Emanuel Pogatetz Steve McClaren signed the - frankly slightly psycho - Austrian defender for £1.8m. A tiny sum for the hard man’s contribution to some memorable Boro years. Playing at left back, centre back, covered in blood, or adorned with a mask - Manny "never [gave] less than 300%" every single game, to quote McClaren himself. Strong in the tackle, good in the air - he was the sort of highly committed, high work rate player the fans love. Shay Given Only made 16 appearances while on loan in the 13/14 season, but did enough to be remembered as a contender for the most naturally gifted shot stopper to wear the Boro keeper jersey. 10 clean sheets in those 16 games is why. It's not really that many in the grand scheme of the whole squad: GK - Schwarzer RB - Young CB - Ehiogu / Festa CB - Southgate / Woodgate LB - Queudrue CM - Boateng LM - RM - AM - Juninho ST - Viduka ST - Ravanelli If Poggy gets in, we'd still be one defender short of 2/position. So many Boro fans hated on him for very little reason... But as you say, you don't get within touching distance of an England call up - especially as a midfielder in that era - without significant talent. The best parts of his game just weren't noticed by many. He was brilliant tactically, and his off the ball work was excellent. Link to post Share on other sites
