The Summer/Autumn transfers thread 2020 aka TURN DOWN FOR WHAT(more)

Recommended Posts

I would think that there is zero odds of us signing Phil Jones due to his wages alone. The below article confirms that Clubs outside of the Premiership spending big bucks any time soon is unlikely or stupidly ridiculous, unless of course its one of the usual suspects. NW's general comments on signings I think reflect the reality of Football life rather than him not being backed by SG in the transfer market.

Hi guys! PAOK fan here from Greece. You are getting a really hard worker in Akpom. He is a top lad and a good professional. When he first came, he was considered a bench player. It was the 2018-19 sea

Morsy nearly done

Williams fee nearly agreed. 1.75million rising to 2.5 (So 1.75 then 😂).

Watmore to be offered a contract until January after the international break.

Probably get a longer deal when we sell Spence.

That's good news and if NW is happy then we should be as well.

And as for Spence, if things are going well why would he want to leave, see the job through!

It might not be just about football.  I think if we get bids for any player they will be under pressure to leave.

If Traore can be improved by Pulis, there is a chance that Spence can be improved by proper coaches, still early days for him, up to the lad to work on his game but if his confidence gets boosted, then still plenty of time, l know he is frustrating at times, but he is still only 20... and if anybody is going to be poached this season, my money would be on Patrick James Coleman McNair. Sheffield United have a few Irish lads and Lundstram is stalling on his contract....  so how much do you think he will go for?

Solskjaer will be sacked before january and Jones will stay to try and impress the new manager.

If United's European results start going south, he'll be gone before the end of November.
Or if United qualify from the group and the results domestically are still poor they give him the chop.
Poch will replace him in my opinion.

He would be a tough sell the way he is playing right now wouldn't he? We would need a large bid and a replacement before letting him go right?

Based on our recruitment over the last few years if I was Warnock I would want people signed sealed and delivered before selling anyone.

Not realistic I know.

I would definitely take Watmore as an option off the bench. Think he could be useful to bring on around the 70th minute to cause problems with his energy and work rate, especially if we are winning. He could be dangerous on the counter and could keep the ball late in the game to run down the clock (hardly exciting, but could be very effective)

Warnock often mentions our lack of physicality from set pieces so I think he will want us to sign some players to help provide that. At the top of the January wish list has got to be a physical, towering CB given our lack of depth there. Plus, for all of McNair and Fry’s positive attributes, none of them are naturally suited to scoring a good few goals a season from set pieces in the way that Ayala was capable of in his prime. I suppose Grant Hall could be that sort of CB for us if we can keep him fit. If we can keep him fit and sign another CB in that style then I think Warnock would feel more comfortable about that weakness within our squad. It would also allow us to play with Warnock’s preferred formation of a back 4 more often.

A target man striker would also be on our wish list in an ideal world, but I think Warnock knows he already has lots of good quality strikers - though not specialist target men like Kieffer Moore - so will probably be satisfied with Fletcher, Assombalonga and Akpom. If there is any budget to spend then I think Warnock would prefer spending it elsewhere.

I’m sure behind the scenes we’ll be trying our very best to get Fletcher and Assombalonga to sign new contracts as they’ll both be able to leave on free transfers at the end of the season. Fletcher’s injury is probably a good thing for us in terms of lowering his wage demands to renew his contract. Warnock seems to have laid out the red carpet to try to convince Assombalonga to renew his deal here by giving him the captain’s armband and praising him at every opportunity. Hopefully Warnock’s man management can convince them two to sign new contracts here as we’ll be a far weaker team without them.

I hope we reignite our interest in Bolasie, especially if we can get him in early so that we don’t take it down to the wire again.

After four seasons of watching our recruitment team resembling headless chickens, I feel in a strange position to be content with how we will approach the January window as I have so much faith in Warnock to make the right transfer decisions, even on a tight budget.

I don't think we could remotely afford to renew Fletcher's or Assombalonga's contracts. The ideal would have been to have sold both in the summer and offload them from the wage bill and bring in some cash which is probably one of the reasons that we are now running with such a small squad. Covid stuffed a lot of deals in the summer all over Football and will continue to do so again in January unless there is the magic vaccine available and it shows credible signs to be on the wane Globally.

With contracts expiring the value of the pair of them now is virtually worthless. To me the only reason in making Britt captain was to try and lift his seemingly morose attitude and confidence and who knows maybe add to his attractiveness to a potential suitor through being our Club Captain. Put simply I think NW just tried a lick of polish in a late effort for the shop window.

We could sign five players for the salary that those two are presently on and considering that neither has exactly set the Heather alight during their time here both will be considered a very poor investment. They have had short lived bursts of decent patches during their time here but they have been more often just average or below at best. How many times have they been considered as a Man of the Match for us compared to say, McNair or Howson or even the way Tavernier or Dijksteel are now come to that.

Truth is they can be replaced at much lower cost at better value for money, in other words more consistency and end product. Decent lads undoubtedly the pair of them but losing the small fortune we initially paid for them and then paid again in wages to get zero return is galling. Sometimes you have to walk away from the table rather than keep gambling and hoping.

It's worrying just how injury prone Roberts seems to be.

I know we knew that already, but he's only played twice since we signed him and he apparently didn't play on Saturday because his hamstrings were close to going.

Made of glass.
