  1. my mother used to call them "the trackless". She'd gone to school in the Boro by tram from Stockton along the wilderness. Wasn't their depot on the North Ormesby side of South Bank roughly where the speedway track is now
  2. I cannot make my mind up about Grant. He certainly was the most street-wise of our midfielders last year. I did worry about his tendency when he had the ball and we were attacking to jog forward 20 yards allowing the opposition defence to reorganise. We drew at Burnley and had he not been there we might well have lost as he had the ball under his personal control for what seemed half the game. Granted he was not going forward but he had it and he looked after it very well. In a more advanced role this year he will not have a lot of time to think and it might benefit him playing by ins

Powlay, myriads of apologies, looks like my attempt at humour didn't translate too well, sorry. I can't believe it was that much last year either and the u21s at Blackburn cost me only £2. I did wonder if Darlo were regarding it as a 1st team game not an u 21 game. I do think that all the pre-season games have been expensive this year. Clubs ought to be doing their best to maximise their revenue but Rotherham would not sell me a one off parking ticket on the night despite having acres of space. Morecambe were going to go down the same route but fortunately the receptionist had some br
  4. I wonder ! Last time I saw him play was at Blackburn for the u 21s back end of last season. He looked "lost" It seems to be a phase that a lot of the younger lads go through. Matt Dolan seems to have come back from Yeovil much stronger, mentally and physically. I don't know him well enough to make the call but a loan may be better for his development
  5. Sir If you have the slightest doubt abut Whitehead/ Varga think Smallwood his performance against Rotherham pushed him into the frame. His range and swiftness of passing means an attack moves much faster. He's head up and looking all the time Gibson too is another for this year Woody is going to struggle I fancy and Burgess needs experience
  6. I dislike him as well but he is one of Mowbray's favourites. It would appear that neither of you saw him at Morecambe where he was very good and scored a goal of outstanding quality that no one else in the squad would have achieved and might never even have thought of. Technically he's a***st the best we have. I have seen him be mediocre and I've seen him be poor but if he's on song then he is the best we have
  7. Have to agree. Reach should be in the squad imo, Main/Smallwood and Halliday then same but I really don't have any faith in Luke Williams and Cameron Park. Shame cos they had the potential. They need to go out on loan/move permanently. There is no doubt that Smallwood was the stand out player at Rotherham so yes that's a definite Reach is another definite because of his versatility on the left side. I remain unconvinced on Halliday at left back. He looks unnatural and plays unnatural but his effort is 100%. When I last saw Luke W he looked a good player who did not know where he
  8. He was there a relatively short time. I remember little or no drama and few if any crosses from that side. If that is accurate, then, yes that is the case. The majority of his game however, was played higher up the field and the impact he made was much less than was the case at Morecambe. The reasons for that were not completely obvious to me

cheapskate !! ..................... and whilst I might agree with you I do not get too many local opportunities so I went to Rotherham and paid less ........... but I'm now a concession. keep your eyes skinned for Richie Smallwood this season. If he plays half as well as last night again he ought to make the starting XI
  10. fixed :P He looked exactly like a guy who was quite good a while back but was coming back and was nervous about it. Reality in other words Had I not been there I'd have come to the same conclusion. In truth he played the Whitehead role but better and passed immediately to our players and then was back in position and space to take the return to pass immediately again to another one of our players. His head was up all the time looking. He does not have Whiteheads bulk nor is he great with a partner but his first touch passing was exceptional My thoughts on full bac
  11. As I was going out thro the door my wife said "enjoy yerself" Don't be silly I'm going to see the Boro ! Well we won despite the Ref who is a Rotherham lad and supporter. And he thinks 3=2, it was Howard Webb. OK he sees it differently to me and he's closer to the action. Lets say I was not impressed Ross Turnbull played and looked as though he hadn't played for ages. There were a series of corners at which he did nothing but miraculously they didn't score. I was relieved when he didn't appear for the second half. Steele was terrific and perhaps the reason they didn't win. For

there's a car park adjacent to the ground which holds maybe 50 cars. Very handy straight off the bypass. Nice facilities, decent bar and food area
  13. PM I'm off there tonight. I think we should be ok now that the thunderstorms have moved away. They were horrendous here for a couple of hours from about 7 am. Young Bennett seems to be very highly thought of. He is certainly very busy. A smart side will probably target his height. We only got an allocation of 200 so either its a poor attendance or a lot of guys will pay on the gate. I'd better go early and find where the ground is ! Rotherham's site is warning of an earlier start time of 07.30 pm which is what I thought it was anyway but they are also saying that the away su
  14. now what do I read into that ? Juke's not fit and Macs off ??. Juke played ok last night but looked a bit heavy legged. ........ we'll see I'm not good with hints, sorry - 2+2 can = anything from 2 to 9
  15. Whilst it might be taking a chance I do wonder if we need a centre back. Having watched Gibson, Burgess and Jackson last evening I suspect that we may be on the point of no addition being necessary. Which one is going to play with Rhys when Woody is not fit ? Gibson and Jackson have played together frequently and always looked in control. I think I'm of the opinion that we do not need a long term addition. I'm not going to Hartlepool. It will be interesting to see who plays and how they do
  16. I would guess that part of my undoubted enthusiasm for Emnes yesterday was that it was in sharp contrast to last season. Also I've seen Emnes do virtually the same against Sheff United off an Arca trough ball. I've known for a year or three that he frightens the opposition to death. I'd like us to see us get behind him and make it happen for the season. With that sort of ability 20 odd goals is easily possible. Do we need that Chilean geezer when Marv can play like that ??
  17. Cheers Marz I was beginning to wonder if I'd dreamed it. It is the sort of goal that people do dream about. I'd certainly love to see it again but nothing beats it in real time
  18. To find the whole of the bar and waiting staff and the medics stood on the forecourt for half an hour before the game made one wonder a little. Some said it was the Boro lads warming up a parmo in the dressing room. However in true Boro fashion we all blamed Mowbray ! Why ? Well we've blamed him for everything else - he'll be used to it by now. Did we play well. In short, yes. Were we a lot better than them ? No but our better players were significantly more effective. Who had a bad game ? Well that's a short list for a change, no one Who was good ? Stand out player was
  19. Fowler ? as in Jake Fowler ? I thought we'd released him and he'd signed for Gateshead. At 0-0 I'm glad I didn't bother lets hope its better tonight at Morecambe

VB I've no interest in shooting the messenger or any other person but I believe that it is very important that they hit their peak fitness before we start the season. I found it astounding but once maximum fitness is attained it will the gradually decline over the season. With only 5 weeks from return to first match there is no time to pussy foot about. They need to get to peak fitness and then have time to relax into the season so that max fitness is achieved before the season starts and maximum performance is available on 3 Aug. I'm surprised that no one has taken the trouble to ex
  21. I'm surprised that anyone thinks his attitude stinks from this interview
  22. Humpty I am sorry you're annoyed with us but please watch what GL actually does. Technically outstanding and a grafter he is. He is reliable too. That may be what is required in this league. A lot of the guys appear to have spotted other qualities that are not quite so desirable. I gave my reasons and when I specifically looked at aspects of his game. I do not see the need to be annoyed but realism does need to be part of one's appreciation of a player. Equally I saw Marvin win us the game at Brighton. No one else looked likely to score but other than that he didn't have a great
  23. In terms of technical ability Leadbitter is top of the shop. There's only Marvin that comes close. GL is not great at midfield tackling and he takes a poor set piece. Considering he took the vast majority of set pieces last year his number of assists is a poor return. Coming forward he is a debatable force. Having listened to some of the debate I watched Smallwood and Leadbitter particularly against Sheff Wed. When Smallwood had the ball and was coming forward he had his head up and looking for a pass and was not afraid to pass long and accurately. GL by comparison toddled along at

Exactly 22 just enough for 2 sides. Difficult to argue that Luke Williams is one of the top 4 strikers. Also difficult to see Burgess and Gibson not being first team squad this season Hines and Hoyte are either injured or on international duties. TM has referred to 24 this year. Is that it ? I'd guess not but he has taken his top 22 as there will be tactics as well as training ? We'll see when we get to Morecambe and Rotherham etc.
  25. Thanks - its just me being impatient ...... as usual !
