anymore. If a bigger club wants him, he'll go regardless of how much longer is left in the deal, and it'll make little difference to us financially.

I don't agree it will make little difference to us financially. Brighton got 8-figures for Potter when he went to Chelsea. That's the extreme but that's where it's heading. If we have him tied down to a contract and someone comes in for him from the Prem, we have a leg to stand on financially. We could possibly hold out for a significant sum of money. It wouldn't need to be 8-figures to be significant at this level but if he takes us up, you'd be closer to that depending on the interested club.

That seems to be the way the game is heading and, to be fair, there was obviously always an element about it to which we're a pretty good example of - we've never hired a manager who is under contract elsewhere.

  9. Creating a stage for more fans to come to the table outside the club reps is a big step forward, too. Rightly or wrongly, there has been a growing perception I believe of disconnection between MSF and a lot of fans. It seems somewhat silly to me because MSF is a group that has tried to represent views from all different kinds of groups and backgrounds and has an open submission box on their website which is still used, but then I've been in there and seen the character of those involved and most have obviously not. Maybe now there will be an opportunity for fans who don't feel connected to any group in MSF or comfortable with communicating via them to come forward and have their views aired directly to the club if Q&As can go ahead as per what RF have said there.

The fact any prices have come down for next season is staggering to me after my experience fighting for it but that is what has been achieved right now. This is now a commitment to having views aired, listened to and hopefully responded to.

Honestly, I think that just by having those lines of communication in a respectfully open and honest manner, a lot can be achieved in terms of understanding if nothing else. I believe that is half of the battle. Committing to that communication is a big step forward from where we were, where the very idea of being open has been pushed back on.

  10. I wonder if picking the Mother's Day fixture is going to go as well for them as they hope. TBH I don't know if I'd have been able to make it anyway but it'll be interesting to see the turnout. I hope for the ladies' sake it's fantastic, though.

Don’t forget it was McGree’s wayward pass that started their attack for the second. Lots of mentions of Barlaser but once again it was a misdirected pass that lost us possession. Then game over.

I think you have to judge those two incidents separately, personally. I think like most have said in response to what you're saying, we know that we're trying to be clever in our passing to break through teams and we have to be willing and able to react when it doesn't work. McGree's pass looks so loose and void of much intention beyond getting rid of it from his own possession, for sure. But it also happens inside the Plymouth half of the pitch when we had what... 5 players behind the ball? We initially respond to try and close the gaps and we do cut the passing lanes to every player apart from the most dangerous one.

Watching it again and in terms of Gyabi, VDB is actually pretty close to him and could maintain his position. But Barlaser doesn't seem to have any idea what's going on behind him and McNair isn't willing to move over to cover either. VDB has to race back into position because neither of his team-mates are willing to take Hardie, so VDB leaves Gyabi on his own. This all happens in the space of a 1-2 from Randell.

Gyabi and Barlaser haven't moved, VDB has gone chasing Hardie. Literally 2 seconds for VDB to have left his man and for nobody to pick him up which is the real killing point of the move.

It really doesn't have to be binary, does it? I'd imagine almost every team has one or two loan players at any one time. If we get to August and still lack strength in a couple of key positions, I don't see any issue bringing in a couple of PL-standard players for the season. Our loans last season worked their socks off for us even though they weren't permanent signings. You just have to choose a Giles rather than a Connolly, and an Archer rather than a Greenwood. And to be honest, that's where we tend to struggle because our quality control is all over the place at the moment.

I think if you're going for it, it makes sense. But this season, spending big money on loans when we didn't really have that much to spend anyway was always going to be too much of a risk given the competition above us. We did it last year and it nearly made the difference but it's unsustainable. And I think when you talk about Giles and Archer over Connolly and Greenwood, that's very much a representation of how much you're willing to put into it financially speaking.

I'm less concerned about it next season as I think it might be the right time to go for quality earlier on, though I think there's real value showing what you can do and staying in the race up to January and then investing heavily into short-term loans / riskier purchases. We were a good team under Karanka that year with some decent investment in the summer but Ramirez got us over the line. You don't want to leave yourself short of funds come January, Kieffer Moore this January just gone another more recent showing of that in keeping Ipswich in the top 4 and in the fight for automatics.

  13. I'm none-the-wiser why anybody talked about us as promotion contenders this season, in that respect. Not like we were building upon the same team that got us into the play-offs the year before, as was the case when Karanka took us up the year after. We were certainly never automatic promotion contenders this season. Was never quite sure how it would go with Leeds or Southampton but Leicester were my surefire favourites to go up from before a ball was even kicked. I was always convinced at least one of the other teams would be there or thereabouts and then we'd just be in the same mad rush to cross the play-off finish line again, same as a whole lot of other teams. Hell, even with where we are now with 12 games to go, a good run could put us back in the mix. It'd have to be right round the corner but nonetheless, in that respect, we're still kind of promotion contenders, just never in the way I'd consider.

If anything, I think there should be more pressure on us next season though, especially if the current bottom 3 in the Premier League stays the same. We've got money to spend, suitors for our best players to add to that or very good players in the squad if we can keep hold of them. Resolve some key issues, get the injury situation sorted out and with that money, this team should improve a lot. I'd say only Luton are a better squad than when they left the league but none of those bottom 3 have anything like the squads Leicester, Leeds or Southampton have got.

Unfortunately, this season has so far played out pretty much as I expected it to, with a good cup run the only thing of significant note alongside the inconsistent performances of a developing side.

I might be being too critical, but is glover too close to his near post too? The amount of space the player has to place his shot into the far post is incredible, it didn't even need to be in the corner.

From the angle behind the goal, I can see why Glover moves across to cover his near post but he doesn't adjust his position when Hardie cuts inside. He can't protect his whole goal but it seems to me like the bigger issue is the side he gets beaten on. The point where the shot gets taken seems to show him pretty much inline with VDB which seems the only place he shouldn't be.

He could be a little tighter but, as you say,  it looks like he's thrown off by Gyabi being all alone in the middle. Regardless of whose playing that's unacceptable at this level.

Actually watching it back, I'm looking at McNair's position and I wonder that if by sitting so deep, he's forced Rav back to cover for Hardie, maybe expecting the pass to be released quicker. He could have probably just stood his ground and blocked the pass but if it gets played by him on his other side then McNair is playing him onside.

Barlaser's role is probably the most frustrating of all though, isn't it. Further up, we've tried to close down and cut the passing lanes. The only pass that's on for Randell is to Gyabi and it's a simple one. The ball comes to Gyabi, Barlaser is not marking him. He turns with the ball, takes another touch and Barlaser doesn't close him down. If he doesn't close down, he can at least try to cut the pass out to Hardie and he doesn't do that either. He's just watching the game go by.

The defending for the second goal is so unbelievably bad. Gyabi being able to turn in midfield, completely unchallenged, is criminal. Barlaser appears to be marking nobody. Rav is then done by Hardie. Awful stuff.

Think apart from maybe showing Hardie onto his weaker foot, Rav is on a bit of a hiding to nothing when it reaches him. Hardie takes it well, I think. No surprise that it comes from problems in midfield though.
