Maybe the reason we never heard from Gibson is because he wanted to know more about how this was going to trickle down from the ESL to smaller clubs. There seemed to be absolutely no clarification on that from the proposals for the ESL, I think Perez in his interview said something along the lines of "Let us get the money first then we can help". Which has always worked throughout history, right? Perez actually hinted in his interview that the trickle down would be because the big bois could pay more for smaller teams' players. Absolute clown. 1

Not likely. At the moment Woody is just proving he's the Championship version of Guardiola. I think Gibson is at least savvy enough to realise he needs a manager that can still do well with an average squad.
Neverbefore 10,940
The thing with woody is that he has the players the play exactly how he envisioned us playing now. He didn't have them here, was dealing with a long term negative squad and didn't have a plan b. I do feel sorry for him for his time here, would have been tough for any manager.

Agree with you here NB4 and I am sure he will have has some positive input when things slipped for a while. He is probably much better now in his role and well certainly more experienced

We don't have a good squad and we don't have the finances to build a good squad.
ManBearPig 1,853
Woodgate has a cushty job now and fell on his feet with Tindall being sacked. Did he make us better when he was in control of the training plan and team sheet? No. The football was dreadful and we had no pattern of play in any sense of the word. A good coach can assess his squad and adapt to get the best out of the players at his disposal. With us he didn’t do that but a Bournemouth team littered with better players, it’s criminal if he doesn’t get them up anyway 🤷🏻♂️
p_mards 1,365
In an ideal world, when Warnock leaves we should go in the direction of Norwich with a Sporting Director who controls the footballing operations. However, as that involves Steve Gibson giving upon decision-making power and embracing the modern ways of football, I can't imagine that's going to happen whilst he remains our owner. History suggests that when Warnock leaves we're going to knee-jerk into a completely different direction, and perform even worse on the pitch before we knee-jerk into the previous direction. Whilst Warnock keeping on as a psuedo Director of Football/Sporting Director would surely be preferable to Steve Gibson making decisions alone, it's still a backwards, 1990's approach to football which we keep us struggling to catch the coat tails of smaller clubs that are ran far more efficiently like Brentford, Swansea, Norwich, Barnsley etc. We've now slid so far behind so many smaller clubs even since relegation in 2017. It's comical on face value to think how much Barnsley have overtaken us. Barnsley's new owner Chien Lee has embraced modern football, and even got Moneyball data and statistics supremo Billy Beane involved behind the scenes, so their huge success this season is well deserved. It wouldn't surprise me to now see Barnsley regularly being above us in the table. As Steve Gibson is going nowhere and is absolutely incapable of delegating power to a genuine Director of Football to embrace modern football, any likely solution for when Warnock leaves is going to be contrary to what all the modern, innovative, forward-thinking clubs would do. The bigger question is: how long are we going to let Steve Gibson's deeply conservative, 1990's approach to football prevent us from reaching our potential? I suppose it will probably be when even more smaller clubs have overtaken us. Edited April 24, 2021 by p_mards
p_mards 1,365
Yet another great write up about Norwich City being incredibly well run off the pitch: https://www.skysports.com/football/story-telling/11095/12280448/how-norwich-built-the-team-to-get-straight-back-to-the-premier-league 1

Head Coach...Sporting Director...Head of Recruitment... Doesn't mention anything about a chairman. I'm sure its not the only way to run a successful football club these days, but it does highlight the need for specialist knowledge in different fields. None of which Gibson or his cronies appear to have. Also this... Quote Farke, Webber and Scott - the trio responsible for the club’s decisions in the transfer market - identified that, while the team were technically good, even excelling in certain positions, they lacked the athleticism – the strength, the pace, the power – to make it in the top division. With a quick turnaround to the next season, they would need to act fast to rectify the problem, and what that terrible run gave them was time to get a head start on their rivals. Before the season had even finished on July 26, they had identified targets, negotiated several deals, and had three new players through the door. Can you imagine Boro managing to do anything like this with our current set-up? Almost makes you want to cry, doesn't it?

On the bright side mate, we've got Neil on the phone to a few agents he knows trying to sort out a few hand-shakes before summer. Swings and roundabouts! 1
