  1. Geoff Horsfield? He's even older than I thought!!!! :) No it was Arthur Horsefield if I remember correctly. Scored a lot of goals but missed a shed load more, often referred to as "donkey" Imagine today calling a 25-30 goals a season striker a donkey today !! His positional sense was great but his execution varied between wonderful and dire and he was not quite quick enough Did he end up as a defender at Charlton ? ......... it's a long time ago and its late for me ........ I could be talking rubbish

    Marvin Emnes

Do you mean marvin and the marvellos Call them what you will. Individually they are good but together they can wreak havoc in opposing defences. Their opportunity to achieve legendary status is here IMO

    Game time

Sadly one or two of these lads are not going to hang around nor should we expect them too. Football is a short career you have to maximise your playing time. From what I can gather Haroun and Hoyte would prefer not to be here and that's fine. Thanks lads and off you go Whitehead is probably on his last big payday and so not going anywhere. Richardson fits into the same mould more or less as does Parnaby We've yet to realise that Friend is a better centre back than a left back and utilise him properly. We have to decide if we want him to stay as a centre back Juke is difficult t

Starbuy you've touched on a very important point. Whilst Marv has played well this season it is his companions that are helping make his life easier. You can't slack mark any of them as they will punish you and you cannot afford to double up on one of them as they can all play/score. They're all quick too Lets hope that Marvin and his Marvinettes all play on Saturday and weave the same magic
  5. I was thinking about the win over Donny. It's a long time since we did it before. I've a feeling that it was back in the 60s when we had our one season in the third division and won 4-0 away (presumably the old Belle Vue ground) I do realise we had another one in the 80s That in itself is not significant other that it was the watershed of that season. We'd had an indifferent start to life in a lower division and were not doing well. Then we realised it was not impossible and the strength and belief of the side grew. Was that the year we had two strikers over 29 goals O' Rourke and H

    Marvin Emnes

There is no doubt that Emnes this year is not the Emnes of last year. He is much better. Some of our lads are still viewing him as the man he was last year It was the same at Barnsley as everywhere else you go, They know his name and are "frightened" of him. He was very unfortunate not to score with a cracking shot. Juke however had several opportunities and never really threatened but I suppose at least he was in the position. Can we fuse them and have one player with all their qualities - no ! thought not
  7. Whoever we get I think they will be very lucky. I believe we have a good group of players. I feel very much the same way I felt when we sacked Stan Anderson, sad. Big Jack then used one free acquisition ( Bobby Murdoch) to turn them into a very good side.
  8. Thanks Whitey. I was sat in the East stand along with yous lot. I was surprised the the "Ulster Pele" was allowed to get to the shooting point. There were several guys who did not do their jobs to allow him there. There are days when some guys do something extraordinary. It was his day on Saturday. Up to that point he'd been poor bordering on useless and arguing with team-mates etc. .......... almost a liability we weren't great but the Pole had missed two guilt edged opportunities. You were lucky to be level it could have been 0-2. To that point we'd looked the better team,
  9. last year it was the first game of the season and we took half of Teesside. We were going to bury them and get our promotion season off to a flying start. We lost 0-1 The previous year we'd had a purple patch and were completely unplayable and won 3-1 Scotty, Robbo and Marv scored in pretty close succession in the first half. They may be bottom of the league but you can be sure they'll give it all they've got. I cannot see it being a walkover by any means ......... but wouldn't it be nice if it was ? of course I'm going and the pies and ale are good too
  10. Having seen Jake take control of midfield, destroy teams with his passing and find team-mates with his back to them (usually Edward to be fair but there was an understanding that was almost telepathic between them - wonderful to watch) I can only wish him the best of luck. If you allow Jake to play his natural game he seems to thrive. Try and fit him into a set team pattern and he seems less comfortable and his performance seems to suffer. I'd love him to get a pro contract if not with us then with another team who will allow him to play his natural game. He could be very good

Depends on the personality but I have met people who would find that sort of recognition/title attractive. I could see some people finding that such an incentive that would persuade them to decide in a particular way Whether they would forgo financial reward for the recognition/title is however open to debate.

    U21 V SAINTS

Anyone go ? I'd be very interested to learn how the two young fullbacks (Bennett and Meling) got on against a couple of much better than average wingers Rowe and Isgrove. Their coach was very critical of their centre backs but it seems to me that Smallwood and Ledesma just passed their way through them. I'd be interested in that too
  13. Sorry sir he cost us the game at Huddersfield alone and unaided we lost 2 goals in the last 5 minutes to lose 1-2. Dropped the first on Alan Lee's toe end and then managed to move over to anticipate a cross in the last minute leaving the sub a chance to belt it in the corner from some distance He then avoided the not covering the near post scenario and Eagles put it over him at Bolton. I forget the other game at the end of last season but he cost us a goal there too. Sadly 4 goals in three games the counter argument is how many did he save and the answer is more than a few
  14. I struggle to understand why we don't play one of our international right backs ( Varga, Rhys and Hoyte) and play an ageing and not very quick Richardson instead Can anyone play left back ?
  15. Grazie Chris Most of the guys fit but I thought Fryer was a ginger haired guy. I've only seen him once. I think he was benching for the u 21s at Bolton - looked terrified. He was sent off to play with the u 16s on Saturday, I thought. The keeper looked very much like Luke Coddington but he was much bulkier than when I last saw him ( if it was him) Helm if he scored was definitely him at right back. I'm slightly puzzled as I think he came on at right back as a sub in the u 21 game a week or three ago but looked completely different. Perhaps it was the lights at Bolton and his "mak
  16. I was hoping someone would help me out a bit with a team sheet. Lets do it by numbers instead then 1. Goalkeeper - not really a lot to do 2. Right back I didn't notice him in the first half but in the second he tackled ferociously ran forward well at great pace and scored as well 3 Tall ginger full back effective Got booked for cuddling the Bolton centre forward prior to a corner ( Bolton centre forward got booked too for trying to cuddle him back) 4. Midfielder very effective often by getting his body between his opponent and the ball. Saw more of the defensive role in the fi
  17. 5-0 win 1-0 up after 4 minutes of the first half and another 2 minutes into the second. The final quarter we scored virtually every time we attacked so it could have been more. I could only identify about three of the players which I found a bit scary. Hard work finding some one who did not play well and about half of them were exceptional. Ref however top scored with 7 yellow cards
  18. I noticed when I checked last evening that the venue had been removed from the Boro web site fixture list I'm wondering if that means behind closed doors ? Is due off at 12.30 and I'd have to leave at about 11 to get to the venue which I believe to be Leigh Sports village at Pennington Flash UPDATE Well the Boro ticket office don't know and its definitely not at Leigh the groundsman tells me.!! The county Ground at Leyland appears shut and Bolton Wanderers ticket office / shop did not know there was a game !!! ..... but added helpfully if there is it will be at the academy at
  19. As an U18 they play week in week out, 30+ games easily a season. Till last season after you moved from U18s you would be playing 12 games a season. They go from games week in week out to little or nothing. Hence the slower rate of progress. Hence we should now be expecting a continuing steady improvement now the u 21 league is happening ? They are playing more frequently and against a better class of opposition. Lets hope it makes the difference
  20. I also think Smallwood attitude and loyalty have been top notch. The club need to give him the options if they are not going to play him. I also happen to think he's a better player than we think Whitehead has not been so good. So get Richie on the park at least he'll last longer than Deano before he runs out of puff. Put him on instead of Leadbitter at least he will have his head up looking for the pass and his delivery of a free kick will be better With Varga I don't think there's an argument and Butterfield, well I'm still thinking about that one
  21. I've got to the point where I don't care what the formation is or isn't I'd love three points but the world will not end if it doesn't happen. Mowbray's fine ? Mowbray's rubbish ? I don't even care about that All I want is those 11-14 guys to get out on the field at the Riverside tomorrow and be the best they can be. If they put in every little bit of effort they can, I cannot ask any more from them. If it is any less than that, We can and should ask what are they doing here and why are they wearing that Boro shirt
  22. Despite all the hype I do still wonder if Main will be the answer to the striker crisis. There are days when he looks great and there are days when he makes you wonder "if" Reach has been there once ( Newcastle) and doesn't want to miss out but he may need to be reminded about what's required from time to time. My view is he's a cracking left back and a good left winger. Brobbel is the sort of player who'll never let you down from minute 1 to minute 95 ish you'll get committment and focus all the time. Messi however he is not
  23. "If it wasn't for bad luck we'd have no luck at all" we were clearly born under a bad sign

    Ben Gibson

I think you'll find that Ben was the left back of choice for York - much to my surprise. I was used to him being a central defender usually with Jackson. However he was with them at Wembley on two occasions. Then when he moved to Tranmere he moved more centrally again Despite his tender years he ran and organised their back-line and was very highly thought of. I don't think Mr Woodgate or Mr Williams will take his position in the starting line up away very easily. If he stays he will be the Boro captain before too long in my view

    Frank Mulholland

Much to my absolute surprise Frank played in both of the games that I saw in my first season 1953/54 The 4-0 defeat by Preston on the opening day of the season and I thought we'd beaten Charlton 2-0 later that season but apparently we lost but I got the score right
