This day 1900 - FAC day

We won our 2nd FAC match as a league club when gaining revenge on Jarrow 3-0 in the Q2

The previous season, our debut league season (1899-1900) Jarrow had beaten us 2-1 our 1st FAC as a league club

This season was our 4th FAC matches, due to the nighty Boro needing 3 games to beat Willington Athletic in Q1

Boro flashback

This day 24th November 1990

Oxford United 2 Boro 5

Boro enjoyed one of their biggest away wins for a few years when when Ian Baird bagged a hattrick & Mr reliable Bernie Slaven & Robbie Mustoe making his 1st return to his former employers grabbed a goal each

After successful beating Portsmouth 3-0 in our previous game away we went on another goal bonanza at the Manor ground

Ian Baird became the 47th different Boro player to score a 1st team compel HT, when he scored his one & only Boro 1st team HT, our 33rd away & 125th in total

Manager Colin Todd, who must have been pulling his hair out as his team scored goals away from home, yet struggldd at home that season, picked the following team

Stephen Pears

Colin Cooper

Jimmy Phillips

Tony Mowbray

Alan Kernaghan

John Wark

Bernie Slaven

Robbie Mustoe

Ian Baird

Paul Kerr

John Hendrie

Craig Hignett made his Boro debut this day 1992

Boro paid Crewe £400k for the signature of Craig Hignett a product of their very good youth academy

When manager Lennie Lawrence gave Craig his debut wearing the No8 shirt, away to Oldham he was registered No612, Craig replacing Jamie Pollock who dropped down to the subs bench, No12

Gary Parkinson started his 2nd game of the season, his previous game he wore No2 home to Ipswich

We suffered a 4-1 thumping, Willie Falconer scoring our consolation goal

For me this was the beginning of our fall down the PL table, resulting in relegation

Blast from the past, this week 1986

29/11/1986

Boro 1 Chester 2

Going into this third division fixture at Ayresome Park the Boro were unbeaten in 5 games, zero goals conceded in the previous 4 games, which included 2 consecutive away wins on the bounce, the Boro must have been full of confidence going in to this match but a bit surprised with a drop in the attendance of 716 fans from 10,092 to 9,376, for this home fixture & our 1st ever meeting against Chester City

On the game itself, Bernie put the Boro 1-0 up for his 6th goal of the season but Chester didn't lay down & fought to, not only equalise, but go infront when scoring twice, it remained this way with Chester victoriou,s, recording the 1st league meeting between the 2 sides with a victory over the mighty Boro

This was our 2nd home defeat & 3rd defeat in total so far this campaign, which, considering the players have had no pre-season matches only training in local parks, it showed the strength of the players to keep fit & sharp during the coming season & quite remarkable & the testing ability of Bruce Rioch & his 14 players to get to the end of November only 3 defeats, top of the league & still in the FAC

This day 1974 wembley beckons for the mighty Boro, but...........................

With Wembley on the horizon, home night match under the floodlights, history in the making, one step & it's the sight of the twin towers in the distance

League cup 5th round, Man Utd are the visitors to Ayresome Park, a team we have crossed swords with a few times in the 70's

Boro must start favourites in this tie, especially after defeating Liverpool at Anfield in the previous round 1-0 with a goal from the late, great Willie Maddren

A massive attendance of 36,005 seen a good cup tie with Alex Stepney playing a blinder in the United goal to be the score at 0-0 & a replay at OT

Big Jacks team

Jim Platt
Peter Creamer - 1st league Cup start game for the Boro
Frank Spraggon
Graeme Souness

Willie Maddren
Harry Charlton - Harry's penultimate Boro game

Boro flashback - August 4th 1984

Morton 2 Boro 1

Dave Currie getting our consolation goal

This was the time, leading up to our lowest ebb, we had a mini Scottish tour, Boro manager, the late, great Willie Maddren, drove the clubs team mini bus to Scotland then to each game & made the players get out when they got close to the ground & walk the short distance to the groubd, he was embarrassed that we were travelling up in a mini bus & didn't want other teams thinking less of us.

What a great man he was, always thinking of the Boro
