The Summer/Autumn transfers thread 2020 aka TURN DOWN FOR WHAT(more)

We’ve no idea on the price other than a headline figure from Greek media, we don’t know wages or anything like that. Let’s give the guy a chance.
I must be the only one that thinks a big fee and hefty wages on Roberts isn’t the best idea.

You’re not mate, I’m no fan of Roberts either.

If it is £3m for Akpom when his contract expires in less than 12 months, then we've been done like a kipper.

So I suspect it won’t be.

When you fail to sign one arsenal reject! Move on to the next. I swear someone at the club is running an old version of FM. Sanogo and now Akpom

Akpom doesnt have a poor injury record, scored recently against Ajax in the Champions League, 7 goals and 2 assists in 23 games and 6 goals and 4 assists in 20 the season before isnt exactly bad either.

The greek league isnt a bad one either, Wolves struggled past Olympiacos recently in the Europa League and PAOK beat Benfica yesterday

To put a positive spin, we’re signing a player who is clearly on the upward curve rather than downwards

Didnt Warnock say we will know by Wednesday? Maybe referring to fact his current club has a game last night. He also said said player wanted to come and reports suggest Akpom wants to come back to England.

If this is true then there must be one or two reasonably priced wingers or attacking midfielders out there to supply him with chances.

We are still left with the problem of whos going to supply them. It's hardly like Britt and Fletch have been spooning bag fulls of chances.

Thats always my biggest concern.

We could sign Gareth Bale but he won't get us (many) goals if our midfield isn't working properly.

It's a bit unsettling how bad his stats in England are, but I suppose he's still only 24 coming on 25.

I just think he's a strange choice for Warnock's main target (after losing out on his other main targets), especially when that fee would probably manage to get you a player with better figures.

Akpom seems to have come from nowhere.  Hopefully the fee is a lot lower than the speculated 3m.  And hopefully we aren't paying him silly wages!

Listen there are positives with Akpom, because he's English we'll probably always be able to get near enough our money back on him in a worst case and 2.5 million would get you nothing in the Championship/Prem so Warnock probably thinks it's ideal we've got an English striker in with European pedigree for a cheap price relative to domestic alternatives.

He looks like he has a good technique on the ball so the lamppost worries are set aside, he has a bit of pace and strength hopefully that's enough to work with. We might as well be positive about him considering he'll be the only striker contracted to the club next summer, hopefully it's a 4 year deal we sign him to.

He's a strong, direct and pacey lad but he lacks height maybe the loan striker will be for height rather than pace?

    • Oh dear mate. I have some bad news to tell you about Friend 🙁
    • With the amount of Subs now allowed I wouldn't be surprised if NW threw the gauntlet down to Roberts and Watmore after the Johnson and Spence cameos the other night and started with them again. With match fitness a question mark over both I would guess he would rather start with them and then plan to take them off when tiring rather than maybe having to put them on early as a Sub if an injury occurred. Warnock seems very protective of his players and the risk of them picking up injuries which is why I think he may start with Roberts and Watmore as it gives him more in-game control. The obvious choice would be if he started with those that finished on Wednesday night but I suspect he will want to keep morale high across the squad and keep faith in Watmore and Roberts knowing that he can fall back on Johnson and Spence. Whatever he goes with he has my confidence and trust which is something I don't think I have felt about a Boro Manager in a very long time.
    • I think its either Bettinelli's agent trying to rack up interest (which is his job in fairness)  or lazy journalism or more likely a combination of the two. Dimi had an incredible record here for clean sheets in a season but it was a similar story to now with the organisation of the defence resulting in the Keeper having little or nothing to do. No disrespect to Dimi but he was hardly the most athletic or agile Keeper I've ever seen in a Boro shirt, although no worse than the medal bedecked one who came in after him which proved how playing behind a good team can make a keeper look great. Most Keepers would do well behind the current Red barrier in front of them. Bettinelli's vocal skills does add to that sense of impenetrability probably as much if not more so than the actual amount of work he has to do keeping shots out. Decent keeper who I would prefer to stay but I would be more concerned about losing Dijksteel, Fry, McNair, Bola, Friend, Howson etc.
    • Barcelona first team players have a agreed to a paycut of £110 Million (per year). This is on top of the squad agreeing to defer £45 Million in bonuses. There was talk at the beginning of this month that if they couldn't cut around £150 Million off the wage bill for this season, that the threat of bankruptcy was very real.
    • As others have said, I would guess that the team that finished the derby game will likely start this fixture, with those who were subbed being introduced late on. The 5 subs rule allows us to comfortably rotate an entire attacking setup. Very useful if you have a good enough manager to utilise it.
