lenihan is our best cb by far imo. but the blackburn fans thought he was just okay. no wonder carrick is signing new cb's and wilder. if clarke ever gets fit it will be him and lenny first choice.
I really doubt that.

He isnt good enough and needs to be gone. Not good enough in all parts of his game.
Nonsense. So many people on here had decided this before the season kicked off and now you can’t unsee it. He’s been ok so far, I’d like a first choice to come in but he’s done decent as “cover”. It’s not his fault the club has failed to sign anyone.

I've always questioned the Crooks as a striker decision, and I honestly cannot understand what's going through Carrick's mind when he keeps persisting with it.
It does not work.
He seems determined to play anyone except Forss there.

Strange starting line up and stranger subs.

It’s like all that quality football last season was just a dream and it’s back to this tedious rubbish we’ve watched for about 6 years.

Pretty awful half.
Nothing upfront again, need to get Forss and McGree on for Rogers and Crooks.

I really have no idea how Forss can be sitting on the bench with Rogers upfront. Very very poor decision from Carrick.

That second case scenario would cost us over 10 million pounds, I get the sentiment but then you get to the situation we dread the most high earner that you cant shift. He has to go now at the peak of his value rather than blow the wage structure.
Do we actually have a wage structure?
I’m not sure how it comes to £10m? Assuming 35k per week even for 4 years is only £7m

What if we’ve set wage boundaries as a club, and have a certain ceiling for our top paid players. Do we break that just for akpom and risk upsetting our other highest earners who we probably have certain promises to?
They are good questions but I don’t think we know the answers, I certainly don’t. I think with the boundaries question we probably are trying to set some boundaries after many years of being really stupid with what contracts we offer but whether we have anything solid in place who knows.
In terms of upsetting other players I doubt anyone else will be earning enough for this deal to impact them. I am assuming he’s already the top earner. Maybe there could be one or two but I’m sure they’d prefer Akpom stays

I wouldn’t say anybody is “okay with it” as such. I just think some people are realists and are looking at the situation in a more pragmatic sense. It’s very easy as a fan to say just give him a blank cheque when you’re not the one who actually has to front that cost and take on all the jeopardy that comes with it.
From the clubs point of view he’s 28 in a couple of months, he’s our highest earner, and he’s coming off the back of the only decent goalscoring season of his career. Chances are he’s never going to be worth this much again.
So do you break your wage structure and offer him what he wants, knowing fine well that if he reverts to form we’ll be hemorrhaging money and unable to shift him? Or do you cash in now to the tune of an 8-figure fee, reinvest that money into the squad, and potentially defer the sale of another key player like Hackney for a few more years?
Imo taking emotion entirely out of it there’s only one correct answer to this question and I made my peace with it a while ago.
While I totally get your opinion and it’s the safest way to go I lean the other way and would gamble a bit in this case. For me I think he’s too important and we should give him the extra ~10k p/w he apparently wants. It’s going to cost us approx £500k extra this season but it means if we don’t go up we get a fee for him next season. I really believe he will do well enough in our team this season not to lose value. He’d be a year older I know but he’d also have a longer contract and (I believe) would have a good two year track record instead of one.
the risk is he plays rubbish and gets very few goals and we then have him stuck on the books for another couple of years. Does anyone really think this is likely? I really don’t as I think he really suits the way Carrick wants us to play.

Jesus this place. The negativity is truly pathetic. How do you guys cope with real life.

I've been saying Coulson isn't good enough from the start and now everyone is on board. Honestly don't think he's good enough to be back up either.
I’m not on board. Seriously you are painfully negative.

He’s not good enough. It sounds harsh but it’s the reality. He isn’t good enough.
If he stays fit he’s easily good enough to be back up in our system.

You will be hounded off the forum within days I think. The pitchforks are already coming out.

Well it’s definitely a kick in the nuts if he goes to Luton. I definitely wanted him back but the club must have their reasons and I’m more inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt these days than previously.
but it is going to be interesting viewing on here over the next 24 hours.

I have a feeling at some point in the next few years Hayden Hackney will be our record transfer fee received. Buzzing he signed a new deal, I thought he was quality yesterday, looked like a premier league player. So comfortable, they way he opens his body just completely changes the dynamic of the passage of play

I wonder how much Smith coming off contributed to our poorer performance after the injury. Or maybe players were distracted after that point
Could have had an impact for sure given how nasty it looked.

That’s 5 more assists he will get from Coulson.
More negativity. Coulson can play and is good going forward. I doubt he will play much as no doubt we will sign someone and if not he will probably get injured but if somehow he played a full season he would get a fair few assists.

I agree 👍
I think without Giles delivery akpom would struggle for 15 goals in open play.
Obviously we are going to put an increased rate on his head after last season but if he's not going to sign a new contract which we have been informed of them I think it's best for both parties to move on but I suppose the injury is also preventing that.
Today highlighted how much we need to sign a LB and proven striker otherwise we will struggle in the final 3rd.
How do you get to that number logically? You are taking 14 goals away from last season just because Giles isn’t here? Obviously Giles didn’t create that many for him and any replacement you’d hope would create some also.
everyone seems to be very negative again today.

Hopefully Smith isn’t too badly injured but it doesn’t look good.

Not sure where the idea that Hackney and Barlaser can't play together has come from but it seems pretty wrong here.
Someone concluded that in the second minute.

Akpom is a strange one.
He’s had one good season in his career.
Let’s say the reported 20-25k a week is right what would you go up if you were the boro hierarchy? 30k 35k 40k
Yeah it is a difficult one.
But I wouldn’t say he’s had one good season in his career, I’d say he’s had one good goal scoring season in his career, he’s been a decent player otherwise who doesn’t score many. It’s not like he’s been garbage the whole time.
Will he score 29 again? Almost no chance. But if you guaranteed me the same level of general performance next season and say 15 league goals in the number 10 role I’d definitely extend his contract on a higher wage. I think to be fair to him he deserves a payrise based on his performances last year.
If any of us had an absolutely amazing year at work we’d expect reward, not people saying “yeah but you didn’t do so good before that”. Ultimately it’s down to how much extra he wants and we just have no idea, so we have to trust the club to get it right.

Sorry, perhaps I should have said that my point was to emphasize that we have always struggled to score goals for one reason or another and without Chubas goals last season we would have had a similar tally to previous years.
Jesus. We’d have presumably picked someone else upfront in all those games rather than play with ten men and you’d assume they’d score some goals so it’s not as simple as just deducting his goals.
I’m really amazed by the negativity on here. This isn’t aimed at you Jonny but a more general comment.
