Next seasons manager....

I think you misread my post or maybe I didnt explain what I meant very well.

My point is that the best we could probably do would be to appoint someone like Eddie Howe. He'd play brilliant football but we'd still get battered on a regular basis in the top flight and battle every season to stay up.

The days of European football are pretty unlikely in my opinion. Look at the players we bought in that era, the best 3 players that Villa had for a start. Southgate, Ugo and Boateng would cost more than 100m nowadays and we bought them before we added the flair players.

Fair enough if you want a fresh start, let's try and find a manager who will play good football. But in terms of league positions the best we can hope for is what Bournemouth did or Brighton are doing in my opinion, unless we get more investment. The days of spending our way to Europe are long gone.

I agree with you mate, we could never spend our way to Europe. We couldn't even spend our way out of the Championship. That's why we need a long-term plan that works around our lack of finances.

And you're right - we are going to get battered a LOT on our way to being a successful team. Which is why the plan is long-term, even if we get relegated, or smacked about in the Prem, at least we know we're working TOWARDS something.

At the moment, we're getting twonked at home by Rotherham 3-0. Is that any better?

The average life of a Championship manager is measured in months rather than years. I get the desire for a long term plan but we had one supposedly with Woodgate and that didn't last for long and wors

Can't believe you're even moaning about the club in a hypothetical situation where we did get promoted. We're in the Championship, the Europa League is irrelevant to us. The club should plan

I'd love what you are proposing to actually happen but I'm just resigned to the current situation.

The Warnock extension is uninspiring, cautious and I can see why some people aren't happy with it. But in the current climate and with whats happened in the last 12 months I can understand Gibsons caution.

I might be wrong but I get the impression that Gibson might be doubting himself as well. When he's used his initiative we've ended up with bad appointments in people like Southgate, Agnew, Monk and Woodgate. I think he feels safer with an appointment like Warnock.

I've been banging the drum for going down the foreign route since Karanka left but that seems another route we are unwilling to go down.

I just think this is what we are as a club, the only alternative would be for a new owner and thats not happening either.

Warnock is addressing our issues with the lack of pace, that we've all complained about, doesn't believe in paying loads of  money for no end product etc. so as an appointment for this time and place I'm happy enough with it.

If at the end of next season, we are no further forwards in regards to consistency then I doubt anyone could argue for him to remain.

I have no problem whatsoever with what Norwich are doing, I admire them for it.

I'm arguing that Warnock not being a pathway to European football does not mean that there's no point in getting promoted under him, or that the club couldn't stay up with this style of play. Burnley do it year after year.

I expect Farke to leave Norwich in a year or two having either been relegated with them or scraped by, I don't expect Norwich to get European football at any point in the next decade. It doesn't mean Farke was a bad appointment or that Norwich's plan is poor.

But where are we going if we get up? Where are we going if we stay up? What's the point of existing as a football club if not to plan for competing for the next level of honour? Resting on your laurels is a sure-fire way to end up being a nothing club and eventually slip away.

I want our club to have a legitimate long-term vision, I want us to put a plan in place with a goal we can be proud of. And I think a reasonable very long-term goal for any club in a position like ours is to plan to achieve the very thing we already have done; win a cup and play in Europe. It might never happen, it might be a pipe dream but there's one way you know for a fact we'll never achieve those goals and it's by never planning for them in the first place, whether your plan is to try and achieve them in 5, 10 or 20 years time. I'm sure there are plenty of people who followed the club long before I did and never expected to achieve what we did in the 00s too, sure they were seen as fanciful ideas but we did achieve them nonetheless.

Right now, our vision is barely season to season, we're not in any way pro-active. We barely plan for the future at all, we know this off the back of the Garry Monk summer that has hindered our ability to do pretty much anything for nearly 4 years. Is it really so much to ask that we even think about what we want to achieve in as much as 5 years time when we consider signing players? We can't even do that, let alone anything as 'drastic' as trying to get back into Europe by the 2040s. We signed a player for a record fee on a 4-year deal on big money, we signed another player for a relatively large fee on massive wages for 4 years and within less than 6 months we gave those players to a manager who had *** all idea what to do with them.

I think since Woodgate was sacked the plan was to stabilise and then progress in this division. I'm not sure our ambition extended much further than that.

I feel like keeping Warnock for another season is a bit of shame in terms of being a potential opportunity missed. If we are being realistic it's pretty unlikely we'll get into the top 6 this season and this summer would have been as good a time as any to lay the foundations on a long-term plan. The high earners from Monk's/Gibson's spending splurge will be gone, we have a decent core of younger pros on long contracts giving us an opportunity to mould the squad with a few additions into a really good footballing side, importantly with the next few seasons in mind. That said I feel like the foundations of that long-term plan would have to go further than just the head coach, we'd need specialists in certain roles and we'd need a Director of Football to oversee that construction of the wider backroom staff and then the on-field matters.

But I've come to accept that, that is a bit of a pipe dream and so we will continue to lurch from short-term appointment to short-term appointment, until on the off chance we strike it lucky (like we did with Karanka). My only hope is that we allow Warnock to sign the players he needs but on short-term deals or at least with one eye on how they'd at least fit different footballing style. I can imagine if he doesn't get us up next season he won't be hanging around, and I don't want to see us lumbered with another bloated expensive squad after he's gone. Then if we do get promoted I'm sure next season we will be having these very same conversations, would Warnock go out on a high or would he stick around for 1 season in the Prem.

I'd bet that Warnock will be our manager next season...unless he has a sudden change of heart / health.

To be honest I'm not sure this is the right time to be getting a new manager in and changing things around. Until there is more clarity / certainty over the future of football in general and the club gets back on a sounder financial footing, I think we'll be treading water.

As I've said before, I'd be very surprised if NW stays more than another season or two, purely on age / health grounds, but I think it will take at least that long for Boro to start thinking more long-term...unless, as some have suggested, Jepson takes over the reins.

After all, prospective managers (the good ones anyway) only tend to take on jobs if they feel there is an interesting project, worth investing their time and effort in.

Until Boro can show they are that kind of club again, I think we'll be pretty limited in the kind of managers we can attract.

Warnock must of received assurances on signings in the summer as he won't of been staying otherwise. If we aren't promoted this year we will be trying to replicate what he did at QPR next season

Wild guess here. He's been assured that he will get handsomely paid while working under an owner who is setting no real demands. It's a pretty easy job for him, this.

But in case you are right I hope he doesn't change his mind about those he bring in 6 months down the line.

He dont play potter football though. Will not be a change to what we have. He is a typical brittish manager....

That first half season (2018) after Potter left, they played some really good stuff? That could have been a bit more down to a "hang-over" from Potter's reign though. The 2019 was a write off for them though, although statistically they still averaged more accurate passes per game than we have this season, by about 100 passes.

I don't disagree with that but that's a plan that's been made in the short-term and only serves us in the short-term. It might not be too long before we change tact again. Next season we might come out onto the Riverside turf preparing to play Baseball, who knows.

All relative Potter took a step up from Allsvenskan (League One) to Championship to the Premiership and has pretty much replicated the same style. No doubt there are differences between the 2 coaches in terms of style, but I wouldn't write someone off based on the league they are playing/managing in.

I've honestly never heard of Hurling before today and just watched some of it, how many different sports have they tried to combine to make that monstrosity? 😂

I mean, it looks class but I honestly have no idea how they're even playing it to the level they are, amazing technical skills by those players!

I'm sure Wilson meant to say Rounders, but had a slip of the keyboard. 😉

Isn't Hurling (like most Gaelic sports) just one of those things you put on to impress tourists, so they can say, "Look at those Irish and their funny ancient ways"😁😝

Like getting them to kiss the blarney stone and try their hand at riverdancing?
