That was all down to Pulis who I‚Äôm sure was still trying to keep the goal different down in a knockout match ūü§¶‚Äć‚ôāÔłŹ

It was once again our lack of balance as a side, which continues to be our issue. I am honestly not bothered about the individuals we sign, we just need a balanced united side for once.

We were never going to replace Traore, so whoever you compare him with will look bad but equally we just sign far too few wide players. I dont see the issue with having Marv in the squad though, I just dont think hes a great defender

Still couldnt beat Villa, where we were utter *** in both legs.

We ended up just over relying on him anyway

Yes I am sure we did over rely on him, but he was still a breath of fresh air.

We massively relied on him and even with him we were 1 wide player short, so what did we do?

Sold him and spent the money on 2 Centre Midfielders ūüėĄ¬†

Low scoring, laboured, boring, slow football ever since

We havent changed the squad and got a worse manager in, it was inevitable

Yup.  There seem to be some assumptions that, because M Johnson has re-signed, the intention is to play him at left back.  I'm not at all sure that's the case...

I'm not making that assumtion, hes a rubbish winger too. He played 9 games at left back for us. The other 59 appearances hes made at this level have been mostly as a winger with a handful of left wing back games. Hes scored 2 and assisted 5 in those appearances. He didn't have a particularly good record in league 1 or below either. Hes hitting 30. There's just nothing about him thats good enough for this level, regardless of position.

That was the season just gone, the Pulis one before it we had to endure after we sold Traore and signed no one to replace him

That 18/19 season felt worse than 19/20, even though we finished much higher

What some ppl forget...

Last 8 games was about surviving, not giving talented players game time...

Coulson will get his fair share of time, unless we sign a specialist left back..

We need squad players too & if you hadn't noticed, we are struggling to bring any fresh faces in (although everyone is struggling). He's a low risk, low cost player that Warnock thinks he can continue improving. If it doesn't work it's a one year deal and we move on, but for this season we need the bodies at the minimum.

You cant build a team around a left back thats for sure. So Warnock isn't gonna change his system that is proven just to accommodate Coulson.

I'm not sure I completely agree with the above.

I know we are not Liverpool, but Warnock has stated that he wants to play 433.

Liverpool's fullbacks, Alexander-Arnold and Roberson got 13 and 12 assists respectively last season, and that's the kind of input you need from fullbacks in a 433.  The DCM provides cover for attacking fullbacks.  Or should do.

Yes I get that those two full-backs exceptional...

But whats the point if we already know hes not good enough? Coulson is at about the same level for me at the moment. Tav does a good job out there. So the squad element is fulfilled on the left wing, we only needed one good left winger to sort that position - so unless you're happy with coulson or johnson as first choice wingers then I dont get the squad player argument.

Marv may not be the best footballer, but at least he gives all he can. In the last few games under Warnock, he was even one of our best outlets. Happy for him to be in the squad, he's deserved a new deal as far as I'm concerned. Worked hard and committed to the cause.

I do hope we get an upgrade also, obviously.

Neither Tav nor Coulson are wingers for me and we seem to disagree on whether he's good enough to play on the wing, anyway. Like I said, one of the best players start of this season before he got pulled back. Coulson is a left-back and I'm still not convinced any other way about that and Tav is completely wasted hugging the touchline.

    • I think people are getting carried away in believing NW will build a potential promotional squad next season,¬†were¬†as I believe he is employed to balance¬†the books with bargain bin players¬†for championship sustainability.¬† I don‚Äôt believe NW¬†signed to ensure promotion¬†only then to walk away if it was achieved, because¬†the squad would¬†need¬†to be rebuilt to maintain its position. Like I said I believe his¬†role is¬†to mop up and leave, which makes¬†sense simply because he is not building for the following season and has nothing to prove or answer for, he trots off into retirement, after balancing¬†the books with¬†¬†a team that can reasonably compete in a league the town can afford.¬†¬† ¬†
    • I have watched some higlights different angles from the first Swansea goal .. If the ball doesnt deflect off Spence .. It would be off target across the box
    • I agree with all that but I'm talking about next season rather than this one and the parameters that Warnock may have to work with¬†and in the context of some of the names and amount of new players being suggested on here generally. Not wishing to dampen the enthusiasm in any way but I think there will need to be a harsh new financial reality in football generally and with Boro in particular.¬† I'm speculating that ¬£12M is the absolute minimum wage bill but SG might be willing to find more funds. A full season without gate income at the Riverside, Bulkhaul hit by Brexit and the Hotel closed for the last 12 months will have had a significant hit. Out of the eleven mentioned, Bettenelli, McNair, Hall, Howson, Saville, Bolasie, Akpom, Fletcher, Kebano, Roberts and Assombalonga, six of them, (Bettenelli, Fletcher, Bolasie, Kebano, Roberts and Assombalonga) won't be there and if in the case of Fletcher for example is here it won't be¬†on the same terms. I'm guessing that Hall is nearer the ¬£10K a week purely from reports around the time of his transfer leaving just McNair, Howson and¬†Saville on the bigger salaries. How much we are contributing to Bolasie, Kebano and Bettenelli's wages at the minute I have no idea but it is probably eye watering.
