The Summer/Autumn transfers thread 2020 aka TURN DOWN FOR WHAT(more)

Recommended Posts

Newcastle have had a bid accepted for Norwich left back Jamal Lewis and last week were close to getting Arsenal CB Rob Holding in on loan too.

I know they play a wing back system but they got plenty of defenders if above two come in. Ciaran Clark could be a loan option? I assume he will want to play regularly to stand chance of make ROI squad.

Hi guys! PAOK fan here from Greece. You are getting a really hard worker in Akpom. He is a top lad and a good professional. When he first came, he was considered a bench player. It was the 2018-19 sea

Morsy nearly done

Williams fee nearly agreed. 1.75million rising to 2.5 (So 1.75 then 😂).

Bola got caught out with high balls over the top when he was playing LB last season, he’s not a CB in any way, shape or form. If we need a left sided CB we should probably have done more to keep George, but it feels like Warnock has only really just decided to go three at the back because of lack of signings.
Im excited to see if Wood gets a chance this season, he is very impressive.

George isn't even a CB, we would have been mad to compete with the contract they offered him

I really cant believe people are suggesting Grant Hall should be dropped after his 1st game in 6 months. The level of impatience in todays world is bonkers at times.

I never saw last night and wasn't judging Hall by that, I'd just rather see our youth get game time to develop.

Also, (and this isnt aimed at you TLF10 but someone else has mentioned it and I don't know how to quote two separate posts) I never suggested Bola was the answer, just that we need someone who can play more comfortable on that side and he could maybe do a job, and could quite possible come good. Do I think it would be better to buy a specialist? Of course, but we may have to make do with what we have if we can't land our targets and would you prefer to have Fry at LCB all season?

It's definitely looking like getting a dedicated defensive mid is a priority. Would be the case if we switched to 4-3-3 aswell.

That along with Tav should be automatic choices in the midfield 3 along with whoever is playing the least crap out of McNair, Saville, Wing or Howson.

I just hope we can keep hold of the ball a little bit more because when we do keep it on the ground and build attacks we play some neat stuff. Then it will relive the pressure on the defence if it's constantly coming back.

It's going to be about getting it forward quickly, winning second balls and getting crosses and shots in. I can cope with that.

Saville will sit deep with the centre Half's and let the wing backs pile forward. Tav and Howson hanging round for the scrappy balls on the edge of the box.

There will be goals and the back will be cool when playing proper games I reckon.

So far Warnock has played Howson deep and Saville further forward.. Which is the better option IMO, Howson has legs to get side to side for cover.

I think Warnock hinted when talking about Wood that we are in fact targeting a CB actively contradicting the CM/2xST/GK only narrative from the day before but I don't think we'll go for a high profile Prem player because right now he likes Dijksteel/Hall and will want Fry up to speed as the third starter whoever comes in will probably have to bide their time makes sense to get a lower profile player in.

The Nat Phillips link is interesting he could be perfect he has the height we need and has a reputation as a great passer whether we get him ahead of Bristol and Blackburn I don't know.

My main worry about Bola, and I like him more than most, is people just climb on him when it's launched to his side whether it's at the backpost or a crossfield diagonal Johnson at least has a bit of height about him even if he's not the best defender.

having watch the highlights from last night, I think we’re crying out for someone like Sam Morsy to give a bit of a screen in front of the back 3.

This is why I thought Saville might do that role. He's tougher than Howson. Of the players we have he would be my choice.

Strangely McNair seems the odd man out. Where is he going to end up playing I wonder. Both in terms of club and position.

I would be chuffed to bits if Dijksteel ended up playing on the right of CB with Spence as RWB. That pair could make a brilliant unit. Similar to how Sheff United play. It may be a pipe dream but the basics are there.

I thought Hall actually started the game well and looked good, up until he spooned the ball straight out of play for a throwing.

He did struggle as the 2nd Half progressed, but we were wide open and the defence weren't getting any protection. He wasn't helped by the Fry fading out of the game, probably due to lack of fitness, so was further exposed.

Actually thought Wood for Fry could have been made earlier, but Wood is still very young and Warnock won't want to over expose him until the team have a bit more experience (new signings as well as Saville and McNair back).

I don't think McNair can play CB. When I've seen him play there he just looks halfhearted. Doesn't want to throw himself in there.

My 12 year-old spotted Hall doing the dirty stuff well last night. That's what we need in there. And is exactly what Warnock wanted.

When McNair had to play in the middle of the back 3 for Woodgate last season, he was actually really good. He swept up so many times and he's solid in the air too.

1-on-1 with defenders probably not great but then if we come back to Hall, he couldn't get to grips with the Shrewsbury forwards in that regard either. Him and Fry dealt with a lot of the aerial stuff but Shrewsbury played a lot along the floor and their third goal in particular showed how vulnerable we were to that kind of attack.
