  1. Am I the only one who literally cannot stop running over simulations of the next 3 games in my head?

I've actually become obsessed. Every other thought I have is about Boro. Nothing else matters to me right now besides Ipswich, dear me.

Still confident we're going to go up, as champions, and we'll win these last 3 games.

  2. I don't post often but like most people I was fuming earlier on today.

I've had a calm down and given it some thought and I reckon Aitor has been clever today.

He's basically told Nugent, Downing, Adomah etc. "Here lads, I've signed some quality players in January and now it's your chance to prove you're better than them." If they had gone out and performed amazing, they'd've stayed in the team and it's a win win. However, as it is, they played poorly, and now Aitor can blood the new players and if anyone moans he can say "Well you've had your chance and we didn't win in 3."

Ultimately the games in hand will be key to our success (or lack of). I think next week we'll see a stronger team, if we can knick a win we'll go on a decent run, and if we make sure to win the games in hand we've got there's no reason why we won't kick on.

  3. I feel like Nugent is a much more thought out signing than Rhodes. We're attempting to sign Rhodes purely based on his stats - the lad scores goals. But overall, Nugent I think will suit our style better. He'll drop deeper and work harder in that lone striker role than Rhodes would, and should be less isolated as a result. He's also more likely to set up the wingers or no. 10 for an opportunity.

Not to mention he isn't MASSIVELY over-priced.

  4. Am I the only one really not hung up on us signing a striker?

I genuinely think the issue is the system behind the striker. Doesn't matter whose playing ST, could be Diego Costa, in that game against Preston then they'd not have scored with the lack of service we offer. Squad that we have now is more than capable of getting us up, we just need to play to Kike / Stuani's strengths.

  5. I recognise that he was decent for us last year lads but the fact is he isn't built for playing the lone striker role. Doesn't have the strength nor aerial ability to bring down our long balls and send others into play. Obviously when we're playing against shabbite teams who don't have the quality to stifle us he does well, but whenever I saw us play against a half-decent team we were very, very easy to defend against with Bamford upfront on his own.

Ayala and Gibson will inevitably hoof it upto him, he'll lose it, back to square one.  It's why we got battered at the end of the season and ended up losing out on promotion. I'm happy to have him with us don't get me wrong, but I want someone in the Murphy-esque mould who can dominate a defence through sheer physicality to play alongside him.

Whilst I understand what you're saying and agree to a certain extent, I think signing Downing is a clear signal that we will be less direct this season.  That's someone we're going to want to get on the ball as often as possible and we aren't going to do that by launching it all the time.  This is one of the main reasons why I wanted changes in midfield and our game to evolve from last season when we were discussing the things much earlier in this thread.

It's a fair point, actually. If we do start playing it through Downing, out wide to the pace of Adomah and Carayol, then I can see Bamford being a pretty effective finisher in the middle. I suppose it's right to say that Bamford was stifled by our lack of creativity in the final third. I'd love for Karanka to just take the shackles off the lads next year, let them give it to the wingers and proper bomb at the full backs, let Downing pull the strings through the middle. Think we've got attackers who are too good to be playing long balls, personally.

  7. I highly doubt that "reshaping the entire front line" just meant swapping Vossen for Stuani. Frankly I wouldn't be confident with just Bamford and Kike either, considering Stuani seems to be more a CF than a line-leading striker.

Bamford, as we've seen, cannot effectively play up top in our 4-2-3-1, and goes missing frequently when isolated in games (Bournemouth, Watford, Play-Off Final). For me "experienced championship striker" simply has to refer to somebody else, whose had more than 1 successful season in this league.
