Flashback/On this Day Erimus74 & McMordie

Recommended Posts

A big game tomorrow, a game we have to win which could get us closer to the safety points needed for survival

2 blast from the past games v Luton, one when Tony McAndrew made his Boro debut standing in wearing the No4 shirt, for the  greatest Boro player, IMHO, Graeme Souness & our last match at AP v Luton

Boro flashback 15th February 1977 & one of the quickest goals scored at Ayrssome Park when Arsenal arrived for this Tuesday night 1st division fixture

Arsenal's 1st visit to face the Boro inside a week when facing the Boro again at AP for the upcoming, mouth watering FAC 5th round tie

But 1st Boro had to face the might of the Gunners, 10 days after seeing off their North London rivals Spurs 2-0

The Arsenal fixture started off at a blistering pace when Peter Brine scored after 20 seconds to put us 1-0 up for his 1st goal of the season & his 7th career goal to date

Davey Armstrong scored the 2nd for his 8th goal of the season & David Mills scored our 3rd & 10 th of the season, setting himself up nicely for the weekend

Tge vast majority of the 26,083 went home hoping the coming Saturday Boro can repeat tonight's rssukt

Supermac told the tabloids it'll be a different Arsenal that turn up for the Cup match, well time will tell

Boro flashback - 21st February 1981

Boro 3 Stoke City 1

A brace from Bosco Jankovic, one a penalty, a 1st for Bosco with his 8th & 9th goals of the season & a Terry Cochrane strike, his 1st goal of the season, resulting in both points staying on Teesside 👍

A disapointing low crowd of 15,142 was a bit of a concern for John Neal & the excellent, young, exciting team he was putting together, especially with us going so well in the FAC at that moment, maybe they were saving up for wembley 😪

Boro flashback 1st March 1975

Boro 2 Stoke City 0

Going in to this fixture the Boro have now gone 7 games in the league without a victory to our name, with not a single league victory this calander year, although we are going well (so far) in the FAC, its the league which is concerning big jack & the lack of goalscoring that has him frustrated him

During the 7 winless games we have managed to score just 2 goals, with only one coming in 1975

The last time Stoke arrived at Ayresome Park on the 6th November 1973 with an attendance of 26,088  in the ground to see a 3rd round league cup replay between big Jacks 2nd divison champions Boro & 1st divison Stoke, after drawing 0-0 at the Victoria ground it was back to APAfter extra time Stoke won the cup tie 2-1 but now this fixture was between two teams in the on the same level & for the visit of Stoke City the Ayresome Park attendance of 25,766 was slightly down on the previous meeting but the outcome was different with the mighty Boro running out winners to claim our 1st points since boxing day with John Hickton scoring his 6th goal of the season & Alan Foggon with his 13th goal of the season, to make sure both points stayed on Teesside & bring a smile to big Jacks face

Normal service was resumed!?

Although goalscoring was the big issue Jack had to try & resolve, he was in negotiations in bringing a quality player in other areas of the field & we were on the verge of signing one of the best attacking full backs in my time following the Boro

This day 3rd March 1979 the mighty Boro travelled to Molineux & came away with a 3-1 win, 2 points heading back to Teesside

John Neals team had failed to win a game in the calander year & remarkably since thrashing Chelsea 7-2 in december  we've played 6 games upto the Wolves game, losing 3, drawing 3, not looking good

Goals by Billy Ashcroft his 3rd of the season, Tony McAndrew with his 1st league goal since scoring the only goal in the win over Coventry City on the opening day 76-77 season, his 5 Boro career goal to date & substitiute David Shearer with his 1st of the season, his 3rd in total after scoring 2 on his debut last season v Chelsea

Do you mean you want me to post a match thread, or contributing a thread, we've lost both match threads I've posted

It is your turn to author the match day thread again, I know it seems to come round quickly at the moment and you are not alone in losing your thread.

Hopefully you will be able to organise the thread by Thursday?

Title it Boro V Charlton (A)

This day back in 1990 the mighty Boro drew recorded their biggest crowd of the season

1989-90 was a season of struggle, after smashing Wolves 4-2 on the day of the season we sort of fell away, winning one, losing a few was the way our season was going

The West Ham game, this day 3rd March 1990, drew the biggest crowd for the simple reason, whoever attended this 2nd divison match will be guarenteed a ticket for the upcoming Zenith data systems cup final at Wembley on the 30th March

With a healthy attendance of 23,617 Julian *** scored the only goal of the game, Boro were struggling in the league & with the the last 4 results since our last win a month earlier reading, drew one, lost 3
