There is no way on earth he hasnt, well other than the first meeting being so far wide apart that we havent even come close to agreeing. I dont think its a case of not trying just the two parties are miles apart. For what its worth I think both sides are correct, we can't pay the figures asked for but he deserves that salary and contract security given his age and performance last season.

I would keep him around as a squad option but thats about it. He is positionally very poor which is why he doesnt get many minutes. He may get more gametime this year depending on the profile of the left back that comes in. As giles was effectively playing as a winger the correct choice was the more disciplined smith, however I thought smith majorly tailed off last season.. So I fully agree with this

I didn't think he was all that brilliant in the back 3, physically great and good at covering space but from what I remember especially away from home it was so ragged with Dijksteel and McNair all over the place positionally leaving fry super exposed

You've got me there, but i'm a boring man and like to see the club run in the best way possible. I mean in the ideal world we tell everyone to scarper he stays 30 goals again and he renews a premier league player. But the probability of events there are low which leads me to prefer a sale. It's just the reality for a non parachute payment club you get your pants pulled down. He's turning 28 and will be absolutely desperate for a 3 or 4 year deal which he is obviously not getting here, player power wins in the end. We get what we can or we get nothing.
