Boro 2 Leicester City 1

An impressive win for Boro against a Leicester City side that was widely expected to challenge for promotion. Boro took the initiative early on and never allowed the visitors to get a foothold in the game until some late jitters.

John Hickton was particularly prominent, scoring one and denied a hat trick by two superb saves by Peter Shilton. The first came after 6 minutes when he tipped a header over the bar. Boro got the breakthrough on 24 minutes, when Laidlaw steered the ball just inside the post and Hickton fired just wide shortly before half time.

Boro continued to dominate after the break and doubled their advantage after 47 minutes, a flowing three man move setting up Hickton to head home. He then had another shot tipped round the post by Shilton before Boro were denied a penalty on 73 minutes when a defender appeared to block a goal bound shot on the line with his arm.

Against the run of play, Leicester pulled a goal back five minutes from time through Lochhead, setting up a nervous final few minutes, but overall Boro were very good value for the win.

The points came at some cost, with Dave Chadwick and Alec Smith both likely to miss the Monday evening trip to Millwall after picking up knocks.

Boro - Short, A. Smith, Jones, G. Smith, Gates, Spraggon, McMordie, Kear, Laidlaw, Hickton, Chadwick  Sub - Lugg

Leicester City - Shilton, Rodrigues, Houghton, Nish, Sjoberg, Cross, Glover, Fern, Lochhead, Gibson, Manley  Sub - Roberts

In the news - Prime Minister Harold Wilson interrupted his holiday in the Scilly Isles to fly back to London for discussions about a growing crisis in Northern Ireland after Ulster Premier Major James Chichester-Clark refused to accept any Catholics into his government, tension too in Asia after North Korea shot down a US helicopter, the longest surviving heart transplant patient died 20 months after his operation and police in the north east were hunting a group of vandals after several bowling greens were dug up.

Top of the charts - Honky Tonk Women by the Rolling Stones.

Boro flashback

This day 27th August 1977

Boro 2 Newcastle 0

Big Jack had left & replaced by a gentle, talking geordie who had successfully managed a 3rd division outfit & managed em well, taking them in to europe

We shouldn't have had any doubts about John Neal, I loved his term as manager, an excellent Boro manager, who completely changed the way we played as we became a very good, young exciting & attacking team, who at home scored loads of goals, our away record, the way we set ourselves up, should have been altered, which, IMHO, would have had us challenging the best teams in the then 1st division

27th August Boro legend Willie Maddren played his last game at Ayresome Park with a 2-0 win against Newcastle, Tommy Craig had a penalty saved by Jim Platt, Davey Armstrong scoring both Boros goals that day, we even had a dog on the pitch, which was caught & taken off down the tunnel by Tony Mac, the Boro team that day:

Jim Platt

John Craggs

Terry Cooper

Peter Brine

Stuey Boam

Willie Maddren

John Mahoney

David Mills.

Billy Woof

Ton McAndrew

David Armstrong

Sub, John Hickton

GS: Davey Armstrong 2

Att: 26,902, including me & our Kev in the holgate end, plus a dog running on the pitch

RIP Joh Neal your time with us was brilliant

Boro flashback

This day 6th September 1983

Boro's 2nd home game of the season & 2nd on the bounce at home after drawing with Leeds at Ayresome Park on the previous Saturday with 2 goals from Dave Currie, Newcastle were the visitors for this Tuesday night fixture, they had some big names for this fixture & a certain David Mills, who they had just signed from Sheff Weds Dave Currie carried on where he left off with another double including an opening goal, top drawer cracker

We scored, they equalised, we scored, Millsy equalised then 17 years old Gary Hamilton came on as sub & with the game in the final minutes he smashed the winner in to the holgate net, 3-2 to the mighty Boro, racing over towards the chicken run where we were stood, arm raised in the air in triumph, a legend was born

I don't think we lost when Gary Hamilton scored for the Boro

Boro flashback & a day many of us who are old enough to remember thought this day would not happen, the mighty Boro were playing 'our' 1st real home game after coming through the awful summer of 1986 when the whole future of our fantastic football club was in the balance, yes we played Port Vale in the opening fixture of the season at home ( Hartlepool)

The day the 6th September 1986, when an attendance at Ayresome Park of 6,499 seen the Boro defeat Bury by 3 goals to one, with a brace from Archie Stephens & a Bernie strike

Two win out of the 1st 3 games is good in anyone's book, but when you take in to account we'd had no practise matches, friendlies, or a ground to train on, then it showed the spirit, togetherness, the desire & the skill within the team, in what was to be an unforgettable season

My boss just sent me this autograph, apparently from June 25th 1937, I can't place it at all from anyone who was supposedly in either squad at that time, was wondering if anybody here had any idea!

It was probably a friendly so I guess it could have been anybody, it kind of looks like a Jack H******y?

Doesn't sound right to me, mate.  June 25th?  I'd be surprised if we played a game in June.  Even a quick look at the recorded friendlies doesn't show one against Southampton and I'd be surprised if we played a friendly against them back in '37, given the travel involved.
