FAC 3rd round  - Boro flashback 11th January 1983

FAC replay which depending how you look at it from a Boro point of view, in staurdays cup tie (3 days previous, yes cup matches back then were more or less completed within a week, including replays) at the teams walked off at HT Boro were winning 2-0, by full time Bishop Stortford had fought back to level the score at 2-2 & only one winner looked on the cards then the ref blowing the whistle for full time & Boro fighting another day

The match kicked off & the replay seemed to go Stortfords way, taking a 1-0 lead & going in at half time on the up, & a shock on the cards!

Dave Shearer had other ideas & 2 goals from the Scottish striker to win the game & take us through to the 4th round to face Notts County at home

Shearers 1st goal running on to a pass in the box to bring the scores level, the 2nd was immense skill, bringing the ball under control in the box, dragging it back & placing it past the despairing keeper & we were through

Boro flashback - This day 7th January 1984

One of the great cup ties from a dark era

Boro 3 Arsenal 2

After going out to Arsenal 3-2 in a 5th round replay the previous season at Highbury after drawing 1-1 at Ayresome Park, we were again drawn at home to Arsenal & Charlie Nicholas, IIRC his 1st FAC game

The mighty Boro had beaten Arsenal's London rivals Chelsea 2-1 a few days before in a 2nd division clash & were up for this 3rd cup match

Boro gained sweet revenge for last season cup exit in North London running out 3-2 winners in an exciting cup tie that had everything

Gary MacDonald scored his 3rd of the season & 5th of his Boro career, MOTM Paul Sugrue, scored his 1st of the season & 4th for the Boro to date & a fantastic bullet header & winner from the late Mick Baxter

Boro were awarded a corner at the famous holgate end, I can still see it to this day from my position in the chicken run, Mick Baxter made his way in to the box & waited for the corner to make his move, Paul Sugrue swung in a corner from the right & Mick Baxter rose above everyone & thundered a header in the roof of the Arsenal net to score our 3rd & the winning goal, it was Micks 6th Boro career goal, his 1st of the season, he scored his 1st home goal against Arsenal in 1982 & scored his final home goal against Arsenal

For all 3 Boro players who scored this day back in 1984 it was their 1st FAC goal for the mighty Boro

I loved the shirt they wore that season

Boro flashback - This day, 13th January 1973 FAC 3rd round

Boro flashback - This day, 13th January 1973 FAC 3rd round

Plymouth 1 Boro 0

Stan Anderson considered his Boro future after this defeat to 3rd divison Plymouth, with one win since 2nd december Stan had the weekend to consider his position on whether to stay as manager of the Boro, & if so, a sad ending to a good managers reign & the 1st Boro manager for me following the Boro.

He had put together a very good team, brought in some excellent signings, including my favourite player of all time, John Hickton & introduced some brilliant youngsters through the ranks, Willie Maddren, David Mills, David Armstrong, he had transformed the mighty Boro from a relegated team to a team constantly knocking on the door to win promotion to the 1st division, now PL

Stan signed for the Boro from Newcastle in November 1965 as a player coach, the 1st such role in Boro's history, he then went on to become the 1st player to represent & captain all 3 north east teams, making his debut at Cardiff on November 4th in a 4 -3 defeat, January 1st seen him score his 1st goal in a 4-1 defeat at Rotherham & by April 66, with the team struggling & heading for the 3rd division, he was offered the position as manager & was appointed manager of the Boro, unfortunatly Stan couldn't halt the slide in to the 3rd divison for the 1st time in our history

Stan got the Boro promoted at the 1st attempt & in the following 5 seasons had us finishing, 6th, 4th, 4th, 7th & his final full season 9th, this was long before the playoffs were even thought of
Stan had proved to be a very good manager, good football, cracking FAC runs, with victories over Man Utd & West Ham, the Ayresome Angels supporters on the terraces from 66 had come & gone though Stan had one thing that never left him, his eye for a good player, John Hickton, Hughie Mcllmoyle, Willie Whigham, John Craggs, record signing Jonny Crossen, 6 foot 2 eye of blue Stuey Boam is after you, world cup winner Nobby Stiles & the introduction of Willie Maddren to eventually play alongside Boam as the telepathic twins, Jim Platt etc, etc, some of these players including his final 2 signing, Alan Foggon & Graeme Souness. who again, proved to be a master stroke for the incoming manager to take on & inherit a quality team ........big Jack come on in

Jim Platt  - Debut October 1971                                                                                                                                                                                                                             John Craggs - Signed by Stan August 1971                                                                                                                                                                                                             Gordon Jones                                                                                                                                                                                                              Nobby Stiles - Signed by Stan summer of 1971                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Stuey Boam - Signed by Stan summer of 1971                                                                                                                                                                     Willie Maddren - Scoring debut 12th April 1969                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Eric McMordie                                                                                                                                                                                                                         John Hickton - Signed by Stan scoring debut 24th September 1966                                                                                                                                                                                                                             David Mills - Full debut 12th April 1969                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Graeme Souness - Final signing by Stan, debut 6th January 1972                                                                                                                                                                                                          Alan Foggon - 2nd final signing by Stan, debut 25th November 1972                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Sub - Malcolm Smith

Absolutely chucked it down that day and one of those games that we never looked up for.....not the happiest journey home and I think it was the writing on the wall for Jones, Stiles and McMordie...they seemed to lose their influence on games that season, maybe just age but Jack replaced them pretty quickly...(or maybe Shep)....didn't help that I worked with a couple of Weardo's that season either

Stan was Boro's 15th manager, he stayed for one more game the QPR home game which ended 0-0, it was Graeme Souness's debut, wearing No11

Harold Shepherdson took over as caretaker v Carlisle with a record of 15 games, won 8, drew 4 lost 3 biggest loss a 4-0 defeat coming at Sunderland

We went on to win our final 4 games & finishing 4th in the league, John Hickton scoring his final Boro hat trick on the final game of the season v Orient

Boro flashback - 14th January 1978

Ten out of ten & one for neatness says the commentator

Boro went to St James on the back of an excellent 3-0 FAC 3rd round home win over Coventry the previous saturday but in the league we're looking for our 1st win since the 17th december when we beat Villa 1-0 & our 1st win on the road since 12th November, John Neal was in the early stages as manager with his team building needs to find some consistency in his players hes inherited, minus Graeme Souness who had recently departed to Liverpool

Boro won this game 4-2 with a double from Billy Ashcroft with his 3rd & 4th goals of the season & his 1st Boro goals on his travels, in between Billys goals, Stuey Boam started the rout with his 1st of the season & Stan Cummins with his 3rd of the season

Really enjoyed Stan's goal...one of those players that will always be an "if only" as regards potential but size and injuries (and chairman) meant that we were always going to cash in on him at some point...Billy was a decent lad but always looked like he was playing at a level above the standard he would be comfortable at...still beating Skunks on home ground is always good

Yes I did like Cummins, I was 18 at the time we sold him & I was gutted

I remember coming home from work  & seen the gazette headlines on a gazette board, 'Boro sell star' or something to that affect, we knew he was going but to see it in print was reality that he'd gone
