Flashback to this day 1976 when a famous top footballer came out with a statement after the mighty Boro's telepathic twins Boam & Maddren didnt give him any space or time to cause any damage

Kevin Keegan threw his toys out of the pram by saying after a goaless draw at Anfield, 'I'd rather go shopping with the missus on a saturday than play against Boro's tactics'

Yea thats fine Kevin, we'll just let you run around the field & score at will, after the Liverpool game we'd only conceded 3 goals in 8 games & two of those were in one game

I was there that day after travelling alone from uni at Leeds. Mistook the entrances and found myself on the kop. Kept quiet until Mills tripped up over the ball whilst on a rare attack. The Liverpool fans soon sussed I was a Boro fan and were really friendly to me all during the game. Probably out of pity.

5 October 1974 - Middlesbrough 2 Wolverhampton Wanderers 1.

This was the first league meeting between Boro and Wolves for 21 years and got off to a good start when David Mills set up John Hickton for the opening goal after 10 minutes.

Boro dominated the first half without adding to their lead and Wolves came back strongly after the interval. Bobby Murdoch came off after 57 minutes, apparently having difficulty breathing after suffering all week from a heavy cold. He was replaced by young striker Alan Willey as Hickton again showed his versatility. Having been restored to the attack for this game after covering as an emergency left back for most of the season he dropped back into Murdoch's midfield role, leaving Willey and Mills as the strike force.

Wolves drew level on the hour through Derek Dougan. Having himself come on as a substitute in the first half when Steve Kindon pulled his hamstring, he turned past Frank Spraggon and curled a superb shot past Jim Platt from 20 yards.

At that point Wolves looked the most likely winners but it was Boro who roused themselves to find the moment to take both points as Willey scored his first ever league goal after 76 minutes.

I probably don't need to list the Boro team, but for the record it was:

Platt, Craggs, Spaggon, Souness, Boam, Maddren, Murdoch (Willey), Mills, Hickton, Foggon, Armstrong.

Wolves - Parkes, Palmer, Parkin, Bailey, Jefferson, McAlle, Hibbitt, Sunderland, Richards, Daley, Kindon (Dougan).

The win lifted Boro into 5th place in the First Division, three points behind leaders Ipswich Town.

Elsewhere, Newcastle drew 1-1 at Everton and were 7th, level on points with Boro. Sunderland best Oxford United 2-0 at Roker Park and were 2nd in the Second Division, three points behind leaders Manchester United, who won 2-1 at Fulham. York City were 9th in the Second Division after losing 2-0 at West Brom (yes, young readers - Manchester United and York City together in the second tier). In the Fourth Division, a Darlington side including former Boro stalwart Gordon Jones lost 4-2 at Mansfield Town and Hartlepool won 1-0 sat Shrewsbury, Despite the win both they and the Quakers were in the bottom 5.

In the Northern League, South Bank snatched a 2-2 draw at Durham with a last minute penalty from Cunningham while late goals from Bromfield and Hetherington helped Billingham Synthonia to a 3-1 win at West Auckland. Tow Law suffered a surprise defeat in the FA Cup, 4-0 at home to Ashington, while Bishop Auckland scored with the last kick of their match at Whitley Bay to rescue a 2-2 draw and a replay.

In the news - a ship full of dynamite was adrift and on fire in the English Channel, North East bus drivers and conductors were on the brink of a series of one day a week strikes over demands for a shorter working week and farmers were demanding Government action over cheap meat imports.

Carl Douglas was top of the UK Singles Chart with Kung Fu Fighting.

October 6th 1973 - Swindon Town 0 Middlesbrough 1

Boro warmed up for their League Cup tie against First Division strugglers Manchester United at Old Trafford by extending their lead at the top of the Second Division to 2 points with a 1-0 win at Swindon.

In a dour match in driving rain they had Jim Platt to thank for a couple of outstanding saves before winning the match 18 minutes from time. A dummy by Hickton took away a defender allowed a cross to run into the path of Murdoch, who drove the ball home. Jack Charlton was named Manager of the Month for September before the game.

Swindon - Allan, Thomas, Trollope, Butler, Burrows, Potter (Syrett), Moss, Bunkell, Treacy, Collins, Jenkins.

Boro - Platt, Craggs, Spraggon, Souness, Boam, Maddren, Murdoch, Smith, Hickton, Foggon, Armstrong. Unused sub - Gates).

Att - 6787

Elsewhere, Boro were 2 points ahead of Fulham, who dropped a point in a 0-0 draw at home to PNE. Forest were third after a 3-0 home win over Millwall. Sunderland beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 at Roker Park and were 9th, five points behind Boro but with 2 games in hand. Leeds were top of the First Division despite being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Stoke City, while Newcastle lost 2-1 at Liverpool. Darlington were bottom of the league with 5 points from 10 games after drawing 1-1 at home to Rotherham, while Hartlepool were two points and three places better off after a 0-0 home draw against Colchester United. South Bank were bottom of the Northern League after losing 3-1 to Penrith.

In the news - Shadow Education Secretary Roy Hattersley pledged that the next Labour Government would outlaw private schools, Israel claimed to have repelled a large Egyptian invasion force and Iraq nationalised and seized the assets of two US Oil Companies.

I  was interested to see that Bill Gates was the substitute at Swindon as I'd have guessed he'd left Boro by then. When did he go Erimus?

He had his testimonial the folliwing May at home to Leeds, retired &  started his sporting business in the town

Quiz question - Why did Boro's players throw signed footballs into the crowd and hand our flowers and chocolates to female supporters before the Wolves game mentioned above?

Didn’t get paid as much in those days so it was harder for them to pull? 🙂

Some kind of ladies day perhaps to encourage more women to come to games?

Cheers Erimus. I always appreciate it when you put up the reports from the Sports Gazette having regrettably thrown mine away years ago,

Good point about Bill Gates' testimonial - how could I forget the battle of the champions!

Boro Flashforward - 16th October 2021

Middlesbrough 2 Peterborough United 3

A dramatic day at the Riverside as Boro parted company with Neil Warnock after throwing away a two goal lead to slump to a 3-2 defeat to the other Boro. It was a particularly disappointing result given that Peterborough had to field their under 16 team after their first team coach ran out of petrol on the journey north and they couldn't find a petrol station that was open to refuel.

All seemed good for Boro as they raced into a two goal lead in the opening two minutes. Joe Lumley got the first after chasing his own goal kick down the pitch and scoring with a diving header. From the kick off, Boro regained possession and Isiah Jones dribbled past 16 Peterborough defenders before slicing his cross into the roof of the net for number two.

What appeared to be a routine Boro win turned on a controversial penalty decision just before the interval when Lumley was penalised for handling the ball in his own penalty area. The referee later explained that he had assumed that Lumley was an outfield player from his earlier goal and apologised for booking him for wearing the wrong colour kit. An apoplectic Neil Warnock was red carded for his protests but delegated the sending off to Leo Perkovic, who made his way to the stands.

The 2-1 scoreline made for a tense second half but Boro held on to their lead until the 96th minute, when Paddy McNair thrashed an 80 yard back pass into his own net, overlooking the fact that Joe Lumley had come forward for a corner, possibly unwisely in the circumstances.

Seconds later Boro's misery was complete as an innocuous shot which Lumley appeared to have covered took a deflection off a plastic bottle which a disgruntled Boro fan had thrown onto the pitch and nestled in the corner of the net.

After the match Boro released a statement saying:

"Middlesbrough Football Club can confirm that it has parted company with manager Neil Warnock by mutual consent. We would like to place on record our gratitude to Neil for his efforts during his time here and wish him well for the remaining 7 months of his career. The club is delighted to announce that the position as Neil's successor as first team manager has been accepted by former Leeds United boss Kevin Blackwell."
